Channel 10 News tonight said that Misiti will enter the pre-season draft. I suppose that he could still come to terms with the Bombers. But nearing the end of his career he would want to get the most from his next contract.

We must get him.

We could do this through the Pre - season draft.

Surely the Saints and Dockers could not get him and stay within the salary cap.

With our early draft picks he could help us buy time whilst the kids develop.

What are your thoughts?

GO EAGLES!

i think we have a good chance of picking him up, it just depends on who has the money
i'd like to think that Freo and the Saints are close to their salary cap

Hmmm ...

Wouldnt it be safe to say, that especially seeing the rule that you have to spenda minimum of 95% of your cap by AFL law, and the fact you didnt trade any players, and any delistings to occur wont be the highly paid stars, that you too at most will have lests say 8% of the ssalary cap free - but with players such as matera, jakovich, Gardiner, Cousins and Wirrapunda all on top $$$, how can you think West Coast are any less closer tot he cap, than say Freo?

Modra was on plenty, as were Fletch, Black, Bandy and Fewster - who is out of contract and wont be picked up again ... now of course both Farmer and Croad aint cheap, but also from what I am hearing another reasonablyhighly paid former west coaster Metropolis is liekly to be cut - meaning we do have alot of space comparatively to work with.

So for mine, we will be getting the best oplayer available, and need midfielders, so smoking joe? why not!

Freo are kidding themselves. Farmer is worth a LOT!! And Croad will be just as much, you have to give out money for Simmonds too. You wont be able to pick Misiti up. West Coast on the other hand should have room and if he is available i think it would be stupid not to get him.

Cousins, Smokin Joe and Kerr...i like it, could you imagine if Tommy was still fit and ready to go *sigh*

um ...

Jod, with all due respect - did you read a word I wrote above your post? :)

Modra, Fletcher, Bandy, Black and Fewster combined contracts OUTWEIGH the incoming Farmer, Croad et al.

And my point still remains, unless you delist one of your highly paid players, where are you getting the room to draft him - you didnt trade anyone, and havent delisted yet, to my knowledge, anyone on any sort of contract.

So seriously, where is this supposed salary cap room coming from?

My calculations go like this

Kemp -$200K (Half of 400K as he was a vet)
Matera-$100K (Salary reduction of new contract)
Donnelly -$250K
Turnbull -$150K
Cummings $-200K ( I believe he was on around $450K and this would be reduced substantially if a new contract is offered)
Harding -$150K

Total $1.05M

I think that gives room for 2 very good players in the pre season draft

There is no way that Donnelly was on $250K a year. He would have been on $150K at the most......

Um, I heard Freo were the closest to using their whole salary cap last season. I think the following players would take up heaps:

Bell - reported to be taking 1/6 of all the money available
Croad - you're going to be paying him big
Farmer - ****loads again like Bell (how else did Freo lure him)
Waterhouse - not huge but substantial

and I suspect some of your younger players will too have quite big contracts trying to keep them over here (Brown & Pavlich).

After saying all that, from what I've heard in the paper, Misiti is staying at Essendon and all the players are taking pay cuts. Who now are the un-contracted players and when is the pre-season draft? Was it Wilson we took in the draft last year?

Vis

Salient points, however ...

From who Vis? Someone posting on here, or actually someone with any idea, as I find that very hard to believe.

$900,000 a year you think!! Nah champ, around 600k I believe, but he isnt new, that is already accounted for.
Croad - you're going to be paying him big
Yes, 450k a year, but we made space already for that!
Farmer - ****loads again like Bell (how else did Freo lure him)
Believe it or not, players do want to play fro Freo over WCE Vis, hard as it may be for you to belieeve! ;)
Seriously, he's on under 400k - he wanteed to come to Perth, is an old Schoolmate of Belly's from Tambellup, and a good South Freo lad at that - and you guys didnt want to pick him up for whatever reason ... so it wasn't $$$$ really at all.
Waterhouse - not huge but substantial
Sure, he is on a bit as well, once again that isnt new $$$, from new players - existing contract.
All my point is, that Freo has just as much chance to get anyone in the pre-season draft as you guys ... and with the #1 pick we get our choice - I hear Corey McGrath and Ryan Houlihan are both up for contract - Corey being a good Sth Freo lad would be perfect asd a pacey 'outside' midfielder for us ... so lets hope we see him come back to WA!

I heard via the media that if Freo has signed up Gaspar, that 1/3 of the salary cap would be used on these two players. Hence 1/6 for Belly. Might be a bit much but he's still earning big bucks.

Read in the newspaper about Freo spending the most of their salary cap. Don't ask me where though, I can't remember.

Yeah I know about the Farmer situation Kep, yes I realise that playing for WC aint the greatest prospect at the moment, but he will still be earning 400,000 - 450,000 a year is my bet.

Why I am bothering with this anyway, its boring the hell outta me! :D

Have you considered the possibility of Misiti, McGrath,Houlihan etc and even Cuummings, Matera , Fletcher (Freo) not being available for the pre-season draft!

They could nominate for the National draft. In which case unless they are left by pick 98 or Freo uses pick 4 for one then Freo will miss out on them but the eagles would be in a strong position.
They only have to agree terms with the player and agree to pick him up. Of course the risk is that another club picks him first but as players have to stipulate salary requirements the clubs that could afford to pick one are probably few.

Yes, I'll back up what Vis is saying, I heard on the radio, saw on the news and read in the paper that Freo was closest to the cap last year. HAving said that i also agree with Kuepper at this stage that Freo freed a HUGE chunk of the salary cap with the retiring Mods, probably delisting of metro etc, and as yet the Eagles haven't done anything. Having said that, Some salaries will be reduced, ie Cummings, and Donnelly and Kemp gone will give us a bit. Also, we haven't delisted yet Kuepper, but we have to to be able to draft players like you must, and the ones we do will probably be on more than what a first year player is, so for every delisting mor will be freed. By the time the pre-season draft comes IF(this is a big if now) Misiti IS in the mix, we should be able to fit him in, but as it stands now Essendon want to keep him, are asking there players to take another pay cut to fit him in.

This is where an interesting question comes in. With the Bombers having such a good team for a couple of years, the players would have probably not minded taking a pay cut before as they would have thought HEAPS of success would come with it if they kept the team together. Now that they have so badly underachieved, will they be so willing to take another pay cut?

Pay cuts

I cant see this as a reality, more like a cap cheating effort with whatever is cut being paid through the back door.

Let's face it, a player has around ten years maximum (many less) as a player and then is on the scrap heap. They are stupid if they take less money out of 'loyalty'. Life isn't like that and they all have managers who are there to build them a nestegg for the future.

I mean come on!! A player gets to two GF's in a row after two minor premierships and says " Hey, I'll take a pay cut" !!!!!!!!!!!!

More like " Hey boss I DEMAND A RAISE"

Here's something you people missed about your calculations on the salary cap, if a contracted player gets delisted then his outstanding salary gets counted under the salary cap.

So if Metro is on $250,000 a year with 2 years on his contract left and he gets delisted, then for the next two years Freo will be operating with $250,000 less in their cap.

This explains why sometimes players expected to get the sack don't, and why sometimes absolute hacks(Martyn, Daffy, etc) get traded.

If that's true we have to figure in Harding, Milli and Jako because they are all contracted.
