Speculation Jed Walter

Dropped him true, but he’s played a couple decent games already this season, and as other people have said is only a couple years removed as a top 3 pick. Don’t reckon a 2nd and 3rd in a Tassie year where that’s essentially a 3rd and 4th does it.

With norths improvement I could see 2027 1st for Walter and swap 2027 2nds, maybe something like that. They’ve got a decent academy kid this year so maybe ask for a 2nd this year for theirs next year I’m not sure. He’d definitely be worth a first
The fact you think a VFL forward who averages 1 goal a game over 35 games and a lower goals per game average than Matt Owies is a better pickup than Sam Berry, someone whose top 3 in his clubs B&F so far this season is mindboggling. One of my biggest head scratchers ive seen this year for sure

So what would you propose we pay?

Maximum late 1st.

Nothing more.

How we get that is another question.

Not sure if Suns are chasing points this season.

Our 2nd wouldn't be far off if Walter is struggling to fit into the current Suns structure and t isn't working for either party.

A FF1st being our 2028 1st would be a risk worth considering.

I'm sure the GC would want something around the pick range.

A lot to play out before the end of the year.
Especially if King goes.

To clarify, you think Sam Berry is worth more in a trade than Jed Walter?

Yes, not even close either

Jed Walters worth is closer to Jack Williams in reality. Stats line up with Jack giving more flexibility as 2nd ruck
ignoring how they have played this season, given you say Walter has performed closer to Jack Williams which says to me you just haven’t watched him at all;

how can you look at a 2023 Pick 3 KPF consistently showing flashes of being an elite tall, and say a 2020 Pick 28 that has largely been delist material until his 6th season, is worth more?

Considering positional value, and the ceiling of the two, I can’t fathom thinking that Berry is worth more, or that Walter is not worth a first rounder.

Remove 2023 pick 3 from that question and you gor your answer

His former draft pick number doesnt excuse the potato like impact he is having .

No one in their right mind, and SGIO isn't, is paying more for Berry than Walter.

2 things:

you can’t simply ignore it given the pedigree, the recency, and the position. Everyone knows that KPF usually take longer.

and how does your logic apply to Berry? He was a nothing player up till his 5th season, and now he’s performing well as a workhorse. How can write off a much higher calibre player in a longer-development position after 2 years while also saying “but this guy who took 6 years, he’s worth it”. Clubs aren’t paying a first for Walter’s production they’re paying it for the potential. Clubs are paying for Berry’s production, because he’s shown no ceiling for half a decade.

Berry wasnt worth a first rounder in his third year in because he didnt perform. Now he is performing he is worth that

Same logic for Walter. If you are in the VFL plodding away you are not worth a 1st rounder. I mean Max Gruzewski is greatly outperforming Walter in the VFL but dont hear any 2027 1st rounders going for him. If we judged on actual form and talent and not some imaginary future situation than his worth is a 3rd rounder, just like Maxs will be

If 3 years into your career you cant get past the VFL your worth isnt that high anymore im afraid. Welcome to 2026

you’re not paying for immediate production though? It’s the same reason you pick a KPF with pick 3 in the first place.

Any club in the competition would pay a back half of the first rounder for Walter

You are paying for what he has shown he can produce and so far thats VFL standard. Based on this logic Shanahan was a 2nd rounder and you are not paying for immediate production though so perhaps he is worth pick 20 now?

That is not how these things work with young KPFs, he's 3 years in and was a top 3 pick who has actually shown lots...

A club would be paying a first rounder for Shanahan because he could become one of the best talls. The exact same reason a club would pay a first for Walter.

People are really under valuing Jed Walter on this thread, This kid will be a Gun player in 2 years time
I see alot of Charlie Curnow , Josh Treacy level player.

easily worth a pick around #10 , If Brisbane had not got Oscar Allan last year that would have been the perfect club for Walter.

I agree. Would give a top 10 pick no problems.

i must be going nuts because i dont think walter has shown anything beyond his athletic traits, which are undeniable.

he has been exceptionally underwhelming in nearly all of his appearances at afl level to date.

compare to caddy, morris, and o'sullivan from same draft

croft and dear not on the level of the above but have also shown much more than walter.

he still has time on his side but any club willing to put up premium draft capital for him would be taking a significant risk that he comes good based on his draft position more than anything else.

I think thats fair, you'd be taking a risk and its definitely partly based on draft position but this close out from their draft, their draft position matters a bit no? Particularly when your projecting on a position that often takes a few years to get going.

His stats are comparable to Treacy's first 3 years and I never thought Treacy's had this level in him. Some club will have loved him in his draft year and think they can turn him into what they thought he would be back then. Im sure it'd be a pick around 10 required.

Above 10. In the teens IMO. Splitting hairs a tad when compo picks and bids will push pick 10 into the teens most likely.

Dawson was a much more advanced player and now a dead set gun and captsin. He cost pick 17 and the Swans werent happy.

They got Ah chee at no cost.

And as others have mentioned Jamara looks like he has taken his spot and is a better player. What did he cost the Suns? (More complicated scenario I know but Suns are making out like bandits ATM)

Will all come down to what sort of year he has and what opportunities the Suns give him.
