Want to print a retraction to this Irish? Pagan just had the chance to promote him, but didn't. Gee I wonder why? Oh, that's right, he isn't up to it.

And btw I saw far more of Jesse at VFL level than you or Pagan for that matter. I don't guess, or read other people's posts and then make something up. I watch. And I don't just sit here and go "Jesse is great, and Jordan is unreal, and Adam Bentick is part of our future gun midfield group" on the back of HOPE like many others do.

I watch them. Bentick and Smith have the same problem - they have NO TANK and nothing else exceptional to replace it with. Comparing them to Diesel is ridiculous. Try Jason Johnson. He embarrassed Bentick for engine in the second last game and JJ isn't even notorious for that attribute. Didn't beat him by a bit. FLOGGED HIM. Ran down one end with Bentick, then dropped him like a bad habit on the way back. Then did it again and again and again.

And Smith....Smith? FOR GOD'S SAKE HE IS NOT UP TO IT!!!!!! He didn't get drafted last year, wasn't promoted this year, won't be drafted by anyone this year (even though he could be). He might get lucky like Bentick, sneak a few games in down the road somewhere, maybe even creep up to 20-30. Bentick might creep to 50. But there is no way known on earth will either play 100 games no way no way no way.

I can't believe how many posts I see from carlton fans including Bentick as a midfielder of the future. All that on the back of a good game against what was effectively the Collingwood reserves late in the year.

Once again, I have seen HEAPS of him in the twos, and he AIN'T UP TO IT EITHER.

Stop accepting mediocrity. That is not a trait that belongs with this club or its supporters. These guys will never help us win a premiership. No one more than I would like them to, but they just won't. At the moment we have Walks (I hope, fingers crossed still), Fev, Lance, Fish (fingers crossed), Teague, Stevens, Scotland, Waite, Thornton who have done enough to show they MAY play in a premiership one day.

That equals 9. 13 to go. Don't fill up the 13 with wishful thinking like Simpson, Bentick, Smith, Russell and on and on and on. SOME of these MIGHT make it to a very basic standard of AFL. MOST WON'T.

Carlton fans need a serious reality check......and better drafting.
Get out of the wrong side of bed this morning champ?

the reason smith was not promoted is that we have the following players
livo, davies, longmuir, chambers, bannister, wiggins, sporn, prendergast with a year to go on their contract.

it makes no sense to de list a contracted player as you have to pay them out and also pay the promoted player, so we are a little limited with how much we can turn over our list without wasting money

also we have picks 1, 4, 20, 36 and PSD 1 potentialy some very good players there

and we still have smith on our list for 2006

simplistic view

promote smith and lost pick 36
or
promote smith, keep pick 36 and de list player X and pay out $100,000 to player X who is not on the list

if smith wasn't upto it he would have been cut, so obviously CFC see he has something decent to offer.

j johnson has player 100+ games of afl, he has experience so it is obvious more often than not he is going to run to better positions than a 10 game player and drop him like a bad habit

as for writing Simpson, Bentick, Smith, Russell off, you are obviously trying to take the pi$s out of everyone or it is a very uneducated view
what do you expect from young players? should they all be chris judd???
smith 1st year on an afl list
russell 1st year on an afl list
bentick forced his way onto main list from rookie list
simpson has shown remarkable improvement in 2005

not being picked up in the nat draft and being a rookie does not mean you are not going to make it at afl level.

Opportunity....that is what guys like Bentick, Russell and Smith need. Don't be so quick to write off players just yet. They are extremely young and inexperienced. They will get better. It's easy to bag young fellas like the above mentioned but harder to support them!

Smith will be a good player for us for years to come. No need to rush him onto the senior list though.

Rookies can play in the Wizard Cup and I'd imagine Smith will be in the starting 18 for that.

If he's good now, he should be better in a years time.

Windows, no i dont want to detract anything, pagan came out and made the statement in the heraldsun in july, and as other supporters have stated, why pay out a player when we can keep him as a rookie and then promote him, if at this time next year he isnt on the list, then i will gladly say i was wrong, until then keep your opinions to yourself, or as you put it, just read the posts, anyway who do you even support? Dont see any team next to your name.

Saw every game hey? If Smith is the next Fletcher why didn't Pagan put him on the list? Oh so Carlton goes "hands off" to the other clubs and they listen huh? Am I the only person laughing at this crap?

What did you think of Adam Hartlett's year - assuming you saw every game that is? Where did he play, what sort of contribution did he make? I know the answer to this, because I saw all bar about 3 games.

Guess what I know as a fact? You talk ********.
Guy's I think Windows has a point here, if Smith was so good he would be on our senior list, and I can tell you for a fact that other clubs would take no notice of anyone warning them away from a player - if he is good enough someone would have grabbed him...

By the way Windows tell us then about Hartlett. I am interested in knowing how he performed, what type of player he is and where you think he and his career will end up?

Smith wasn't put onto the senior list because there were no more uncontracted players and thus Carlton couldn't delist anyone else to put him on the list.

Yes but hang on a sec, if he is such a good player then the club would consider paying out someone like a Bannister to get Smith onto the senior list. I just dont buy the fact that the only reason they are not promoting him is because of the financial aspect and the room on the list. They could quite easily delist another player if they wanted - is he better than Wiggins, Sporn, Davies, Bannister, McGrath, Prendergast, Houlihan? If so then the club would delist one of them to bring him on. If he is not then he is not up to
AFL as even these guys are struggling to get a game.

At the end of the day, Pagan likes to play his youngsters in the two for a reasonble length of time. He is far from an amazing player and a certain gun but has shown enough at the VFL level to warrant another year on the rookie list and most likely promotion at the end of next year.

We have enough midfielders coming up in Bentick, Simpson etc to develop this year.

smith is eligible to remain on carlton's rookie list for another year so there is no rush to promote him

carlton have a number of players who are contracted for 2006- davies, sporn, prndergast, chambers, longmuir

makes no sense to sack one of these players as we will have to pay out their contract (we have tried to move away from paying players who are no longer on out list)

meaning we pay a sacked players wage, smith's wage on the primary list and the wage of the replacement rookie

paying for 3 and we can only use 2

the only way another club could pick up smith is if carlton delsitsed him, he quit carlton- as he can only be picked up via a draft (yes even rookies have a draft)

the other altenative is to promote smith and we can pass on draft pick 36.

fact, smith was given the option of going back into the draft, or staying on the rookie list at carlton. was told that he was a certain pick up in the draft but chose to stay on at carlton because he wanted to repay the faith that pagan has shown in him. one more year on the rookie list, because of the financial crap carlton are in thus not allowing any more delistings. pure and simple, great to see he has loyalty already at his age. will be a wonderful player at carlton just give him a go. my imformation comes from a player manager who beleives smith will make the grade, tho will have to go the hard way thru.

Well he was injured for a lot of the year (did a knee just at the start of the year). When he returned, it seemed they were keen at first to try him at CHB, but either he was not quick enough, or he was not used to playing there. They tried him forward a bit later but he just looked physically a little too underdeveloped. He is a thumping kick, and pre season seemed to have a pretty good leap in the practice match i saw him in. Not a fumbler which is good, but the jury is out (I am not sacking him yet - please don't get me wrong). Really made no impression at any stage. Later in the year he looked like he lacked agility/mobility. We need to wait and see how he stacks up after a pre-season and give him a break because he was injured for so long.

I really think forward will be his best option long term. If I was to guess at this stage, well, I'd probably say he'll be lucky to make it because he may be a little one dimensional.
