JIM STYNES is only hours away from achieving his bloodless coup at the troubled Melbourne Football Club with the 1991 Brownlow medallist last night receiving an emphatic chorus of approval for the experienced team of businessmen he revealed would make up the board on the eve of his takeover.
Stynes' seven-man ticket — he had been unable to secure his eighth potential director in time for tonight's landmark board meeting — includes Kerry Packer's former legal adviser Guy Jalland, advertising boss Russell Horcroft and banking executive Stuart Grimshaw.
Stynes is understood to have assured incumbent board members yesterday that Bill Guest and Ian Johnson — two former directors associated with the Demons' aborted merger bid — would not be part of his team.
The 42-year-old, Irish-born Stynes released his closely guarded list of names after a meeting early yesterday with John Phillips and Michael Coglin — the two directors who have refused to stand down until they knew more details of Stynes' vision.
Only director and former club chief executive Phillips remained reluctant to step down and could remain on the board following negotiations yesterday between Stynes, Phillips and another director, Michael Coglin.
With Stynes determined to steer the club out of its current financial and geographic wilderness with his own team, a compromise could see Phillips, a former club CEO, remain on the club's finance committee but step down as a director.
Stynes admitted last night that chairman Paul Gardner's decision to bring forward his resignation and announce it at Monday's Queen's Birthday game — as forecast in The Age last week — had forced him to muster his forces quicker than originally planned.
He said that he would unveil further details of his plans to resurrect the club — a 2009 pre-season membership initiative, a desperately needed corporate and sponsorship drive and a push for a series of attractive new home-and-away fixtures — at tonight's talks.
"I'm very excited that we've been able to bring this calibre of people to the club," said Stynes. "They offer a diverse range of skill sets and an enthusiasm I believe will be a terrific step forward for the club."
Coglin echoed the thoughts of most of the current directors when he said: "My personal view is that it's a very, very impressive group of individuals and their names and records make me feel very confident the club is in good hands.
"But the other half of the equation is the plan and Jim assures us that that will form the substance of his presentation to the board."
Coglin said that he would push for Phillips to remain at the club as a director. "He is an impressive performer, has been great and stepped in as CEO during our darkest hour in 2004. There is the opportunity under our constitution for 12 directors. I know Jim is looking at 11 to start with but he is on the top of a learning curve and John Phillips in the 12th chair in my view is better than an empty chair."
Also on Stynes' ticket — most of whom were revealed to AFL chief Andrew Demetriou several weeks ago — are Peter Szental, the founder and owner of water and energy efficiency company Szencorp Group, Don McLardy, the director of Insurance Advisernet Australia and David Thurin, the managing director and owner of developer Tigcorp.
McLardy, a long-time community and amateur football stalwart has been Stynes' running mate for some months while current directors Karen Hayes, Andrew Leoncelli and Peter Spargo will stay on the board.
Demetriou said last night: "All I said to Jim was that the last thing this club needs is a divisive situation and a battle. I'm sure he has been working to ensure that this doesn't happen."
STYNES' TICKET

Guy Jalland LLB: Sydney-based with strong media executive background including his current role with Consolidated Press Holdings. Life-long Demon fan.
Stuart Grimshaw: Experienced banking and financial services executive, currently group executive of Premium Business Services.
Peter Szental: Founder and owner of the Szencorp Group, focusing on water and energy efficiency solutions for the built environment.
Don McLardy: Highly experienced executive with an extensive history at Melbourne Football Club.
David Thurin: Managing director and owner of Tigcorp, which runs retirement communities. Has a medical background and is a long-time Demon supporter.
Russell Howcroft: Chairman and chief executive of the advertising agency George Patterson.

So the new board is decided via Jimmy, except he wants one more person who could not be persuaded in time, could be Don Argus, guess we find that out after the Annual General Meeting, exciting times ahead

Apparently a press conference was announced for 6pm tonight, but they're still in the club meeting. I don't know what to make of it.

While I am loathe to get my hopes up in any way, it does sound promising. If Argus can get on board that will make things even better!

Hopefully he's just saving a few four-leafed clovers for a rainier day.

The biggest thing that the media will be all over is that he said if our financial situation doesn't improve moving is a real possibility.

It's a possibility but a LONG way from happening. If we do the right things like we should have been doing over the last decade then we can get ourselves back on track.

What else was said on SEN?

That's pretty much all they had. 3AW were the same. They said they'll have audio of the presser by 8:30ish

TFS for once will be must-watch viewing.

If they barely cover it I will be extremely shitty.

Garry will make sure it gets plenty of coverage! :thumbsu:

It's all good mate, Jimmy is the Chairman!

Saw the quick snippet of his press conference where he got all emotional, bloody fired me up!!! Love to see that passion for the club!

He was good just then on TFS as well. He really looks like the right man for the job.

The guys on the panel just mentioned also, that the head of Adelaide (Bill Sanders) has come out saying that the funding that us, North, and the WB get from the AFL should be taken away. I'm kinda lost for words. It's very easy when you get over 45,000 members year in, year out, to come out saying stuff like that. Some people have really shown their true colours this season, willing to kick teams like us when we're down.

When this club returns to where it deserves to be, and begins winning premierships again, I'll be the first one burning dog shit on the front doorstep of Jeff Kennett, Bill Sanders, and anyone else who wants to talk us down.

F*cking oath. I'll join you.

You can't help but be rubbed the wrong way by the interstate teams who demand that the ASD be taken away. They wouldn't be in this league if it wasn't for us in the first place.

We might be taking a long time to get ourselves right but, when we DO get ourselves right, I'll be letting everyone know about it! If any Melbourne fan watching tonight wasn't a member, they should be signing up now after seeing what Jimmy had to say. Surely we can rouse up another 2,000 or so over the next 2 weeks to get us to 30,000?

I'm genuinely excited.

Off field: Stynes and McNamee, particularly Stynes are going to be at the forefront of ensuring the survival of this club, both who appear willing to roll up their sleeves and do something about it. I know some ignorant doomsayers are talking shit about Stynes not having a vision, but they fail to realise that Melbourne lacks identity which is clearly the #1 priority of both of these men and their colleagues. They'll get the job done, all with having the clubs best interests at heart. The Casey and OP projects and hopefully an improved relationship with the MCC, it's all coming together. We just need to be patient and everything will fall into place.

On field: Bailey and Connolly imploring a new, accountable culture at the club and I couldn't be happier with that. Bailey comes across as being an incredibly competent coach across all fields of the job and I can only imagine how good he will be once we get the cattle, cattle that he'll develop himself.

We're here to stay fellas. The only reason why doomsayers talk so much shit is because they're so goddamn full of it.

Stynes, McNamee, Bailey, Connolly, McLean, Jones:thumbsu:

All we can hope for now is the great man Luke Williams to make a glorious return to the club...

FEEL THE LOVE

Let me just say guys, having Guy Jalland on the board is going to be absolutely phenomenal for you guys.

Despite the fact that he lives up here in Sydney, the guy absolutely lives and breathes the Melbourne Football Club.

If anyone can help Jim bring you guys back to the glory days, it's him.

The thing is what i find funny is Garry Lyon didnt ask the questionsm(he knows EVERYTHING) the man has something to do with it and he aint even hiding it its rather funny, he does pretend to hide it though... kinda odd

Thought the whole footy show thing was done really well and its great to see some-one that genuinly builds red and blue getting out there and helping our club.

G'day fellas, good luck to Jim, wish him all the best :thumbsu:
