This is the view from Knightmare a pies fan on him who does alot of phantom drafts.

Would be a good get. Could play from round 1.

His story is basically with a loaded midfield - Swan, Pendles, Ball, et el.
Just couldn't get game time through the midfield.
When he played at AFL level generally had to play mostly on a HFF - where he still looked good, but still just not quite inside our best 22, and probably somewhere closer to being our 25th/26th man.

The worry with McCarthy in years gone past has mainly been injuries which have meant that he probably hasn't had the opportunity he probably deserves. 2011 had a pretty injury free season and with it produced some incredible totals through the midfield at VFL level and was consistantly in our best 1-3.

Ball use ok without being great. Wouldn't describe it a standout feature of his game, but none the less generally uses it pretty well and makes the right decisions most of the time - at both AFL + VFL levels so the pace of the next level is no issue.

Also wouldn't describe him as a top flight athlete. But I don't really consider that an issue either. Endurance + work rate is there and isn't slow. Just average.

Is a proven performer who if selected is an immediate type fit into the midfield rotation. Wins the hard ball, accumulates, tackles. Isn't soft and is a type I think Hardwick would like to have in his team.

Good fit for Richmond and late/PSD is a really good option. Could see him fitting into your best 15-20 pretty quickly.

Can someone explain to me how he is going to get more game time through the Tigers midfield. Who is he likely to replace?

Think the Tiges need to play McCarthy in his correct position - That is primarily as a midfielder - can play inside/outside - probably more inside.

Watched him a few times at VFL Level - He was the ' pea in the pod ' -The 'Go-To man', who set up the plays. Unfortunately he was played primarily as a forward for the AFL team in which he struggled.

Richmond will give McCarthy every chance to transfer his VFL form to AFL level.

Would rate Houli higher because he has a better skill set.

I think he will be a decent pick up for a PSD pick in a poor draft. He was pick 31 in 07 and most Pies fans that I have spoken to rate him but suggest he was unlucky with injury and only really played HFF when in the 1s.

Going in and out of a side is not ideal and I think you see the best of a player like McCarthy when he is playing full time in the middle and gets a decent run of 5-6 games.

One of the major issues at Richmond is that our bottom 5 really struggles. McCarthy would be an upgrade on a player like Matt White or imo even Daniel Jackson in the longer term.

At a top 4 club Houli is bottom 1/3 for sure. Not sure many Richmond or Essendon fans would disagree with that. B&F finishes for poor teams can be misleading.

But the key thing is that he is solid and the tigs got him for free.

Fair bit of Bomber bias there I'd say! Houli had a damn good year and likely embarrassed a few people at Windy Hill by walking for nothing!
I think it was the lack of opportunities at Essendon that caused him to look elsewhere and I'm certain he's better than a bunch of your best 22.
As for a poor team, how do you rate your own club given that we did actually beat you through the season! You played finals yet were humbled!!

You need a good seven or eight people rotating through your midfield and he'll be part of that rotation.
Martin is primarily a midfielder but does spend chunck of game up forward where he is equally as damaging. Cotchin too plays forward.

He's OK. I don't think he'll ever be a star but he really didn't get an opportunity to ever cement himself at Collingwood. I think given the opportunity he'll become a solid AFL footballer who can add depth to the Tigers list. Doesn't really have any standout traits but does everything fairly well.

He will be played as a midfielder and will play AFL unlike at collingwood so when weve seen him play a full year in the one's then people will know if he has what it takes and at 22 room to improve Id say.

I would rate us as mediocre as per our 11.5 wins. Feel free to overhype your own teams 8.5 wins though, thats clearly not a poor result. My mistake.

Young side, development year and now transition begins. From what Dimma has said we will be playing the best 22 from now on.

i wouldnt classify your year as mediocre. probably more just above average considering you did play finals.

Remember the Power have a pick in the PSD before the tigers.

So like any draft he has to go to the team who selected - just like every other player.

True but McCarthy has said publicly that he wants to go to the Tigers. Why would a club draft a player when they know he'd rather be elsewhere?

When a player says publicly that he wants to go to a particular club, isn’t that contrary to AFL rules and doesn’t that compromise the draft?

Quite frankly he's a cheap get.

I don't consider him a risk whatsoever, he's free and worth a crack.

Things used to work differently for Richmond in the past, trading for players such as Thompson & McMahon hoping they suddenly became jets and we could win a premiership.

I'll give him a go, Grigg & Houli have been great value for us, especially Houli.

Better player than Houli, hasn't got a pea heart for starters. Durability is his main concern. Will be a good pick up for the Tigers, will play 22 rounds next year fitness providing.
