Everywhere I look I see people saying Meesen will be our key forward next year, and we need to play him in the square. Well let me get one thing straight, he is not the answer to our forward woes and he is not a natural forward so you’re all expecting far too much.

I’ve seen more of him than anyone and I honestly don’t know what you’re expecting from him because you’re all way off the mark. Sure he may be given an opportunity up forward next year, but it wouldn’t be too wise. He was drafted as a ruckman, he has played all his footy as a ruckman, and in his two years for the Redlegs he’s been a ruckman for the majority of the time. He is developing extremely well in the ruck and this season the improvement was clearly visible. He’s a smart player who learns from every outing, has exceptional skills and moves incredibly well for someone his size.

Seeing him play up forward last week for the reserves was interesting, because it became increasingly evident that he is a long way off becoming a key forward. He kicked three goals while playing from the square but still looked a little uncomfortable. When he moved into the ruck in the last 15 minutes, he dominated. Won all the hitouts, fed the on-ballers brilliantly and had half a dozen possessions. He became a massive target around the ground, and in the dying seconds he pushed forward and kicked a goal. You could see in only 15 minutes the difference in his play, he is comfortable as a ruckman and this is where he must be played.

Next year in the absence of Hentshel he will more than likely get a shot as a key forward. However judging by the posters on this board the expectations are that he’ll step up and be the key forward we’re missing. He is a ruckman, that’s where he is comfortable; he is good enough to be the 2nd ruckman next year and we should be looking at him to fill the void of Clarke, not Hentschel.

Agree. During Junior footy he didn't play much up forward as well. If we are looking for a young forward then Gibson (If he gets his body right) should be the best option. Maric can play up forward although I don't recommend it as he isn't that mobile. He's got a good leap though.

Gibson can play forward and back, and although he has performed well at CHF, his best performances have all come in defence. He has terrific speed and can close down on opponents in no time, add this to his tackling and you have a good defender. But as I said he’s also a decent forward as he has the ability to take a pack mark and always provides a contest. Bode would enjoy playing alongside Gibbo; would benefit from the crash and bash style he plays.

At this stage I would be more confident with Gibbo down in defence, as when he plays up forward he tends to be a little slack and will often pick and choose his contests. When he’s playing in defence he has to be more responsible and play more attention to his opponent.

I haven't watched him much so you are probably right. Key forwards this year is a must in the draft... Are we ever going to get a quality key forward that will most likly solve out Problems? We got smashed in the midfield.. by West Coast.. Although no other team in the comp would've stopped them IMO.

Lots of talk about playing Meesen as a tall forward.

What about playing Meesen in the ruck (with Hudson) and Maric as a key forward? From memory he's kicked a few goals for the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL this year.

Also agree that Gibson has to be played in the forward line next year. It's painfully obvious that our current batch of KPPs will never win us a flag - sorry to fans of KMac, Pez and Welsh.

I think all the talk of Meesen as a forward has come from his athleticism. He's very mobile for a bloke his size.

Maric as a key forward could work, apparently he played a bit at FF for the magpies and played his junior as a CHF???
Anyone can back this up??

Meeson missed one from the goalsquare on the weekend  but played fairly well. He is a ruckman though not a key forward, although he has been working on his goalkicking.

Gibbo can play either end, as I said in another thread they finnally have his training programe right after what seems to have been a poor weights programme for him over the last couple of years so I'd say he will be right next year. Hopefully the Crows give him another year but if not I suspect he will stay in the AFL system at another club.

how confident would you having Gibbo in teh backlines of AFC ?

would he be up to the Wok Cup ? I have only seen him a few times this year for norwood and I am not sure if he is quite ready for AFL
