Welcome to Carlton.

Blues welcome three draftees
Bootsma is a rebounding defender with good closing speed and a long penetrating kick. He is a team-oriented player who spoils well.

He tested extremely well at the NAB AFL Draft Combine at Etihad Stadium with a time of 2.98 seconds in the 20 metre sprint and 10.40 in the 3km time trial.

Bootsma: “I’m a hard running player and I believe my strengths are marking, spoiling and kicking.”

The AFL’s National Talent & International Talent Manager, Kevin Sheehan, has declared Bootsma’s one-grab marking and precision kicking as his x-factor.

Draft: what the Blues say
Pick 22: Josh Bootsma, South Fremantle
Hughes says: "He didn't come into the WAFL system until about halfway through the year. He was living in Albany and had his apprenticeship transferred up to Perth, before he starred at South Fremantle. He finished a very good player and played in the premiership team."

Both North Melbourne and Sydney sent officials over to speak to Bootsma before last month's draft combine in Melbourne.

Bootsma began the year in Albany before heading north to play 13 games with South Fremantle's premiership-winning colts side, averaging 12 disposals, four marks and a couple of tackles a game to be named this week in AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan's top 30 prospects for the draft.

Despite the attention, Bootsma, who labelled his defensive pressure as a key strength, said he was more worried about simply playing good football.

"That's great, to know that you're being talked about in the top 30 players, but that really doesn't matter to me,'' he said.

"Just getting out on the field and playing the best footy that I can pushes me to go further, to be a better player.

"Moving up here halfway through the year and this coming at me was a bit of a surprise really, but I'll just take it as it comes."

South fremantle Football Operations Manager Brent Dawkins described Josh before the Draft.
"Josh is (former Docker) Brad Bootsma's son and he joined us half way through the year from Albany after he got an electrical apprenticeship. Played league footy for North Albany for the past two years under his dad as coach. He slotted into defence with us really well and has great closing speed. I hate to compare but he's a bit Dustin Fletcher-like long arms, great spoiler. He's very skinny at the moment but that will change."

Blues stocks get a Bootsma
Asked to best illustrate his attributes as a player that he is, Bootsma responded: “Hitting the packs hard, spoiling well and providing run off half-back.”

Carlton’s National Recruiting Manager Wayne Hughes rated Bootsma as “potentially a running midfielder”.

“Josh came to our attention at South Fremantle Colts. He’s a quick, running player with good skills and a right footer.

“He’s a development player, he’s hardly scratched the surface, and didn’t play in Perth until Round 11.

Seen as a long-term development prospect given the strength of Carlton’s current list, Bootsma - “player 212178” as called by Hughes - was the subject of much interest from rival clubs Fremantle, North Melbourne and Sydney.

Recruiters from both North and Sydney held discussions with Bootsma prior to last month's draft combine in Melbourne.

The Dockers had queried whether they could secure Bootsma under the father/son rule, given that Brad also represented South Fremantle in 163 senior WAFL matches. But the league ruled that the father had not played enough games in total.

Three training sessions in and this kid is not out of place amongst the boys, other than for strength which is hardly surprising.
I can also see why we had some early comparisons to Fletcher, as he just has that unlikely burst of speed to be upon you before you're aware of it.
Caught up to some seniors today and threw them off their kick when they least expected an interception.

Bootsma certainly has the courage to contest and kicks well either foot, doesn't shy away from the physical stuff and stretches for marks you think unreachable at first.

Early days for sure, but I've been very impressed with his efforts to date.
He hasn't the body to be a player in 2012, but watch out after that.

He said Josh Bootsma had also been very impressive and would not be surprised if he played senior football in 2012.

“He (Bootsma) ran down Chris Yarran at training the other day and not many people do that. He is only slight but he has been very impressive and I would not be surprised to see him play next year,” Ratten said as the players completed their final session for 2011.

Great wingspan and frame.

He does have a bit of fletch about him doesnt he harks! I think its those long spidery arms that do it for me.

