having not seen the movie yet (and with no real intention), I can't give a definitive viewpoint on this, but first impressions are...

YOU ARE A TERRIBLE WILLY WONKA JOHNNY DEPP.

the advertising for this shows Depp's interpretation of the character as nothing short of sinister.

there is only one Willy Wonka, AND IT'S NOT JOHNNY DEPP.

long live Gene Wilder!

I'm seeing it this weekend and its had excellent reviews, I haven't read the book but apparently Depp has put a bit of Michael Jackson in to the role, thats what Margaret and David said on the movie show anyway.

If you read the book you will realise that Willy Wonka is meant to be sinister. The darker side of life is a recurring theme in all of Roald Dahl books from The Witches , where the witches plan to rid the world of children, to George's Marvellous Medicine, where a little boy makes his grandma permanently disappear. I can't wait to see it.

"I haven't seen it, but..."

Having seen an advanced screening I can assure you it is the opposite. Depp is sensational and you connect a lot more with his version - which was the way Dahl originally wanted it - than you did with Wilder's.

And by the way, Depp is the master.

I have seen the 1971 version, many, many, many times (too many? :o)

I was referring to the fact that I have not viewed the Burton remake in full.

having also read the book, first impressions are that Johnny Depp has completely and utterly missed the mark.

You haven't even seen the movie so your thoughts are based on a 2 seconds snippit from here and there... pffttttt...

Having seen the movie I can declare that Johnny Depps interpretation is an improvement on the 'all too mild mannered' Gene Wilder's portrayal... and I am still a fan of the original version.

For more of my thoughts see my post here:Charlie

Well apparently for Depps role as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Carribean he based it on 1 of the Rolling Stone guitarists Keith Richards/Bill Wyman... I forget which one.

Similarly, for Willy Wonka he has used Michael Jackson as a base on which to develop some of the charactor.

I think the hardest thing to improve upon from the first movie would be the children. All five were perfectly cast in the first movie, especially Veruca Salt and Violet Beauregard.

This rumour is rubbish.
Has been categorically denied by Depp and Burton many times.

There is a huge difference: Jackson loves children, Wonka hates them.

Depp said he based his Wonka on children's TV hosts from the 70's when he was growing up.

Cheers...

Fear And Loathing was still his best character though. f'ing ********er of a man.

Roald Dahl would be happy to hear that.

Jack Sparrow was based on Keith Richards, rumour has it that in Pirates 2 Richards makes an appearance as Jacks father

He is one of my favourite actors, he is awesome in nearly every movie i see with him in it.. Blow and Pirates of the Carribean are both awesome... Anyways from what i hear he does an excellent job in this movie and i have seen a review (which gave it 4 stars/5 btw) which said it was a bit like a horror movie for kids as Depp plays Willy Wonka how he is supposed to be played.

I cant really comment as i havent seen the movie, but either have you so i suggest ou take your opinions elsewhere.

Refer to my, "Chaz and the Choco factory" thread in general talk for my opinion.

Cheers,

Dave "What's a PDA?" Jones

As a massive fan of the original, I can't wait to seet his movie. From the previews I have seen I havn't been impressed by Depp as Wonka, but we'll have to wait and see.
