Carrying on like a pork chop - disgraceful.

Shouldn't have carried on like that - just a case of venting out his frustrations at what seems like his own side's poor fielding on poor umpire Oxenford.

I thought Oxenford carried himself with class - he shouldn't have to put up with that kind of behaviour.

Only saving grace is that he did apologize and he acknowledged that he did take it too far.

he's usually a class act, and i'm not against guys venting on the field, but he definitely took it too far. i could justify something like that if it were the wrong decision overturning the correct decision, but the fact is it was a correct decision being made, and as was pointed out it was a no ball for hitting the return crease anyway.

as the op said i think it was a lot more to do with sri lanka's fielding than anything. it was horrible.

Jaya was right to be a little pissy, umpire should have called it straight away, but he's right the umpires shouldn't take their cues from the players....

I thought the third umpire told him it was a no-ball when they were checking whether it was a six, or a four?

And yea, he shouldn't have carried on like that, it was embarrassing to see at the game, he should wear a fine, but he's also apologised, in public (and you'd hope, privately) and is clearly ashamed of his behaviour, so that's the end of it, IMO.

And batsmen too often remonstrate about wides or waist-high deliveries. If that is never nipped in the bud, then occasionally, the fielding captain could believe that the batsman is trying to, or is influencing the umpire. Last night the call seemed to be delayed, and Jaya was within his rights to question the delay, but not to carry on.

Don't see how this is relevant. A captain would be negligent for not pointing this out. Just as an AFL captain would be remiss to not point out 19 opposition players on the field.

It's relevant because it's the umpire who should be making the call. Post a delivery he has requested a decision, or non-decision, by an umpire to be reviewed. This is the same as Clarke but arguably worse on the assumption it seems likely he noted the extra fielder, played the ball, then went to complain.

That said it was an awkward situation last night and I can't blame Jayawardene for getting slightly agitated.

There was one batsman in a state game recently noticed an extra fielder but said nothing and played a big shot knowing it would be a no ball

That was Sangakkara that pointed it out I believe - Jayawardene was already out by that stage I think. Point still stands I guess as it was his team.

What do others think about taking no ball checking out of the umpires hands? Too many things to keep an eye on for the umpire among all of the other things. Felt a bit for Oxenford yesterday, I think he felt bad enough for the delayed decision as it was without having to cop it from Jayawardene.

It was unnecessary. At the time his team were all over the shop. I think anger and frustration boiled over there.

Jaya is great for cricket, but that wasn't his finest moment. At least he isn't holding his middle finger up to the crowd or shaking his head and standing around like Sachin when he's dismissed.

Surprised he wasn't suspended, there is going on a bit and then there is what he did last night which was ridiculous.

Even more ridiculous when you consider it was a no ball for two different reasons and sri lanka themselves complained until they got an overturn just two days before.

Still when the ICC dump any ump with balls you are bound to get skippers thinking they can get away with anything because quite frankly they can.
