Thought this was worth it's own thread

INJURED Collingwood star Jamie Elliott will begin running next Monday, but concedes the timing of his return to the field is still unknown.

Elliott has been battling an ongoing back condition known as pars defect, and the club chose to take him out of training in late February to allow it time to heal...

"It's a gradual build up, so it's hard to put an amount of weeks on it … I don't know when I'll be back."

I believe it's going to be very hard to have a well functioning forward line without Elliot, arguably our best forward with Cloke's form slump. This condition seems to be on-going and has been affecting him for a while, really horrible blows that him and Reid have to battle these things and can't get on the park... we need both of them at their best if we're going to do any September damage over the next few years.

Fingers crossed he can get on top of it relatively soon and have a big season, one of the best players in the comp to watch when he's on... back issues are extremely restricting though

No surprises here, it will be a matter of a gradual build-up and seeing how his back responds. Impossible to put a definitive timeframe on that.

Whilst it is absolutely clear that we do not know when Elliott will be able to return, that AFL article did say:

"Captain Scott Pendlebury and coach Nathan Buckley both endured the back complaint during their careers and Elliott has already sought their advice."

Let's just give Jamie whatever time he needs to sort his back out.

The way Fas played in NAB Challenge games suggests that whilst Jamie will be missed, he isn't going to be missed too much; Fas is covering him already.

I thought this extract very interesting "Captain Scott Pendlebury and coach Nathan Buckley both endured the back complaint during their careers"

Whilst there's no indication if Pendles pars defect was in his time at Pies, given Pendles has played 21 or more games every year for the last 9 years it would seem not OR that it just illustrates how good he is that he played through it and played relatively well.

We don't really have anyone in the team who does what Elliott can do. But whatever is going on with his back, and whenever he'll be back, Fasolo's form so far makes Elliott's absence less critical. We're also living in a world when midfielders will need to rest forward more (e.g. Swan), which also plays a part in keeping the small-mid-big forward equilibrium. I personally believe that Fas will deliver this year.

More info in the link. The encouraging part was:

"Most patients with either spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis have excellent clinical outcomes with conservative measures, and surgical intervention rarely is rarely necessary."

We should be real careful with Billy here.

He could well be the vital key for us in the second half of the season, yet apart from 2-3 games in the first 11, we should win (or lose) games without him anyway.

We've fallen away the past few years because we've lost players to injuries and other problems (Beams, Thomas, Lumumba etc losing interest).

Getting Elliott back mid season could keep us in the top 6 rather than watching us tumble like always.

You have a medical background right TRS?

Do you see Elliot ever completely getting over an injury like this?
It's certainly within the range of possible outcomes, but it's not as clear-cut as it might be for a fractured fibula. Healing rates differ widely.

Interesting the club has said nothing of this and haven't said he'll play again. They must be covering something up.

<insert conspiracy theory> to rob us supporters of said knowledge. Sounds eerily like the Ben Reid issue that has so many noses out of joint.

Hope they can manage him properly. Continuing on from the Reid thread where this started, it can be a hard one to come back from if not managed right.

I didn't know that both Bucks and Pendles had the same injury though. Gives me hope.

We're well covered down forward this year with Fasolo in good form in the preseason, so no rush for Elliot to return to the side. Main thing is for Elliot to return to full health before he returns to the side. Ideal is to get him back before the finals to give it his best shot.

Well covered up forward?

Cloke looks to be continuing his rubbish form, Howe out injured and Elliot out injured.

Moore is a 2nd year kid who will have some ups, but also downs... to me the forward line is looking quite shaky without Elliot

Elliott's biggest haul of goals in a year is 35, which he kicked last year. If we were ever relying on him to be the lynchpin then our forward line was already very shaky.

With or without Elliott, we need a diversity of options: an improved Cloke (at least better than last year, one of his worst in which he still had a better average than Elliott), a potent Fas, an improved Moore (even with ups and downs), a decent contribution from Howe (who isn't as far away as Elliott), and a contribution from a more potent midfield. Gault is the other factor in the mix. This is what will make our forward line functional, though this should in no way be seen as diminishing the benefit of Elliott to the team.

Que Sera Sera,
Whatever will be, will be,
The future's not ours to see,
Que Sera Sera,
We've still got Scott Pendlebury

Or something like that.
