As I've said in other threads I've gone from regarding JON as an absolute nuffy last year to having a 'can't-quite-put-my-finger-on-it-but-there's-something-about-him' feeling this year.
It came to me last night. So far, JON has looked like a young colt, tripping over his own overly-long legs and looking decidedly unco. But he's also looked like someone yet to grow into his body. He is beginning to.
Stay with me...
Phar Lap was an ugly, gangling colt, bought on bloodline potential. Couldn't beat a cart horse as a 2-year-old, and was roundly ridiculed before he finally 'got it' and was unbeatable from 3 onwards.
New draftees are like 2-year-old horses. Once a year one wins the Golden Slipper, the rest of the time trainers are developing them for the future.
By my reckoning, a footballer turns '3' at the age of 21; '4' at 24; '5' at 27; '6' at 30; '7' at 33 etc. You can see that Richo is a Vintage Crop, and we're hoping that in 3 years time he can Super Impose himself on the big stage.
JON turns '3' next year. I'd hate to see him win a Derby racing in someone else's colours. Harry Telford has been riding him up sand dunes, now all he needs is a Tommy Woodcock (David King?) to teach him how to win.
