Watching the Blues last night got me thinking about Jeff Garlett. He's out of form at the moment, but the Blues will probably go really hard to find a KPF, so it might open the door for grabbing someone like Garlett. Would love him at the Dees as we really don't have a small forward.

Blues fans - what's his contract status? Is he untouchable or perhaps tradeable? And what's he worth?

Having a very poor season is Jeff. However, he's still on track for 30+(ish) goals on the season in a very down year. In our forum I had Carlton dangling him as trade bait a couple of months ago but was shot down very quickly. The only reason why I nominated him was in a "you have to give something to get something" trade scenario.

I'd suggest that his value to the club would be worth more than other clubs would be willing to pay.

Cheers mate. I know what you mean in that you have to give something to get something, and if you guys go hell for leather for a big forward, maybe he might be offered up. I hope we pounce if so. I'd be willing to pay a fair bit for him (again, gotta give something to get something)

He had a kid this year and at his very young age I have no doubt it has thrown a spanner in the works as far as his football goes. His talent and potential far outweighs his value on the open market. Unless he demanded a trade I wouldn't be letting him go.

He's every chance to kick 50 goals next year and be AA. He is very capable of being that good.

Having a very strange season.

Thought he actually looked alright in the half he played against Hawthorn and despite his poor season is one of the few on our list who has the potential to be an A-Grader.

Certainly unlikely to be traded.

dont disagree at all with this... he looks like his mind is on another planet 75% of the time...

would a swap for a Freo player like Suban be on the cards? Both seem like they could do with a change of scenery & there could be a swap of picks to make it more equitable

I'm not against the idea of trading Jeff for the right reasons and the right price...though judging from a distance Suban isn't the player we are after.

fair point.
I suppose what you might go for would be a tall defender, but you do have some promise with Watson & Bootsma. I don't think we could offer any big forwards which might be your preference, but as backline talls, there are Silvagni (get that name back at the Blues), or even (I am reticent to mention him) Anthony.
Will you see Freo if we can't make the finals, later in the season begin to play fringe players in order to increase their worth.

Maybe a swap for Silvangi and a swap of draft picks, in favour of Carlton?

haha. We had a similar idea. I am unsure of the swap of picks, except maybe for lower (3rd or 4th round) moreso for Carlton to have the psychological upper hand, as both players have been good rookie upgrades who could do even better at another club.

Bit like the Suban scenario...you might look at such an option if our hand was forced, but can't see why we would actively pursue either. Neither Suban or Silvagni are missing pieces of the puzzle.

I do think if it was to happen, as both clubs could possibly end up this year with very close draft picks. Carlton would try and swap their 3rd round pick with Freo's 2nd round pick. Maybe 4th to 3rd, but I think most Carlton supporters would want the 2nd round pick as Garlett is a proven goal kicker and last year nearly kicked 50 goals and this year (out of form) he is still on track for 30 goals. I think that was previous stated also in this thread...

so what pieces do you seek? for interest's sake. I wouldn't think we would sell the farm for Jeff.

Carlton need more midfield depth, a quality forward target and I beleive a lock-down small defender. Hypotheticall speaking (in so much as I don't sign off on Carlton list managmenet decisions....yet) if we were trading the contracted Garlett it would be for a pick to roll into a package for a high quality mid or KPF. The value of a small forward can be pretty variable but the way things are shaping this year Freo's first pick would be too high, and second pick too low.

Duffield might work.
I'd prefer to lose Pearce.
If you want a player who can play lock down small defender & mid, Suban could be the guy. (sorry to keep throwing his name there, but he seems to fit the profile) I do think he is OK & I'd prefer to keep him over Duffield & Pearce who I would give up for a packet of ciggies (& I hate smokes)
