They all get kept quiet from time to time, and a coach or player figures out even the best of them.

And Hawthorn figured out Joel tonight. For a while.

But he kept on coming at them. He kept on trying to find a way. Some of the desperation shown by Joel was classic, but not always successful.

In the last quarter it almost came together for him. Goal kicking let him down a bit. But who cares. He was magnificent.

Never seen a player break through like that. Buddy couldn't do it. We figured him out. Rioli couldn't do it. There was a plan there too.

But Joel did.

He has found another gear tonight.

Joel was IMMENSE in the 4th. He was absolutely instrumental in our victory.

Great move by Chris Scott to play him up forward, the Hawks just couldnt contain his intensity.

I'm seriously in love with this bloke. Have been since the day he debuted, but he just keeps reaffirming that love every single game.

I love the idea of Joel resting up forward, something that he has done a bit of this year. A move created out of little Gaz & Rooke leaving, the new sub rule & lack of fwd line pressure that was evident late last year.

I don't think he'll ever be as good a natural goalkicker as Ablett, but jeez he reminded me alot of Rooke and that can only be good. The way he just got that ball forward and set up all 3 goals in the last qtr was down to sheer will power and determination, which was Max's greatest strength and a missing ingredient in the fwd line since the '09 GF.

Mmmm agree his effort was great but geez he missed a shot nearly directly in front, and I nearly smashed the TV when he kicked it out on the full when all we needed was a score to get 6 points up. We know he's not the greatest kick for goal, but that kick for goal from the boundary was a bit dumb, just get it to the goal line and let us punch it through if anything.

Bingo, the advantage of having a good game day coach.

i greatly admire joel but that shot from the boundary was a terrible decision, instead of kicking it to the square where it was almost guarantee to be punched through for a behind to put geelong 6 points up... it came back the other way and put us under the pump... if buddy got a hold of the ball anywhere around the 5 arch, hawks certainly would have won. however, his 4th quarter got us over the line; so gonna take the good with bad.

however, yes joel you are a gun, you will be the future captain of geelong, will play at least over 250 games, probably win a brownlow and will be considered one of the best of your era with pendlebury, murphy, kennedy and maybe thomas.

Seriously guys, I could give a shit about those missed shots.

It will come. Anyone who plays like that will break through on those things.

The important thing was that he was looking for a way to contribute all game and never dropped his head.

Franklin, Hodge, and Rioli were covered all day and went out with a whimper.

Not Selwood.

Thought Rioli was good

for a right footer, it was a damn hard shot, plus he for some reason (we seem to be one of the few teams that listens to umpires re angles) was on some crazy angle inside the boundary line. shouldnt have gone out on the full though.

What the? He has played 100 games you know?
When exactly will it 'come'?

The only area of his game that I think will improve his the depth of his kicks.
It's an area Gaz didn't improve until he was strong enough.

Selwood hit the post half way up from 50+ last night so maybe it is coming.

Selwood would train goal kicking like the rest. All he needs is a few in and it will click. Never worry about that shit. Thats what Mooney did: worry, worry, worry. Written all over Mooney's face when he kicks for goal. Selwood trains, it will come. With his mental attitude, bet on it. :thumbsu:

Selwood doesn't have the 'I must kick this goal' attitude.
I had it too. I didnt miss a heap but my first instinct when in range was to give it to someone else. It wasn't a yip thing. It's just how my mind worked.

Selwood seems to have it when kicking for goal and Varcoe has a similar thing when holding the ball. i.e he doesn't back himself to carry it. His first though is to find someone to carry it.

Gazza was the complete opposite in both regards. "let me carry it for you, let me kick it for you"

Selwood does not have the latter, and you're dreaming if you think he does.
He has the 'let me get it for you'

As for goal kicking, every player gets that job from time to time, and someone like Joel gets enough opportunities.

Its a skill thing. Once the technique and rhythm is right, he will be fine.

He can barely make it from 40, employs the GAJ shuffle from 55 and hits the post.

Maybe he should use it more.

vinum seriously mate, you don't know this club to well do ya:thumbsd: the % of time Gazza has spent in the forward line to help accomodate his natural instincts around the big sticks is far greater than what Joel has been given in his 1st 100 games. Ablett spent a heap of time forward early on before eventually being told by the senior boys to improve your workload and become a gun midfielder. Joel has played 100 games of top class gun midfielding. He will only improve his goal kicking as he gets more time down there to do so and judging by his early comments of wanting to kick more goals then it will surely be coming.
You are dreaming if you think otherwise:rolleyes:

The GAJ shuffle is starting to get a hold. I have seen a few AFL stutterers try this with good effect. Joel would do well to keep it up.

He has no trouble hitting 50 m targets on the tit but a 40m goal from straight in front is a big ask at the moment. I expect he is working on this and being a Selwood that means lots of work.
