Toast Josh Dunkley

So if I make a thread about trading Bont I would be not boring, and therefore a good poster?

Igloo makes good points. Bont and Morris are the only two players which comes to mind which we haven't dropped. In about round 4 everyone thought Dunkley was developing great. He's going through a form slump. Perspective!
We wrote these plans. Took the order. The architecture.

A player gets played in different positions week in week out and supporters are calling for him to be traded?

He was out most of last year with a shoulder injury - bulked up a bit over the summer and is being tried in different positions. But I do understand. On that note - lets throw English at FF when he's back and if he cant kick a back of goals week in week out, lets trade him too.

A player doesnt just wake up and decide to play a different position - perhaps the MC has more questions to answer on team selections and Bev on his position moves.

I think 21 year olds should be allowed to lose form and get dropped without it being the end of their career.

.
Has he bulked up too much? I know he's never been a greyhound, but he seems awfully slow this season.

He was more mobile/athletic carrying less weight IMO.

Form slump, nothing more. PLaying dumb football because he is aware of how shit his form is and panic is starting to set in. The worm will turn.
This is a very good point. Kid seems to be freaking out about his form slump so is looking for low pressure easy ball and messing up. Going back to VFL will help immensely.

Us V collingwood rd 21 2016 on fox footy right now.

Dunkley contesting every centre bounce and is playing a blinder in his first season. He is everywhere, contested animal. He is purely being played out of position this and last year.

Caleb Daniel is playing midfield/wing and is setting our forwards up nicely. He is currently being played out of position.

One player in the forward 50 dunkley could be helping cover is clay smith. He is one player we have missed in there with his tackling pressure.

People forgetting the purpose of this thread and why I started it. Bag me all you want, but I originally threw up Dunkley’s name as I believe he has genuine currency. Dahlhaus’ name has been thrown up in talks, and Roughead etc.. players out of contract. I stated Dunkley, as I believe our club always plays it ‘safe’ not trading hard enough for any real guns in the league. Who have we brought in over the last 10 years or so from another club, who has been a real great pick up apart from Tom Boyd?

Are we meant to have some kind of telepathy to uncover this hidden meaning of the thread?
"Sorry guys, I don’t see it. Time to trade. Discuss." is a little bit different to that. That's just potting a player who you apparently don't like with a low effort, no explanation thread. So it received the derision it deserved.

The question remains though. Why would you put a few years of development into a promising kid, where in the games he hasn't played AFL, all but a few have been missed through injury? He doesn't have the currency to get a gun from another club. If we traded him, it'd be at a loss or a sideways trade with negligible benefit, or just a hit and hope in the draft.
He's a 21 year old premiership player who has had to sacrifice what is his natural game to help out the team where we've needed a bit of a fill in. That's not someone who sits atop the pile of "players to get rid of".

So if you think he should be traded, sure thing, but go to the effort of putting some reasoning behind your opinion.

I for one forgot how impressive dunkley was as an inside midfielder. I am starting to believe that we are actually OK for personnel in that area, just we are playing them in other areas due to necessity because of injuries and crappy list management

You’re right. And I apologise for not being more in-depth with my original post. I still think we have value with a lot of our players as they might not all be A-graders, but ‘premiership player’ adds a bit of value. I just think we need to start being more ruthless at the trade table. A point a lot of our fans have shared over the last few years.

I called for Dunkley to be dropped in a different thread. I'm glad he was.

But that's just because I think long term he's going to be a midfielder, and we can probably get more out of a different player in the forward line right now while Dunkley gets to get in touch as a mid at VFL level. Do I think he should be traded?

Nah. He's probably a valuable part of the future, particularly with regards to where the league is trending. His lack of speed hurts, but the midfield is evolving to the point where the aim is to almost get as many 190cm+ marking mids as possible. Perfect world, Dunks and Jong would both be good enough to be able to play as mids at AFL level regularly and we'd have 4 tall marking mids. Jong is probably never going to be that good. Dunks has shown enough to suggest that he could be.

He is clearly out of form at the minute but is also not being played in his best position - as an inside mid. Due to team needs he has spent a lot of time up forward where he hasn't excelled. His major asset as a forward being his above average contested marking ability for his size. Big surprise he had a poor game in the monsoon last week and has paid a heavy price. I would like to seem him played on the ball more at AFL level and I am sure he will be part of the rotation as time goes on.
On the other hand, Essendon need big inside mids - maybe we could could trade him for one of their forwards flankers as we seem to need them. That kid Stringer seems like he has potential...

Been handled perfectly in the past few weeks - was given a run with role to learn from the best and he's risen to the occasion.

Still developing, certainly has time on his side.

Did a cracking job on Robbie Gray on the weekend, which is almost as hard a run-with assignment as there currently is. He's also getting plenty of the ball to complement his outstanding defensive work.

Robbie gray spent 90percent of the game up forward. Don’t think Dunkley was near him much.

That being said he’s much improved. Still think his disposal and speed are issues and in our one paced midfield I don’t particularly rate him as best 22. But he’s stepped up and the tagger role has been good for him.
