I'm interested if people think we should have a crack at getting him next year. Now that he has cost Richmond their major sponsor you would think he will not be there next year.

Being from SA he was a guy i took notice of when watching their games. The potential is there, he can play....what is he worth now?

Schultz has really only played one good game, but due to our lower position this yr on the table, we should probably have a crack at one of those SA kids like butler, waters etc.

Richmond loses big AFL deal over DUI

AFL club Richmond has lost its lucrative Transport Accident Commission sponsorship in the wake of the Jay Schulz drink-driving incident.

The TAC, which promotes road safety in Victoria, has terminated its six-figure sponsorship of the club, effective immediately.

Schulz, 19, was pulled over by police early Thursday morning travelling 80km/h in a 40km/h zone, with a blood alcohol reading of .065.

Schulz lost his licence for six months and was fined by police.

TAC chief executive Stephen Grant said his organisation had no choice but to end its 16-year association with Richmond - citing a warning that had been given to the club after a similar incident in 2001.

Former Tigers player Royce Vardy had been caught drink-driving that year.


"We owe it to every Victorian who has been injured or lost a loved one to road trauma to honour that pledge," Grant said.

The cancellation of the final year of the sponsorship deal is expected to cost the cash-strapped Tigers $500,000.

Earlier, Richmond coach Terry Wallace said Schulz would not be sacked as a result of the incident.

The club on Thursday fined Schulz - who is currently sidelined with a broken ankle - $5,000.

Richmond president Clinton Casey said the club was extremely disappointed that the TAC had ended the deal.

"As we have already made very clear, we in no way condone yesterday's incident, but it must be remembered that the Richmond Football Club has also undertaken a considerable amount of positive work in the community as ambassadors for the TAC," said Casey.

"Over the period, we have spoken to tens of thousands of people on issues of road safety and drink-driving through education, training programs, country, hospital and school visits."

He looks to have some potential, but we wouldnt want to be giving much up for him.

Say a second round pick, maybe, or a mid list player, no more than that IMO.

I've only ever seen him play 1 good match (when he booted six at the Gabba). Otherwise, he's looked pretty ordinary.

the tigers rate him highly. i would imagine they would want more than a 2nd round pick although i wouldnt go near him. he is damn overated if you ask me.

Agree, unless he gets delisted and only then would l pick him up with a pre season pick of a very low national draft pick. Would not trade anything for him unless it was like a Smith or one of them undesirables but why do we want to give one away for another.

The Tigers will lose major sponsor TAC after Jay Schulz was caught drink-driving and speeding on P-plates.

Can the Terry Wallace-induced shining summer at Tigerland that promised so much truly have been an illusion? AFL coaching's other star signing of 2005, Rodney Eade, declared after a first-up win on Monday that his players would not drink alcohol until springtime.

Wallace, on the other hand, has seen his short-term hopes fade more quickly than his tan.

He mused after Richmond's Easter Sunday flogging that he and his match committee might as well have spent summer in the pub.

Could Jay Schulz have been so stupid that he thought his new coach was serious? Certainly he was stupid. The 19-year-old forward came to Richmond at the end of 2002 as part of the famous Kane Johnson deal in which the club relinquished what finished up to be the No. 2 draft pick - Daniel Wells.

Schulz's work ethic quickly came under the spotlight. He gained a reputation for talking the talk without walking the walk. And yet last season, he turned all that around, his transformed attitude culminating with a six-goal performance against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in July.

Staffers at the club yesterday were shocked to learn that it was Schulz who has cost the club such a frightening amount of money - about half-a-million dollars was potentially due to the club in remaining instalments from the the 2005 Transport Accident Commission sponsorship if you count incentives. They would, they said, have put half the team instead of him as likely transgressors.

Schulz, said Richmond chiefs Steve Wright and Greg Miller - and neither man had barely been sighted during 2005 before yesterday's bombshell - was shattered, devastated and embarrassed. As of course these players always are.

Club president Clinton Casey was heading overseas today for several weeks but agreed with other Richmond chiefs that there would be little point - even if it were possible under the AFL code of conduct - to further punish Schulz in the short term.

Sacking the footballer is not an option. Apart from the $5000 fine, all that appears open in terms of discipline is - please excuse the cynicism here - counselling and community work.

Wallace, who does not normally appear at the club on Thursdays but who has been the face of Richmond since November, saw no reason to put forward his version of events.

And why would he? No amount of spin could yesterday hide the fact that this is a disaster for a club that seriously looked at turning to the AFL for seven-figure assistance last year.

Not only did the club lose more than $2 million last year but along with all those on-field disasters was political mayhem as well.

The on-field scenario looked unchanged five days ago and now the club must deal with another off-field disaster.

Schulz chose to speed, drink and drive not only on a probationary licence but just days after a heart-wrenching Easter break on Victoria's roads in which eight people died, more here than in any other state.

The reason the TAC sponsors football clubs - and last year it was seriously questioning the wisdom of those deals - is to send a message to young men not to drive fast or drink too much.

More frustratingly, the relationship between Richmond and the TAC had improved to such a degree over the summer - a high point was the Mildura pre-season community camp - that the government body had begun to make noises regarding a new deal beyond 2005.

Continuity has not exactly been a feature of the Tigers' landscape since 1989. Wallace is Richmond's seventh coach since then and yet its major sponsor had not changed. No wonder Miller and Wright chose to keep Schulz at the club and then throw him out in front of the cameras after their solemn press conference.

Has anything really changed at Richmond? Suddenly it's April and, more astonishingly, summer and all the hope that accompanied it seems an eternity away.

He played an awesome game at the GABBA for them against a class player so he definitely does has potential. Is Watts still in favour, what's the news on him? I can see him going back to Victoria soon so we could trade him for Schulz maybe.

We will be using those to get some young talent onto our list.

I have a problem with trying to develop other teams discarded players, especially KPP's. Wayne Carey, Evan Hewitt and Ryan Fitzgerald were all talls that we gave up quality draft picks for but we didn't get fair value in return. Unless we trade some middle tier player for Schulz, I don't think we should bother.

All I said that Adelaide will not trade their 1st and 2nd round draft picks for the next couple of years. This point has been made by NC, Triggy, Reidy and even Stewart a number of times already.

Its a strategy that club has in getting us back to being a premiership contender. Nothing to do with age. If we didn't get that pick 12 in Stenglein trade we wouldn't have traded our pick for Thompson

Funny you mentioned that but James Fantasia said that they wouldn't trade their 1st round picks unless there are exceptional circumstances. He did mention Reiwoldt as an example.

Fact is it would have to be an exceptionally good deal for us to trade our 1st and second round picks and in all honesty I think the chances of that happening are very slim

He blew .065 - or in other words F-all. for years in SA this was below he legal limit, in the US the limit is .1; the 0.05 limit is a statistical irrelevancy.
this limit is about politics, not saving lives. doesn't make it ok, but he had very little to drink, and was very unlikely to impaired in a meaningful way.

it's a minor incident, and the TAC used it to get out of deal they didn't want, and he is copping the blame for it.

make no mistake he's a dumbassed ****, but that's not the same as what he is being blamed for.

It does make it worse that he is a P plater and shouldn't have any alcohol in his blood.

Having said that, I agree with you. He used as a scape goat and TAC jumped at the opportunity to get out of the deal.

I thin they would think long and hard if Fevola or Pavlich were in question and in the end they would probably give those picks up. But I very much doubt they would be traded for a player who will not offer the club at least 6-7 years of quality footy.
