Barton, who captained Chris Hughton's side in Saturday's 3-0 victory at Carlisle, told the Evening Chronicle: "First and foremost, I want to do well for Newcastle United. But watching some of the performances in the World Cup over the summer I think that on form, I'm as good as anybody in this country.

Barton said exactly the same thing after the 2006 world cup. Went onto say he was now totally committed and was getting up at 6am every morning so he would be there in four years time. He went on with more dribble how he turned his life around etc, etc. He laid into Gerrard and Lampard and how crap they were in Germany (that part I agreed with, and to be honest nothing really changed 4 years later).

However the funniest part of the story was that a reporter sought comment from Frank Lampard. Lampard's quote was pure gold and something along these lines: 'The difference between me and Barton is that I have been getting up at 6am for training since I was 11'.

I love the bloke. Hes a grade A w***er but atleast he admits it. Some of his comments are hilarious such as

'England did nothing in that World Cup, so why were they bringing books out? 'We got beat in the quarter-finals. I played like s***. Here's my book.' Who wants to read that?​

Barton sat down at Lampards table during Englain training camp. Lampard got up and moved to a different table and Barton let out with this ripper

"It's alright, I'm not going to steal your breakfast you fat prick."
