Jesse White has been serviceable, and quite okay, and although frustrating at times, to have his best ever season in most areas, including 36 goals in 22 games (9 goals were kicked in the VFL) is good and worthy of praise, but he's the whipping-boy who is unfairly bagged. Other players need to have career personal best seasons as he has had.
Why don't we include the goals he kicked at training as well?

You can't include VFL games.

Unless Gault miraculously develops, White is our only decent 2nd ruck option. I know Moore is capable, but I'd rather he focus on his KPF play.
Even with the disappearance of the sub, Witts and Grundy can't seem to play together.
Structurally we need White. The development of Moore will reduce dependence on White as the 2nd tall (which he never was)

And with Cloke getting older and potentially more injury-prone, we need White's experience up front

I'd prefer Cloke's experience up front and White getting older and more injury-prone :P

Bump!

Been thinking about our friend Mr White and just where he can fit into our plans for 2016. With the recruitment of Howe it would seem his options in the forward line may be limited. This has been mentioned previously but I really think a move to the backline could be just what White needs.

In theory his physical attributes should be well suited to playing as a key back. He is strong, fast and agile for a man of his size. His biggest problem is concentration which results in him often going missing in games. I also think he feels the pressure a bit as a forward which results in him missing too many set shots and marks.

If he were given a role in the backline it just might help him to maintain his concentration and turn him into a decent defender. Brown and Reid would still be our first choice key backs but an injury to either leaves us exposed. I believe the club should give White the entire preseason to adjust to the new role and then give him a decent run of games in the VFL to develop further. Worst case scenario is that it doesn't work and he goes back to being a backup forward/ruck. Best case is that we unearth another key defender who can step up if needed. Thoughts?

Yes we have been stretched thin in key defenders since the loss of Tobias Thoolen. May as well give White a crack down back (in the VFL first) if we are not going to get anything out of him forward but in reality we have more key backs than key forwards...

The problem is that our two best key backs are injury prone.

White has none of the attributes that would work as a defender.
Any forward of substance would easiy be able to find separation from him with just simple leading patterns.
Also, i dont think hes a guy we want making decisions on how to get the ball out of defence.

Howe is not a replacement for White. Bucks has already said he wants to use Howe on the wing, and up forward he would be a medium-sized forward, who probabpy actually competes more with Fas and Elliot (who both try to play as medium)

Whites competition comes from 3 other players:
1. Do we play Reid up forward? (doesnt look like a permanent option)
2. Is Moore ready to spend more time as back up ruck?
3. Do we play both Witts and Grundy togethor?

Whites biggest use is as the backup ruck and 2nd/3rd KPF - and at this stage, i actually think he is a better option for the team than those other 3 options. I'm hopeful that 2 rucks may become an effective option, or that Moore can continue to develop as a back-up ruck - but right now i dont think either of those options is very effective. (and I prefer a Cloke-Moore-White forward line, with White rucking)

He has the physical attributes. Whether he has the ability is another matter. That is why I think he needs time to develop in the role. The alternative is to continue with him as a forward/ruck and unless there is an injury to Cloke or Moore he will play out the season in the VFL. Surely it's worth a try?

But i think he does have an important role in our forward line(see above) at least until Moore can spend more time rucking, or a Witts/Grundy combo works.

He's 28 in Jan - how much long term gain could we get from spending the next 12 months trying to turn him into a defender?
Brown, Reid, Frost and Marsh are all quality options, and Keefe is returning next year. In a pinch, Moore has also got the ability to go down back if needed. Even if we lose both Brown and Reid to injury, we have depth options, and I dont see what White could add to that.

Hes not better yet. By round one with a full preseason he might be though.

I'm happy to hang on to White for another year. If hes not best 22 by the end of the season that means two things.... (a) we dont need him any more and (b) we have improved
Good post. No way is Moore better than most of the players that have been on a list for 3+ years right now. He's a kid and he'll take a couple of years to be able to be a KPF of any note. Until then he has huge potential. I expect he'll play some good quarters and halves in 2016 and there will be some games when he goes kissing for the most part. White is probably as good as he'll get. Given we had so many list exits we had to retain him but I can't see any future with him in a premiership side. On that basis I'd play Moore over him every time. The only reason to play White is to retain some trade value but even that is not worth too much sacrifice.

NOt sure if he's got the brains to be KPD but he MIGHT be able to play that loose defender role that Gibson plays. I think two things when it comes to White - 1)he's probably better game sense wise than what we give him credit for and 2) He is not suited to playing as a key forward. I don't think its game sense specifically. I think confidence has a large part to do with the way White plays. A permanent role down back might seem him blossom, without having to be measured in terms of goals kicked.

Can't understand why people think the recruitment of Jeremy Howe with effect Jessie. They are entirely different players. White didn't even have that bad a season it's just that people see he could be so much with his physical attributes. I reckon he'll be in the team until Moore can second ruck without a significant risk of injury. With the 90 interchanges I think Grundy needs a chop out player that won't get fatigued and banged up as much as Moore will.

If you exclude the last five minutes of games, then yeah, I agree, White had a reasonably good year.

Unfortunately, for a club that has the aspirations that Collingwood does, the performance of a player in those last five minutes of games is kinda important.

white delisted woooo

Not sure if serious?

Has been no media reporting of this in over an hour after your post. White is contracted for 2016 too so we would have to pay him out which I'm not sure is a great idea when we aren't exactly flushed with KPF or ruck depth.

Gault (only contacted to this year) would be out before Jesse.

Jesse will be a cog in 2016.

For the simple fact he is our third best key forward, with one of those above him a kid. He can also pinch hit in the ruck.

I'm not so sure Howe necessarily takes his place.

The interesting thing will be whether Reid gets a run up forward. I prefer him back though.

He's full of shit. Never trust anything rusty says if it seems odd.

+1 - if you had have told me that White would have been on pace to kick 30 goals for the season while being thrown at times into the backup ruck role and not forgetting our ridiculously dysfunctional forward setup, woeful delivery a lot of the time into F50 and head-scratching game plan at the start of the year I would have taken it.
