russell was 'just' in our best 22 last season.....add judd, stevens, hadley....he will struggle. Be a decent fill in/top up player when we have injuries.

Don't forget Armitidge. ;)

I think he'll have a break-through year as a lead up forward - especially as we no longer have an obvious CHF. He'll compete with Wiggins for this position. Jordan is better equipped (but not as brave) and can also swing through the midfield if required.

Andrew Mackie is a star
just ask mark williams, blokes like mackie win you games

I think he was referring to Mackie because prior to this year he was considered a draft blunder. A first round pick who had athletic qualities but was soft and rarely showed much. He isn't a star but he's learnt to play footy and he's now a valuable part of their team.

Jordan Russell has the potential to do the same, but at the moment he's a favourite fan whipping boy, which is ironic because the one thing he lacks is confidence and it doesn't help when you step out on the ground and both sets of supporters want to see you fail.

I just want someone to get kid, shake him hard, slap him about the face, and then tell him his career is over unless he takes the game head on. Someone needs to give him the hard word that 2008 is his last chance. Plenty of other kids will be pushing for his spot, so its up to him now.

Enough crap. We are the navy blues. The old dark navy blues. We have had such a rich history because we think, work, eat and breathe success. Our kids must believe, fight, commit and do. When a player pulls on the Carlton in 2008 - they must be prepared to bleed for it. If Russell can adopt this mindset, I say we unleash him on the opposition.

If we had picked him up at pick 200 I wouldn't be complaining, but for pick number 9 in the draft if hasn't offered much. Needs to extract a digit or be speared.

Not quite as bad a return as Luke Livingstone at pick number 4 though.

To be honest, i have been a little dissapointed with Jordan considering he has been on our list for some time and was a top 10 pick.
He was drafted as a midfielder, but now that we have great depth there with the likes of Judd, Murphy etc. will not get much of a run there. If he is to become a consistent player for the Blues, then he will need to reinvent himself as a forward or defender, most likely as a forward. I think that he could be a handy player to play as a small forward, like the role that Wiggins plays.
I think that this is a make or break year for Jordan, considering the fact that we don't really need too many midfielders and he is on the fringe of selection.
Probably right on the edge as to whether he is in our best 22 or not.

Jordan Russell is just another example of an AFL club picking an athlete over a footballer. His efforts at U18 level warranted a pick in the 30s yet because of his size and speed he ended up as a top 10 pick. After the top 7 or so that draft was a poor one so he might prove to be a top 10 pick yet if he starts using his speed during matches but at the minute he's shown little to prove that we made the right call.

Russell is on the chopping block for next year if he doesn't pull out a half decent season and string some consistency in his game.

I think he is lucky there is a few more also on the chopping block and under pressure from the recruits and more exposure to the football world next year.

Russell will be joined on the blocks by Saddington, Wiggins, Bannister, Ackland, Blackwell, Hartlett and my man Bentick if they aren't performing, need a big year from 3-4 of these blokes as middle-tier players to even consider a push at the finals.

I agree. But if it's a lack of confidence in himself holding him back, this approach may not be the best.

People management skills are a huge challenge at any club and I'm hoping Ratts can tweak the right strings for a few of the lads.

I really like Russell. If he can improve that extra bit this year that will be required to stay in the 22, he will be a handy player. He needs to play forward, he found himself in that game against Collingwood. He should aim to kick a goal a game and set up one or two as a Ryan O'Keefe style HFF.

Ryan O'Keefe - Jordan Russell, your having a laugh mate.... One is an All Australian. premiership player... the other is a poorly skilled, one paced plodder who needs to be boned.......

Can't see him getting a game this year barring injuries... Isn't a stong enough mark to play as a lead up forward and I think we'll have better options as running defenders...

Will make a good wingman for the Bullants though!

Never said he was as good, just thought he should model his game on his. If he was half as good as ROK tis year I'd be very impressed.

I thought russell had a few good games as a lead up forward towards the mid to late year. just my opinion mayb?
He seems to get lost in the middle, think his suited as either a tagger on the quicker forwards down back or that forward leading option up forward.
Personally i think he'll always be a fringe player, agree with the above posts he's an athlete still learning the game, but still way to early to chop him, plenty of improvement left in him.
