LONGMIRE has been listed second favourite for the North Melbourne coaching job, and geez, good luck to him after waiting in the wings so long.

But from a Sydney point of view, how do people feel about the Roos "succession plan" in light of the North vacancy coming up?

I am aware many Swans posters have expressed concern at the idea Roos hands over to Longmire before his contract is up, and Horse pretty much maintains the Roos philosophy, while others see Longmire's enhanced influence on the team as being part of the reason for our slightly different style this season (more handballing, playing on, etc).

This time last year I was pretty confident Longmire would be our next coach, but I have a strong suspicion he's right in the mix at North, for three main reasons: 1) he's a North boy; 2) he'd be a lot cheaper than Buckley (I would think), and 3) he's been such a big part of Sydney's success under Roos.

Should Longmire win the Kangaroos job, who do we look at as a likely replacement for Roos, if and when he goes?

Ken Hinkley at Geelong is regarded very highly, and is apparently one of the key architects of Geelong's style of footy, and Damien Hardwick has had a great apprenticeship as an assistant. I'd be happy with either of those blokes, but one last question: would anyone here want us to chase Buckley if the opportunity arose?

Well Roosy came out the other day and nominated John for the NM gig, just take a look at Ross Lyon, coached under Roos and now coaching a great footy side with good times ahead. Roosy is a great mentor and John is a fit and ready coach for the North Melbourne FC.

All the driven media talk about Nathan Buckley is overrating the fact that Bucks has NEVER coached at AFL coaching assistant level, whereas Longmire has.

Brett Kirk to retire.... Then Coach :thumbsu:

Paul Kelly wound be an awesome choice of coach in my opinion (The fans would go crazy)

But in all seriousness... Hinkley, Hardwick or Justen Lepppich (Has actually coach a game for Brisbane when L Mathews was sick... and is very well regarded) would be great choices

I'd hope Roos re-signs until, say, 2014, so Kirk can step up straight away. I've always been very hesitant in support for Horse, as I do think he'd just keep us playing the same way, and whilst I love Roos, I think after he goes we need a breath of fresh air. I'd be more than happy him taking the NM gig, and it'd give Roos a bit of a legacy in the AFL! Lyon has shown how good Roos can teach young coaches.

I agree. I find it a little strange that so many people are keen to have Horse as our head coach and yet so many people are sick of the way we play. I seriously doubt that Horse's coaching methods would be much different from Roos'.

I would love to see kirk as an assistant coach. I would do so many stupid things to see him involved with our club just that little bit longer

Longmire would obviously be in the box seat when Roosy retires but I hope we'd at least still go a through a formal process to find the best man for the job. Having said that, it's a bit unfair to assume Horse won't bring any ideas or a style of his own to the job, just look at what Lyon has done at the saints this year.

Maybe we should just go for a breath of fresh air like Buckley though hey? What, with his impressive CV and all:

- 'Special' comments on channel 7
- Avoiding premiership success as a player
- Sitting in the coaches box listening to Malthouse lose his shit and reel off baffling Chinese proverbs.

Agreed, ex-superstars who go out of the game, commentate and coach the juniors would absolutely fail as coaches. Like that Michael Voss! Absolute spud! Sitting on 7 wins 5 losses!

Er...

Michael Voss 3 Premierships.
Nathan Buckley is the equivalent of Fremantle's trophy cupboard.

Yeh... 2 losing grand finals.

lol, I'm impressed Vonn.:thumbsu:

I'm not saying that you can't be a successful coach without being an assistant for an extended period but you can't tell me it isn't a big advantage. Being a champion player doesn't translate into being a champion coach either, the names Tim Watson and Danny Frawley come to mind.

Putting aside reputation and hype, if I had the CVs of Buckley and Longmire side by side I know which one I'd choose.

Yeh... 2 losing grand finals.

So you're saying that because Voss was in a team that could win essentially two more GAMES than Buckley - one of which which was by a couple of kicks - Buckley will automatically be a hack coach?

I don't want Buckley at the Swans, he's the last person I'd want - no one from the Pies!! - but he's still just as credentialled as Voss, who I wrote off at the start of the year and now have egg on my face. A lot of people underestimate the work put into coaching the U18 side.

Just 2 cents here. Buckley is being highly overrated by the media and TBH he's probably overrating himself too. Most players that want to become coaches start off as an assistant to gather some experience like Ross Lyon. I can understand why Voss would go straight to coaching Brisbane, because he just knows the team so well and won 3 flags with them but what would Buckley know about something like the Swans?

While I don't think the Swans will get John Longmire because all players seem to love going back to their old club and North would be hungry for someone who was an assistant to Paul Roos, think outside the box! Paul Williams is currently an assistant coach at the Dogs, he might want to make a return too.

No I'm saying he played in two losing grand finals.. And yeh I know all that it's just one game thing eg geelong 2008 but at the end of the day.. It's what every footballer dreams about..

And for the record the media love him because his "collingwood"

I can't see nth going for him even though he is a ex player just not fashionable enough, all you hear now is about being a salesman first coach second.North are in abit of financal trouble ,someone like buckley would help drive membership and cause abit of excitement down arden st.Remember just like the draft athelete first footballer second.

Yeah, it's what players dream about, but I just don't see how one player possibly missing a goal and changing the result would increase Buckley's ability to coach.

longmire was very fashionable only 2-3 years ago

he's second only to buckley imo

if john longmire left for a senior coaching position, we should chase dean laidley for an assistant coaching role provided he doesn't get a better offer

imagine the knowledge and techniques that could be shared by these two coaches, will add a new dimension to the game

as far as i am concerned chasing laidley is more important that chasing any individual player from the trade

So you're suggesting that a former head coach would apply for an assistant coaching job?:rolleyes:The only way we would get a guy like Laidley is if in the last few years of his tenure Roos "officially"manufactured a coaching co-ordinator position for himself. Not going to happen.
It's an interesting situation North find themselves in atm.On the one hand do they go for a guy that has been in the AFL coaching system for a while to maybe have a more immediate on-field impact(ie results) or do they go for the guy with the status in the AFL who could garner the support by promoting the club (ie bring in the dollars.)
Its common knowledge (not just in the business world) that to make money you have to spend a bit. This is where North's major concern has to be atm.Getting things in place off the field to ensure the results on field will follow. It helps if you have to have some behind you as well, but I think a guy with Bucks profile is where they should be looking. He has a no nonsense , hard edged approach that I think would suit North right now.
True , you may get some of the people back to the club if you get a guy like Horse, but will those same supporters be willing to show him the faith if, after his third year say, things in terms of changing of lists(remember that the GC concessions will kick in soon)have meant that their relative ladder position hasn't altered much to that of where they were when Laidley left.
