John Mayer - where to begin?

I like many had a John Mayer phase early on. In fact, I think Heavier Things was the first album I got after picking up a CD Walkman (ipods were still highly covetable, ridiculously expensive and rare IRL back then), so along with Room For Squares I played both a fair bit around 13/14. Both are fondly recalled as vintage late preteen albums, particularly Heavier Things which was consistent throughout. It's the sort of music you can imagine a Wonder Years type protagonist listening to, pure middle school.

Waiting for the World to Change killed all my interest in John Mayer.

I saw him a few nights ago and my opinion of him as an artist/musician has gone up a level.

He is definitely a good artist to dissect. The girls love him because of the vulnerability in his songwriting and he isn't afraid to let everyone know of his insecurities with anxiety. I would agree to anyone who says there is a softness to his songwriting ability and some would think this is a negative however...

There were 3 guitarists on stage in he was clearly the best one, the other 2 were very good as well. Some of his guitar solos sounded so good and lifted the experience of the night to another level.

I wasn't surprised to see a good mix of people at the concert, male and females and all ages.

He played about 20 songs and everyone of them got some sought of reaction, there was no lull in the setlist and he didn't play 'body is a wonderland' which would be one of his most popular songs.

Find a rich old white dude, and listen to him talk about Eric Clapton's guitar tone for four or five hours. That's basically the John Mayer experience, but marginally less painful, and cheaper.

Weird that I can't stand the dude so much as I love Grateful Dead. Everything about him is pure baby boomer rock though. No one has ever written anything interesting playing gear that's as expensive as the gear he's got.

There are 2 standout albums Heavier Things and Continuum. Both those albums are all terrific songs. Everything else since has been a mixed bag.

That's a strange statement I must say.
