Since supporting Port since the start of 1988, this would be my Greatest Port team from 88-2000

FF Wayne Mahney, Scott Hodges, David Brown
HF Darryl Borlase, Darren Smith, David Hutton
C Phil Harrison, Stephen Williams, Simon Tregenza
HB Brian Leys, Stephen Carter, Paul Northeast
FB George Fiacchi, Roger Delaney, Paul Rizonico
R Russel Johnston, Tim Ginever, Phil Mcguiness

I Darryl Poole, Nigel Fiegert, Rohan Smith, Richard Foster

Em: Greg Phillips, Brett Chalmers, Andrew Obst, Mark Tylor, Tom Carr,

Interesting team Macca....

bit generous with Tom Carr I think...had big hopes for the lad but not sure what he has actually done ??

Are you kidding??? Tommy's heroic deeds in the 1998 GF against Sturt (remember that shirtfront) and 1999 GF against Norwood (the spoil against that huge full forward) are the stuff of legends...

hmmmmm but in the top 27 Port players since '88 ???

I would have Mead, Wilson, Wanganeen before young Carr any day.

Don't know if Macca was just referring to the magpies but even still those three all played for the Magpies in the period.

I had sort of a thing of not picking anyone that didnt play more than 40 games for the club...so that makes Wanganeen, Cockatoo Collins, Buckley and i think wilson unavailable.
To me those two instances in the two Grand Finals where he put the teams goodwill in front of his own were just magic...his shirtfront on Nathan Irvin is still the biggest bump ive ever seen, and ever will see i reckon. And yeah, it was just a Magpies team...Mead was very unlucky to miss out

Excellent post. I'll have to think about this. What about Leslie on the half back line? In my view, I guess establishing that line of Phillips Leslie and Abernethy not only won 88 but set in place a pattern that Jack relied on. But I've forgotten - when did he leave? Was it 89? Help, Alzheimers setting in.

The start point is an interesting one to consider, for example isf I go back as far as I was first a member, 1964, then I have the 4 best full forwards Port has ever had, Rex Johns, Eric freeman, Tim Evans & Scott Hodges
Then for CHF I can consider Ian Hannaford, Dave Granger, Dwayne Russell & Darren Smith.
Centre is easy, there's only one Russell Ebert.
CHB is a problem though with Peter Woite, Greg Phillips & Martin Leslie.
Full Back is interesting, I really just missed out on seeing John Abley, my misfortune, but I can choose from Ron Elleway, Trevor Sorrell, Danny Hughes & Roger Delaney.
Rucks haven't been our strongest points, but we have had some useful players like Kevin Salmon, Keith Spencer, Paul Marrett, Leon Milde, Jack Spry, "Sticks" Dolan (1 good game), Dexter Kennedy, Ian Verrier, Russell Johnson & Brett Chalmers.
Ruck-rovers, we have had some characters, Stephen Clifford, Milan Faletic, Mark Williams, Stephen Williams & Andrew Obst
Rovers for Port have been great ones, like Jeff Potter, Brian Cunningham, Darrell Cahill, Tim Ginever & David Brown
Back Pockets you look at Trevor Obst, Carl Fragomeni, Steve Curtis & George Fiacchi.
Half Bank Flankers include Dennis Errey, Tony Giles, Ivan Eckermann, Len Warren, Bruce Abernathy, Paul Northeast and Steve Carter.
Wingmen are Peter Yeo, John Cahill, Bruce Light, Kym Kinnear, Tony Martyn, Greg Anderson, Simon Tregenza, Anthony Darcy.
Half forwards Andy Porplycia, Gary Tredrea, Gavin Wanganeen, Troy Bond, Shane Bond, Rohan Smith, Darrel Borlase.

Just a few of the names that come to mind, putting them in a team is too hard for me, at the moment anyway, lol

I have come up with my best team in that period. I have gone with Macca 40+ games criteria.

F Hynes Hodges Brown
HF Borlase D. Smith R.Smith
C Trengenza S.Williams Hutton
HB Northeast Phillips Abernethy
B Fiacchi Delaney Leslie
R Johnston Obst Ginever
Int (from) McGuinness,Chalmers,Poole,Carter,Leys,Mead,Anderson

This was pretty hard to do, I have probably forgotten someone.

I had a bit of trouble picking the side!!!

You could only really choose Hodges as full forward going from 1988 onwards! Tylor, Hutton, Mahney, Settre, Troy Bond, Beinke, Evans, Ashley, Borlase and Russell Boyd to consider in the Pockets and Flanks. You could only really have Darren Smith at HF. Wingmen would of included - Abernathy, Harrison, West, Tregenza, Anderson, Rohan Smith, Darren Fraser to consider. Centremen - Bamford, Ginever, Brown, S Williams, M Williams, Obst, Clayton, Mcguiness to consider.
HB line, probably the hardest - Phillips, Carter, Fiegert, Carr, Morgan, Foster, Northeast, Pedler, Poulton, Leys
FB line - Delaney and Fiacchi were certainties, Rizonico, Warton,
Then there is bigmen, Chalmers, Poole, Damien Brown, Johnston, Hynes, Mead, Crothers (not sure about the 40 games tho)

it was hard to choose...then there is the players who didnt play enough- Darcy, Waterhouse, Wanganeen, Robbie West, Fellows, Fiora,
