Reserves Wrap - NT Thunder - 15/08/2015 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

A mixed bag from Clayto. Much better offensively for us this week. He used the ball better, didn’t put himself into situations where he turned the footy over. Again his offensive patterns as a defender were really good. His GPS results were outstanding again which has been one of his strengths this year. Probably more defensively this week Clayto let himself down. He had a role on a player and didn’t play it enough throughout the day in regard to stoppage positioning and a few defensive elements certainly killed his game in that area. Just needs to probably get the thought process a little bit more defensive first, then start to attack.

Player Reviews: Part Four

19-year-old Josh Clayton began his first year of development for the Lions by playing for the Reserves in the NEAFL. His versatility was his greatest asset throughout the season, taking up a number of roles around the ground as the Club attempted to deal with the growing injury list. A hard runner (his GPS results were a consistent strength) Clayton used the season to improve his decision-making skills and positioning on opponents. Looking forward to 2016, Clayton will be searching for senior selection.

Interesting that we've given him a contract extension - has he shown something that I've missed? o_O
With half his Dad's guts and determination, he is a chance. Maroon and blue in his veins, and really wants to play for us. Desire,is there. His understanding of the operations of a forward line, are excellent. Bolton's interview today, is very interesting on this aspect.

Same question from me. Nit bagging him out but has he earnt this? Maybe those who watch the NEAFL could answer

I think as long as the young guys are willing to work hard, they'll always earn themselves an extra year or two. It's the lazy unprofessional ones who often find themselves on the scrapheap after their first contract.

Reserves Wrap - Southport - 05/03/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Josh played as a high forward with Reuben William. He started the game really well. He kicked the first goal through his smash in pressure and ability to intercept that got us up and about early. We want him to focus more on ground balls inside 50 and his ability to get in and out of the congestion. A big focus going forward for these high forwards is the ability to get their high speed and GPS running up and apply tackling pressure in the forward 50. Josh will be focusing on that in the next few weeks.

"Josh played as a high forward with Reuben William." Josh and Reuben had some fun with Billy Puller before the game did they?

If he has half the determination and team spirit of his dad he has a future.

Clayton played as a high forward. He missed some opportunities to convert in front of goal. He could’ve kicked three or four for the day. He’ll continue to work with his patterning and his ability to find uncontested marks inside forward 50 and not being the key forward. We want him crumbing goals. Hopefully next week he’ll hit the scoreboard more.

Reserves Wrap - Aspley Hornets - 23/04/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Josh played as a small back again. He was probably not as efficient with the ball as in previous weeks – he didn’t find as much of it, only the two contested possessions. He needs to be using his good run to get some handball receives and work off half back. A big focus for Josh is a couple of defensive aspects of his game, learning to hit opponents, particularly as a small back and not give your small forwards any opportunities. He only had one rebound 50 so we’ll look to get Josh’s run up and going. He’ll have some big tasks this week against Sydney.

Reserves Wrap - Sydney Swans - 01/04/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Played on Rose and wanted the job on Rose. It was good for a kid to be able to put his hand up and want to play on a dangerous player. He was OK on him, a couple of contests where Josh wasn’t involved Rose had impact and a couple of ground level balls in the back 50 where if you give a good player room they’ll take you to the sword. It was a good improvement from Josh, taking the role on the half back line really well and buying into it. Now we really want to see him take the game on with his run and carry because that is his strength, his ability to run.

Reserves Wrap - Sydney Uni - 14/05/16 (Shane Woewodin's comments)

Again a different role. We pushed Clayto back forward again this week. Hopefully the past month has been a great learning curve for him down back. We played him as a high forward, he didn’t hit the scoreboard but certainly improved in some aspects of his game. His GPS and his ability to run and work, he topped the game with high speed metres which was fantastic. He pushed the footy inside 50 six times, laid three tackles and won a couple of clearances in his role in what he did up and around stoppage. It was an improved performance.

Reserves Wrap - GWS - 17/07/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments?)

Probably his best game for the Club, we thought. His contested footy numbers outweighed his uncontested numbers. It’s a big focus he’s been working on. He’s still got some tidy ups to work on with his kicking – in terms of just more quick kicks and that awareness of how much time you’ve got but certainly to go with his 28, five tackles, six clearances, four tackles. It was a great result for Josh, playing as an inside mid too. He’s certainly developing his game and playing against some bigger bodies.

Reserves Wrap - Aspley - 30/07/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Josh was our highest possession winner as an inside mid with a little bit of time spent up forward. He had his 30 disposals, his 6 tackles, 6 clearances. His contested stuff he’s working really hard on in his game is really improving and it’s good to get him in and around traffic and around the bigger bodies, which he’s not used to. He generally plays as a high forward but he’s certainly learning a bit about the role at a NEAFL level and he found plenty of the footy. Hopefully he can continue his form.

Reserves Wrap - Sydney - 06/08/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Again played as an inside mid. He’s consistently finding the footy week in, week out now. I think it was Josh’s hightest tackles for the year. He may have had 8-10 for the game, 6 clearances and also hit the scoreboard. We’re seeing a lot better signs with Josh in and around his contested game and his ability to impact in and around the contest which is good to see.
