So the new board is decided via Jimmy, except he wants one more person who could not be persuaded in time, could be Don Argus, guess we find that out after the Annual General Meeting, exciting times ahead
JIM STYNES is only hours away from achieving his bloodless coup at the troubled Melbourne Football Club with the 1991 Brownlow medallist last night receiving an emphatic chorus of approval for the experienced team of businessmen he revealed would make up the board on the eve of his takeover.
Stynes' seven-man ticket — he had been unable to secure his eighth potential director in time for tonight's landmark board meeting — includes Kerry Packer's former legal adviser Guy Jalland, advertising boss Russell Horcroft and banking executive Stuart Grimshaw.
Stynes is understood to have assured incumbent board members yesterday that Bill Guest and Ian Johnson — two former directors associated with the Demons' aborted merger bid — would not be part of his team.
The 42-year-old, Irish-born Stynes released his closely guarded list of names after a meeting early yesterday with John Phillips and Michael Coglin — the two directors who have refused to stand down until they knew more details of Stynes' vision.
Only director and former club chief executive Phillips remained reluctant to step down and could remain on the board following negotiations yesterday between Stynes, Phillips and another director, Michael Coglin.
With Stynes determined to steer the club out of its current financial and geographic wilderness with his own team, a compromise could see Phillips, a former club CEO, remain on the club's finance committee but step down as a director.
Stynes admitted last night that chairman Paul Gardner's decision to bring forward his resignation and announce it at Monday's Queen's Birthday game — as forecast in The Age last week — had forced him to muster his forces quicker than originally planned.
He said that he would unveil further details of his plans to resurrect the club — a 2009 pre-season membership initiative, a desperately needed corporate and sponsorship drive and a push for a series of attractive new home-and-away fixtures — at tonight's talks.
"I'm very excited that we've been able to bring this calibre of people to the club," said Stynes. "They offer a diverse range of skill sets and an enthusiasm I believe will be a terrific step forward for the club."
Coglin echoed the thoughts of most of the current directors when he said: "My personal view is that it's a very, very impressive group of individuals and their names and records make me feel very confident the club is in good hands.
"But the other half of the equation is the plan and Jim assures us that that will form the substance of his presentation to the board."
Coglin said that he would push for Phillips to remain at the club as a director. "He is an impressive performer, has been great and stepped in as CEO during our darkest hour in 2004. There is the opportunity under our constitution for 12 directors. I know Jim is looking at 11 to start with but he is on the top of a learning curve and John Phillips in the 12th chair in my view is better than an empty chair."
Also on Stynes' ticket — most of whom were revealed to AFL chief Andrew Demetriou several weeks ago — are Peter Szental, the founder and owner of water and energy efficiency company Szencorp Group, Don McLardy, the director of Insurance Advisernet Australia and David Thurin, the managing director and owner of developer Tigcorp.
McLardy, a long-time community and amateur football stalwart has been Stynes' running mate for some months while current directors Karen Hayes, Andrew Leoncelli and Peter Spargo will stay on the board.
Demetriou said last night: "All I said to Jim was that the last thing this club needs is a divisive situation and a battle. I'm sure he has been working to ensure that this doesn't happen."
