Very good performance from John Meesen tonight. His first half was very good; he collected numerous disposals in the first half and did a lot of running, constantly giving the team an option. Probably had about 4-5 possessions in the first term. He did a massive amount of running in the first quarter especially, dropped back into defence many times. This is probably the most promising aspect of his game, the ability to drop into defence and help out the defenders.

In the second half he didn’t have too many disposals, but his ruckwork was brilliant. Must have rethought his tactics at the half because he certainly came out firing in the ruck. He constantly gave the midfielders an opportunity to get the clearance. However the highlight of the game would've had to be his mark in the third quarter. He ran hard into defensive fifty, and sprinted back near the square to take a hanger. An awesome contested mark of the highest quality. He also took another good diving mark on the wing, showing his athletic ability.

Very good performance from Meesen, again showing signs of what a great future he has. His field play was very good, and his ruckwork was great in the second half. Continues to improve every week.

How many hit outs?
Gosh, well it's hard to say really. It’s hard to determine how many hit outs someone had because it’s difficult to credit actual hit outs. I doubt the number will make you drop dead, but the ones he will be credited for were effective. His first half was probably more recognisable for his work around the ground, but second half more so for the ruckwork. Without going out too much on a limb I would probably say about 15.

I figured after being slammed on here last week you would have taken extra care in assessing his game by hit outs

But kudos to you for being a lot more restrained this week.

Please keep posting your impressions of those SANFL Crows players you see...its a lot more than I do.

Sorry Drum but I didnt think he was that good tonight, O'Hara run of him ALOT and if O'Hara had kicked better would have had two - four goals and for an opposition ruckman that is a bloody lot, Meese took some good grabs fair enough but I thought he got exposed a little tonight for not sticking with the opposing ruckman and when we come to AFL level vs a Dean Cox, Josh Fraser type I would be very concerned......

Well I disagree. Not only did I think he was good, but one gentleman who is usually extremely critical of Meesen said that his performance was very good tonight, and believe me coming from him that is huge. Meesen didn’t always stick directly with his opponent because he was too busy trying to bail out our defence. ;)

Nope, that's it.

Although Aish played in the ressies... ;)

I tell you what he is a pretty large bloke, quite tall, I’d say over 190cm and is pretty well built too. Didn't see much of the reserves so can't comment too much on his game.

OK fair enough each to their own I suppose, I still don't think he dominates a SANFL game like Maric does at this stage

I really think that our expectations of AFC players in the SANFL needs some perspective. I don't think Meeson's effort last night - while acceptable, was anything out of the ordinary.

The reports are great - but lets not give some the ammunition to constantly bay for their inclusion based on a good ordinary SANFL performance. The progress of some is encouraging - but really - they need to be dominating - or at least playing consistant football before they will be looked at.

Maric >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Meeson

MD your correct with your comments but IMO I don't think Drummond is understating the potential of Meesen.

Dangerous comparison of Maric and Meesen - both will be very good players for us ....I do think though Meesen will end up the better ruckman because he has just a few more ruck tricks up his sleeve.....certainly not anywhere near perfected yet but....

Keep thinking that at 198cm, which is not tall for a ruckman, that Maric might end up a KPP.....having said that the AFC have shown no inclination to groom him for such role in the SANFL.
So Iam obviously wrong

Why let perspective get in the way of blowing someones trumpet ? In all seriousness, I agree, it has been proven time and time again that the difference between AFL and SANFL is huge and above average performances in the SANFL, whilst encouraging, isnt enough to really warrant AFL selection.

Nothing wrong with 198cm.

It may not be 'tall' for a ruckman, but it sure isn't 'small' either.

It's the same height as Clarke, Jolly, Allan, Primus.

And taller than Charman, Darcy, Simmonds, White.

Just to name a few...

You say they need to be playing consistent footy before they will be looked at; well that is exactly what Meesen is doing. He has been very solid this year, week after week he puts in good performances. Last year he struggled to adapt to the SANFL however this season he’s improved out of sight. At the beginning of this season he was probably lucky to be in our league side, however two months later he is now our No.1 ruckman and Nicholas now comes off the bench. That is a sign of consistency and the overall improvement of Meesen.

It's about time that Meeson was given a chance, ala Ivan Maric, because Matthew Clarke was COMPREHENSIVELY beaten today by Troy Simmonds who was close to, if not Best-On-Ground.

Can't remember the last time that Clarke ever got a BOG... has he?

on todays performance......

my nana > Clarke.....;)

actually MD at the game Clarke wasn't so bad - he was getting the taps first but Richmond were just swamping us to not allow the clear run away. Biglands was way worse than Clarke and he was the one that was opposed to Simmonds most of the time. Although Stevens on Simmonds in the first quarter was not fun to watch at the game.

Clarke was looking very tired in the last qtr ....this after being rotated off the bench.

The guy is old, is playing with injury so make allowances folks ...but he's still better than Maric and Meesen ATS
