What an awesome game, the first time he has ever had 30+ touches for a game. Some of his kicks into the 50 were crap, but overall good to see him kicking it up a notch. About bloody time too.

Was just going to start a thread on this. Great game and good signs that he managed 30+ for the first time.

Hopefully he can build on this because we need him to live up to his potential.

I think that because Bartel, GAblett, Chappy and Corey have been playing well lately they seem to get all the tagging attention. This means players like Kelly can escape scrutiny. Good to see him stepping it up :thumbsu:

I've said in threads earlier in the year he looks a lot more composed than last year. Unfortunate that he missed a couple of games due to an errant elbow, which is about the only one the tribunal has picked up on thus far.

Kelly is a very good player, and he fits in so well in our team, he has all the skills to be a great link man. It is when he doesn't use that skill or doubts it, he looks ordinary.

I hope he continues this season, if he continues in this manner, he will gain back many of his doubters from last season and we can see him take off like he did a few years ago.

I am the first to admit I wanted to trade Kelly last year. Its easy to see that was a mistake on my behalf.
Any guy who can play like that now over a couple of weeks against the best in the business is worth hanging onto and well done to Bomber for saying he was untouchable.

In the main its just good for Kelly himself and his esteem. Been through a bit and probably for a few seasons now he has felt left behind by Gaz and Jimmy. I think he has taken some great strides back...good luck to him.

Was always going to take him ages to get back the form he showed glimpses of before he broke his leg. Well done Kelly. Came to the fore when he was needed.

I'd like to know how many of his kicks resulted in Geelong marks, and how many of his handballs hit geelong players on the full and that didn't get tackled immediately, for the first three quarters of yesterdays game.

So you think his touches weren't quality?

If you get 30 odd touches you're obviously having a good game, so I don't argue that, but even he would probably admit that he could have used the ball a lot better for a fair few of those possessions. Although however, I concede that they were tricky conditions yesterday with the wind and the damp ground, but really I'm just curious to know those stats.

I hear ya.
You wouldn't exactly call him a bad kick but sometimes his skills let him down and his decision making can be rather excrutiating...
I think a lot of people forgot that he broke his leg pretty seriously and that it might take some time for him to ge back to good form. With Jimmy and Gaz getting tagged it leaves room for someone like Kelly or Tenace or Selwood to take their chances and contribute to the team...

His best game for 2 years, has regained his passion, hunger for the ball and contest.Whilst his disposal was fair at best the conditions were tricky and he wasn't on his own there.
What I really liked, was the way he was able to extract the ball from the packs and give off, then keep running to receive further up the ground. His decision making was also much better than it has been.
He's slowly starting to get more depth into his kicks (he used to be a beautiful long kick) and will once again become a very important member of the midfield.Tough in and under but also a link running player with skill.:thumbsu:

A true believer in Kelly and Ling YES ... a true beliver in Blake and West NO

How can you be a non-believer in West? Think he needs to play a game first before you or anyone judges him...
As if you weren't one of those "Trade Ling" supporters last year, own up to it!

I've had reservations about Kelly - too often the show pony - but he earned bonus points from me yesterday. Hope he keeps up the standard he set - cannot recall him being so effective - (stats mean BA) - really hard at the ball for a change. Good on him!:thumbsu:

Just about his best game over the past two or so years.

I think all the criticism he's received over the while is still well justified, but his current form over the last two or so weeks (highlighted by Saturday's effort) has been nothing short of very good.

Kicking is still too much of a mixed bag (in general terms, he doesn't weight the kick effectively and either allows for too many over the head passes, or some which drop a good few metres in front of leading players' ankles), but as far as yesterday's performance goes, it's hard to read into that aspect given the conditions.

Anyway, he's working as hard as I've ever seen him work, covering good ground, getting proper positioning, and attacking contests as aggresively as ever, which is all really pleasing to see.

I'v seen West at VFL level and he doesn't impress me there... please don't put him through the humiliation of playing against a real ruckman like Cox, White or Sandilands...

As for trading Lingy - he is (and always has been) my fav player, and never shall I want to see the day where he cannot retain his spot in this team! It shouldn't (and won't) happen!

I suppose you're also a believer in Kingy then...

Give Blake half Kingy's bad luck and it would end his career, at least King has shown (all be it - very occasionally over the last 4 years) that he can mix it with, and beat, the best ruckman in the competition - something Blake can only dream of doing...

If the Grand Final was tomorrow and it was a choice out of King and Blake - I'd sure as hell be going King so long as he's over 70% fit.

Nope. The match committee wouldn't even think about it.

Come back in a few years, after Blake has played more than 19 games and then we'll pass judgment.

Based on what? What he did 5 years ago?
