I reckon he's been maligned enough to get a bit of individual credit. Kicked 7 goals a month back, has continued to improve over the past month and seems to like being part of Matty's forward structure.

Today, 13K 8M 5H 4.2 - 6 of those marks were contested and 5 were inside 50 - probably a best-on-ground performance. Some of his diving on loose balls is Loganesque. A huge game for a guy who is trying to win over supporters and outsiders. 25.11 for the season - has gone alright in front of goals, where there were queries.

There was a very good article in the tiser about him a few weeks back, he battles his own self-confidence demons. Hopefully today will give him - and others - some belief.

He is the one second chance player that we picked up late last year that I was happy to get. He is filling a hole in our list and doing a good job of it for now.

As long as he keeps busting his guts and kicking well he can play quite a few games for us.

I absolutely hate oft use terms like hack, spud etc - more disappointed when made by seemingly reasonable posters, with a few well known and obvious exceptions.

I will give any player coming to our club a fair time to adjust and produce before making a reasoned assessment - and yes, that includes Nash, Harding and Meyer.

All clubs have examples of turning player's careers around.

A hack that will only do well in the SANFL...

Schulzy, what a star! Doesn't just kick goals but provides and target and always at least brings the ball to ground.

Was never going to dominate every single game this year, but i was confident he could play his part this year.

I really hope his last 4 or 5 games is the a sign that he's gaining some more consistency.

His contested marks were fantastic today. We haven't had that kind of effort up forward for a long time. Went through a rough patch around the middle of the year. Pretty realiable in front of goal as well. Good to see.

Yeah you are right about those terms for players, everyone deserves a go. Logan my whipping boy is one I try to be abjective about and ignore his few brain fart moments.

I don't approve of the loosely used word "rape" or the tongue in cheek depression comments thrown around to just for good measure whilst we are bitching about that stuff.

Jay's hands and efforts were great, hopefully he becomes our Neo and starts to believe.

What a great improvement from Schulzy. I remember earlier in the year where he would always attempt to take the mark but loses hold of it and go to ground. Now he is able to complete then, keep his ground and kick straight.

Well done :thumbsu:

Should get to 30 goals and youd have to say thats very much a pass mark for wat the pre season predictions were. Was rightly criticised earlier in the year, and should be rightly praised now. Has been super for the past 4-5 weeks.

What I love is his full frontal attack on the ball. Isnt afraid to hit the contest hard and certainly isnt afraid to jump on the ball and get smashed to win a free kick, or win the contested footy. Much respect for that!

Big "Sergeant" Schulz is fast becoming one of my favourite players. His effort is unquestionable, he is tall, mobile, agile and strong. He genuinely seems to have played himself into form through consistent effort. He now seems to have that self belief to win contests and contribute to the team.

Agreed. Schulz has been a pleasure to watch over the past month or so. His performance today was excellent. If he can keep this up and players like Hitchcock, Boak and Gray continue to improve, the future looks awesome.

Been great. Seems to have found his place in the side. Our best forward this year without a doubt. Should end the year with 40 goals or close.

Dives on the ball too often and when he doesnt mark the ball he lets it slip through behind the contest, like a few of our forwards. These are the only criticisms of his game. A good forward like tredders brings it down in front of them at the worst.
But very good effort. I like the stewart, schultz combo, it worked allright in the nab cup. Schultz could prove to be an excellent stop gap to fill tredders gap until butcher/ trengove/ westhoff develop.

His last five weeks have been super, even games against Freo, Bulldogs and Crows have seen him provide a very good focus and effort at CHF. As Macca said 30 goals for the year, probably from 17-18 games, is very decent. May end up being more like 35 which is even beter. I wasn't happy he was getting games ahead of Salter, but am thrilled with the way he is commanding both CHF and the area within 30m from goal. Marking, ground level efforts, chasing and GOAL KICKING have all been great.

Most crucially though is the way that he and D. Stewart (and now Westhoff) are complementing each other. Also working better with Ebo who is staying down a bit more.

If he keeps this up, it will be an enormous bonus to our club over the next 2-3 seasons.

Why thanks to FF for starting this thread to my buddy Jay Schulz!

I just wish I could find one of my original posts when I selected Jay in which I stated that I always had confidence he could do well given a chance. So good to see him doing well.

He always had talent, he just needed to see it through.

Keep going Sarge - I & many Port supporters salute you!

Westhoff is one year younger than Schulz. Surely he's had more than enough time to develop? I personally reckon Jay is a shit load better than Hoff, although Hoff can be very good when he goes hard (like he has been in the last 2 games).

Development is not as much about age as it is about time on a list and exposure to AFL level football. Justin may only be a year younger than Schulz, but this is his 4th year on an AFL list, last year being disrupted by injury. Schulz has had 4 more years at AFL level than Justin.

Always hoped he would take the next step whilst at the Tigers and thought Hardwick may have being able to help with that. Much better lead up forward and except for last year was a great shot on goal.

As I have sad before; Farmer has had a gone last couple of months with the Tigers as has Schulz Port. Could work out to be a win for both clubs.

I heard Schulz inteviewed on ABC 891 after the game and he said that at the end of last year Hardwick told him he needed to play in a different environment and that there'd been interest from a number of other clubs.

I wonder if we would have traded Farmer away if Choco had not been reappointed last year but I guess we traded for need as did Richmond. You'd give Schulz a pass this year despite a rocky patch which saw him dropped.

He's probably got the rest of this year and most of next to firmly establish himself. If Butcher becomes the player we think he can be there's going to be less room for Jay, Westhoff and Stewart.

Yesterday we saw the career end of a legendary forward, maybe we saw the start of anothers today???

Hopefully :D:D:D:D
