Geelong rookie James Toohey has decided to retire from AFL and turn his attention to full time study and completing his university degree.

The 21-year-old played 13 VFL games in 2014, his first season with the club. In addition to his obvious footballing ability, James also excelled in the classroom, and was dux at St Kevin’s College in year 12.

“Due to family, medical and personal reasons, I have decided to step away from AFL football and return to university on a full time basis,” Toohey said.

“It's an extremely difficult decision, but one that is the best thing for my health and my family.

“I would like to thank the club for the opportunity, and for all the support they have given me and my family. I am unbelievably grateful for the experience and just wish the best for all my teammates and the club.”

The club wished James and his family well in the future.

“James has been a popular member of our playing list and we will miss him,” Geelong’s general manager of football Steve Hocking said.

“We are happy for James that he has made this decision and have no doubt he will do well in his studies. He is always welcome at the club and we wish James and his family the best in the future.”

Really disappointing news. The dream just wasn't meant to be.

All the best to him for what comes next in life. Sounds like he will have plenty of options as he obviously has a wise head on his shoulders.

That intellect, coupled with the dedication and application required to have come this far in footy, should stand him in good stead for whatever he takes on from here.

Go well, James.:thumbsu:

Shame yes, but now with two vacant spots we should remain excited that if not sooner (I'm not around all the rules of the AFL) but by year's end that's now two more spots of new people we can inject into our club. This is not a bad thing, just a different thing.

Good luck to him with what sounds like a bright future away from footy.

Interesting timing of the announcement. I noticed just in the last few days questions being asked of the club's Twitter about where he's at. Almost as though that precipitated an announcement. Could be coincidence though.

Shame James didn't get a real go at it, I think he had the talent. Having said that I think given his health issues this is a wise choice. All the best for your future James.

Best of wishes to James in his future endeavours.

Glad he has taken the steps in the appropriate fashion to step away from the game.

Hope he gets all he needs and wants from his Uni work and career.

Seems he'll be good at what ever he steps into.

Thats 2 list spots open ( 1 senior 1 rookie) and its May.

Wouldn't be out of place here.

I wish him well.

hahaha!!! That's exactly how I feel every time I hear news like this- and of Hartman, of Cowan, Bartel, Kelly.... etc. etc. Sometimes I just feel like I'm getting desensitised to bad news because my reaction used to be a hell of a lot more colourful than just 'bugger'!

Not going to have a crack at the kid but good luck to him.
But this is yet another poor result from our rookie list. So we've lost Toohey. Zac Bates has barely been sighted. Delaney doesn't even look close to playing. Bourke from the year before only lasted a season. 2012 we didn't even use a pick. Then we've got guys like Eardly and Sheringham simpkin burbury bathie. I would suggest that in the past 5 years our only decent rookie is Walker that we still have. Blicavs technically wasn't a rookie. I think out use of the rookie draft has been poor and it must improve.

You can't include bathie as a rookie and then in the same sentence say blicavs isn't a rookie. They are both type B rookies (from another sport). But yes I do agree our rookie selections haven't worked out too great lately.

You wouldn't want to it's not his fault, poor bastard.
