Toast Jordan Murdoch

It is possible to see Murdoch's upside. I think of Wojinski to some extent when I think Murdoch.

Wojinski always showed dash but was inconsistent in his early years. His kicking at pace was very erratic and decision making questionable at times. Part of the 2007 improvement (a very small part) was Wojinski settling over his kicks and delivering with accuracy. He was given more ball and became more consistent.

Murdoch seems to have hard hands to me. He is not as clean gathering the ball at ground level as others. It is affected by confidence I suspect.
He will improve this aspect with more games, and his confidence to run will improve . He has more upside than Wojinski so I am pleased we are pumping games into him. Could be a special in his 75 -150 games period.

Played quite well at Etihad on the fast track, broke the lines a few times.

Good to see him take the game on and hope he can keep it up. Going to be hard against Freo.

He's been instructed to use his strengths: run, take the game on, burn them off.
He looks better, we look better, when he does. Keep it up.

On the weekend, it felt like the young guys all got a lift from each other playing well, like it was infectious. Duncan, Christensen, Motlop, Guthrie, Caddy, Murdoch.... That's what was the most exciting part.

Great glimpses on the weekend from Murdoch. He's still unsure at times with disposal and needs to improve defensive pressure but plenty to work with.

Just need to get games into him.

With Caddy and Christensen back in the side and rotating thru the forward line it has released Murdoch to play further up the field where he has more space to utilize his main assets in speed and long penetrating kicks.
The team is starting to gel quite nicely

Tend to agree a bit. Wojo was I think faster and more explosive but the advantage Murda has is that he is hitting some really good form and is 22. Wojo really took hold when he was 26-27. Don't get me wrong he showed a lot earlier but if Murda can get the consistency now that bodes REALLY well for the future.

Go Catters
Looks stronger through the hips too than last year. Was able to break through the odd tackle on Sat night with a bit of a shimmy which was good to see. With Murdoch, Varcoe, Motlop and Christensen we now have a fair bit of leg speed in our team.
I was thinking the same about Duncan. Watching him run last night he seems a lot more dense thru the mid section. Will go well his increased MF time too…

The game time with him is paying off.

GO Catters

Noticed in Kelly's post match interview he stated "you don't always know what you will get from Murda"...

It's pretty much on the mark. Still quite inexperienced but that breakaway pace out of congestion is gold.

Hopefully Murda can deliver a bit more of this over the next month or so... it would be handy. :thumbsu:

He definitely needs to keep it up, otherwise he could be on the chopping block.

With McCarthy, Burbury (if he gets back), Smedts, Schroder, Sheringham, Stringer (maybe) the only ones that probably have a chance of pushing him out. I think if McCarthy is a ideal sub

Murdoch is a mile ahead of all those players IMO.

WTF?
Based on what exactly?

Is his brother quick , I wonder if he wants to come on down?;)

Murda has come back into form, always looks much better when he gets rolling. For him to get to the next level he need to work on his over head stuff in preseason. Some guys have an advantage to get games early and Murda had that with pace. Big Sept player ....hopefully

My opinion.
I think he could do a hell of a lot more then what he has done. (except on weekend)
Missing sitters that my grandma could kick doesn't help either.
Think he has a good future with us-but agree re missing sitters. He should be used on the wing all the time using his speed to carry ball down, rather than hanging about forward line going for opportunistic goals. ( that he misses a bit)

Linc is someone who could come in, looked OK early in the year. If he stays fit ..but does he has Murdas pace? Not many do.
Burbs just looks to fragile. Im little bit over these guys that are getting injured so often. Jaw was just bad luck in a way , but too many games missed.

But Stringer & Teddy ? No chance

Smedts... I really don know . I think they may have pulled the wrong reign with him. Most player like George have had to earn it several times over , yet they brought him back very quickly. Did it with Caddy too , but it looks like its coming good.

Schroder, no way. Just not the same type.

The guy you should have mention is Thurlow. If anyone comes in because of his youthful class its him. But really ..Murda is in till he has to be an out thru injury imo. His speed at his size is unique.

agree with Kelly's quote nohairandfair - Murdoch has been a bit enigmatic at times during 37-game career with the Cats.

Was one of those juniors who got some kinda special dispensation to play in the SA u/18 comp as a 19 year old (an 'over-ager') and duly performed well enough to attract notice from recruiters. We took him at #48, before Linc McCarthy and Jed Bews.

I've done a full 360 in my opinion of his value to the team, which not surprisingly has mirrored his form and progress; I thought he looked promising in his debut season, but some worrying aspects to his game started to reveal themselves in 2013; in my opinion he often looked a bit lost, hesitant at the contest, and shaky with ball in hand.
The gap between his serviceable games and his dead-quiet ones was pretty wide, which was a worry.

Thankfully I reckon he's rectified this a great deal this year; he's still not a big possession winner - a combination of inexperience, the position he plays and his role in the team - but he finds ways to stay in the game, particularly through his tackling, which has really impressed me this year - he's seemingly a diffident type of fellow, but he's not shy to lay a crunching tackle when he gets the chance; really wraps them up.

At this stage of his career I find it hard to see just how he'll develop.
His current output is pretty good; as a half-forward flanker you'd hope he'd eventually learn to sniff out a few more goals here and there; 17 from 18 games this year is merely ok.

His value as a marking target is pretty low at this stage; he *can* take a grab; I think he's potentially better overhead than say Steve Johnson, and I've seen him take maybe half a dozen semi-contested F50 marks - I suspect that part of his game has potential for growth; he's a good, rangy height and has a bit of spring. Overall, if he stays in the F50 you'd expect him to focus on crumbing and tackling more than leading and flying for marks, but it would be nice if he could present as a marking target a bit more often. I reckon it'll come.

The long-term question is whether or not Murdoch is able to develop to the point where he can play significant spells as a midfielder (probably specifically as an old-fashioned winger; although his 'inside' game has potential too; he's a strong, big body).
He has the pace, the long left foot kicks; but can he build the endurance, and does he have the nous and capacity to make good decisions regularly?

Anyway, unlike some few I think his 2014 has been very encouraging and I love watching him play when he's on.

If breaks Freo tackles I'll agree with you. Roos did not look like they could handle his pace

I kind of see him as being a rebounding half-back type player, his pace and long kick make him suitable in that role.

He can do both CS, it is actually one of his great strengths as a player. (He needs to become more consistent in both roles but he can fill both roles very well)

With SJ out, I am wondering whether the MC might bring in McCarthy, to have another look, Push Bartel more into the midfield this week, and have murdoch spend more time running it out of defense.

Not saying that will happen, but the mere fact its a possibility is wonderful sign that Chris Scott's obsession with Flexible players is paying dividends.
