I love the way this man epitomises the Geelong culture and ethos in putting the team first and foremost. He is obviously in a great mental state, where at 30 he is still looking to improve and get the best out of himself, for the benefit of helping the side achieve more success.
He maybe one of the most underrated players in the league, and a player we hear very little about but boy he gives his all on every occassion he represents the jumper.
I think he may play on for a year or 2 yet depending on his body. Let's hope so because the team is in a better position with players like Smitty out on the field.
It's good that we can gather a little insight into the man that we rarley hear anything about.:D

there is a comment on another thread that Chappy might be setting himself for a big year, usually if he says something he follows through with action. I wonder if Corey and the other players around that age are seeing their career end in sight and would see this year as a great opportunity to combine with the young guys for another major tilt at the flag. Injury seems to be the bigger obstacle with age, hoping Corey has an injury free run because he is as integral to our success as anyone else.

One of my absolute favorites at our great Club. Just love the way he puts it on the line and his determination must inspire each week.
Had the pleasure of talking to him and his Mum at a function early in his career - just very polite and humble , obvious they were both close with Mum obviously missing her boy.
Great to see a good guy getting the rewards , sensational role model.

Absolute stalwart of the club, been a great servant for us. Spot on how he epitomises the clubs culture of team first, a great leader and role model for the younger players coming through.

And of course any excuse to post this, the play the epitomises the great man himself.

they say that you never know what you have until it's gone...

May I present Joel Corey...

I am pretty sure that in the annals of Geelong history he will be spoken of as highly as Scarlo and Ablett.

He has always been there just doing his thing - albeit brilliantly - but he has just never been one of the flashy talked about players.

Cyril Rioli for example gets all kinds of media plaudits.....

and I would have Joel Corey 100 times out of a 100 in my team.

Why?

Because when Cyril goes missing no one really notices....

When Joel Corey goes missing... we tend to struggle...( and you can see how much we have struggled in the last 5 years..)

Look at all the close finishes where we have won.... I guarantee that you will find JC crashing a pack head over it at a contest getting the ball forward...

Not ragging on Cyril per se but just to illustrate the point...

Go Catters...

Has there ever been a more important passage of play, one single action, by one player, than that smother in all of VFL/AFL history?

You could mount a case that without Corey, the Cats would still be sitting on 6 GFs, most of the core group of players would have left years ago, there'd be no Kardinia Park upgrades, we'd all have serious drinking and relationship problems, Todd Viney would be our 3rd coach in 5 years, and we'd all be wishing Kent never went to the Tiges.

Even worse, we could have ended up like St.Kilda.

You forgot to mention Kevin Rudd would still be prime minister ,Bin Laden would still be free, and the aussie dollar would be at record low levels.....

All jokes aside I love the guy and you are right. He is a great and underrated warrior for the club- but he's got a few mates

I'd get laughed at on the main board for bringing this up, but have a look at Joel Corey's career, then compare it to Lenny Hayes'. Consider the fact that Hayes is more than two years older and how close Smithy came to his third Carji in 2011. Just sayin'...

Agree with the bolded. Just look at the game where Jimmy kicked the point after the siren to pip Hawthorn in 2009. No prizes for guessing who the bloke was who put the ball onto his boot to get the ball forward which allowed Jimmy to take the mark...

great article. thanks for posting OP

The Articles headline couldn't have been better written regarding Corey.
Considering Corey rarely speaks and let's his onfield actions do the talking, I wanted to post the article out of esteemed admiration, not only from myself but the majority of Geelong supporters who have had the pleasure in watching his entire career.

As an earlier poster noted, we really notice when JC is not there. Take our mid-season losses last year and our fade-out at the end of '10 when JC was struggling with injury.

Corey Enright always held the title as the AFL's most under-rated player, but with a handful of AAs and Carjis......now, our other 'Corey' can assume that title.

I'm absolutely STUNNED to learn that Smithy is a secret ranga!!!

Back in the day we celebrated the ABC of Geelong success
Ablett
Bartel
Corey

He fits well into that company. Well except he remained loyal.
There was an earlier post on this thread that mentioned that Chappy is shaping up for a big end of this year (probably his career) and that Corey is in the same boat.
Couldn't agree more. I think Corey doesn't know how many games he has left and is determined to go out with a bang
We have the cattle to go with him
Smithy is a star who may shine brightest at the end