Hope they have got him hitting the weights hard this preseason, obviously will be hard to get a game this year, but he has a nice frame to bulk up on and maybe he might get a few games in 2013.

Just quietly the interview TheGeneral posted, Mitch looks huge next to him... just looks like he has huge shoulders and hard as a rock..

Does anyone know if they have given Bootsma a nickname yet?

Easily one of, if not the best spoiler at the club already.

Only very slight in frame but just seems to get to every contest and get the spoil in. Completely blanketed Cornelius who had been dangerous in the 3 games leading up to last night with 9 goals.

Very good signs. A real positive on a night where there weren't too many - even though it was a practice match.

We know his skills to be to a high standard but that's the one area that he has struggled with at AFL level. Is rushing his disposal rather than taking his time and assessing his options, resulting in the ball more often than not making a poor connection with the boot. Having seen what he can do with it I'm comfortable in stating it's not a technical issue so expect that to improve with more experience as he becomes more comfortable at senior level.

Can seriously play and I expect him to feature at AFL level in 2013. Perhaps not as a regular but I have little doubt that he will get games in the senior side and deservedly so.

Had a terrible game last Friday night - his spoiling was 'ok', but his lack of awareness and rushing his kicks (creating turnovers).

Given it was his first game of the pre-season, It's natural he would be rusty - but I hope this game doesn't linger on in his mind and put a downer on his confidence ..... like a former first round draft pick of ours.

he'll get there...just needs to adjust to the speed of the game. has shown what we hope he'll become in the VFL where he's afforded more time.

Defensively, consider me seriously impressed. Several more senior team mates could really learn from him in that area. Or perhaps he's just an extreme natural.

Disposal...yes, he causes either the ball to fall short or over-shoot or just a general hot-potato... but considering what everyone knows him to be capable of it must simply be an adjustment thing due to the speed of AFL level. He'll get there.

Poor bastard. Felt like he was personally involved in every Brisbane goal for a while there.

But being a skinny young kid chucked in for your first game against a side that were playing seriously good footy, that would be tough. He's a long-term prospect, and there's plenty to like.

I've been watching Josh closely in recent weeks and he just seems a little lost right now.

Has done a good negating job on his direct opponent and that punch-away has been the real highlight but his positioning around the ground needs serious work.
Josh just doesn't know where he should be when playing as a loose man. Spends some time looking around seemingly for others' direction.

Again, it's showing up that Josh has a clear directive but for now is just finding himself a little unsure of how to go about it. Early days.

Once McInnes comes in and plays third tall, is there any chance that Boots will move up the ground?

Talking long term and not this season. Hard to see him getting a crack with Walker, Tuohy, Simpson, White and McInnes playing back. Looks more comfortable up around the wings with his long kicks inside 50 and intercepts with his reach. Better than his one on one play as a defender. Boots has been caught ball watching when he should be locking down on his man. Tad hesitant as a defender when he should be moving it on like Watson.

I've seen that since day one with him, but many I talk to don't agree.

I think the wing will suit him once he gets up to speed, which would make him a pretty tough match-up with his height, speed, reach and kicking penetration.

I think there is every chance that we will see this eventuate down the track. Was mentioned by the club as a possibility when he was initially drafted.

Has a beautiful long kick which could turn into a real weapon when played off a wing.

Josh BOOTSma's first goal

Love his hands and reach for his height. Appears to have superior reach than Walker who is roughly the same height. Will outmark opponents if he's opposed to players of a similar height. Needs to work on his decision making and kicking like Walker. And add around 30 kgs of muscle. :)

On the Spot with Josh Bootsma

Since making his debut in round six 2012, Josh Bootsma has fast become a Carlton fan favourite.
The 19-year-old, who has plenty of run, is frequently greeted with a spirited "Booottsss" by fans when heads out on the field.
And while he's fast on-field, off-field Bootsma likes to go even faster, enjoying mountain biking and movies about fast cars.
We caught with Josh Bootsma and put him On The Spot.
