Josh Dyson info:

Josh Dyson is a fast on-baller who loves the contest. He is good by foot, especially over a longer distance, and has a good awareness of how the game plays out. This allows him to have the ability to push forward for some goals.

Josh Dyson spent 2009 playing for the Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup and managed to play 18 games. He had somewhat of a purple patch during May and June this year, kicking 7 goals in four matches which isn’t a bad effort for a midfielder. It is possibly this attribute that could see Josh Dyson play more of a small forward role until his fitness gets up a bit.

Josh Dyson loves to run the ball and likens himself to Nick Dal Santo with this regard. His ability to run could be the deciding factor for his selection given how many teams follow the run and carry style of play these days.

In his own words
What type of player are you?
A quick on-baller who is skilful, hard at the contest, courageous and has good footy smarts.

Which AFL player do you most resemble and why?
Nick Dal Santo - ability to run, high possession rate, good reader of the play, good skills by hand or foot and also a good leader.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
My speed, kicking and marking ability, my hardness and my footy smarts (ability to read the play).

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
I would like to improve my fitness. Although it is good it can be improved. Also my kicking on my opposite side of my body.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
I barrack for Richmond. I basically didn’t have any other choice as all of my Dad’s family are die-hard supporters.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far and why?
My biggest influence would be my Dad. He has been there for my whole football career, supporting and encouraging me through the tough times and the good times.

Brisbane head recruiter Graeme Hadley

"He's a beautiful left foot mid. He's more offensively orientated, in that he'll invariably add to the scoreboard. He's a lovely clean ball handler and has got extreme pace, which we were certainly looking for, but it's not always available. So we're very lucky.

"I suppose we just thought he really grew as a boy. He's come on so much as a lad he was added to the Eastern [Ranges] leadership group and about mid season he really played as a leader, as a very responsible leader. And when you're drafting or rookie-ing lads, you're looking beyond just the footballer. You're looking for a package.

"Those leadership traits really clinched the deal for us in terms of his value, because we weren't convinced prior to that."

Pick 25: North Melbourne – Josh Dyson
Height: 181cm - Weight: 69kg - DOB: 18 years old
Club: Eastern Ranges (VIC)
North get a quick skinny kid with a lot of potential who will take a while but should make the cut for AFL, and I would not be surprised if he was elevated after 2 years. I have not seen much of him but from what I have seen and heard he is very quick and can break the lines, his top pace is very good, and he is also quite agile and elusive and despite his frame he is hard to tackle. His kicking is surprisingly good and he can hit most targets over 50m with excellent penetration, they travel quickly and flat. At this stage he plays outside, but he does have an inside game although he will need to significantly bulk up or else risk being pushed around. A long term prospect but a good one.

Pick 59 - Carlton - Joshua Dyson (Eastern Ranges) - 181.4cm - 69.2kg - 12/08/91

Bit of a disadvantage with this pick because of the late lodgements. There were a couple that i had in mind here, Matthew Scott and Sam Shaw but i think this fella would add a little more to our list. Got a bit of time for Dyson and seemingly a bit of time for Ranges players.

Josh is another quick midfielder, the three selected adds plenty of pace to the Blues outfit. He is little lightly framed at this stage but this does not stop him from putting his body on the line. Courageous player that works both ways on the field, both effective in attack and willing to lay tackles and chase. He has a lovely left boot, able to weight passes of many distances and ability to kick goals from the midfield is a feature (22 goals in 18 games). He seems to have plenty of footy smarts as his ability to read the ball is impressive either at stoppages or out in space. Overhead he is very impressive for a fella his height. Didn't test very well with regards to his leap at the Victorian State Screening but was injured and didn't complete most of the tests so can probably scrap those results. Will back back and put his body on the line and his hands are very good. Averaged 20 touches and 5 marks during the TAC Cup competition and finished 3rd in the Ranges B&F.

As i said, he is a little lightly framed but a few pre-seasons and he'd be good to go. He is very left sided, rarely uses his right and when he does it isn't the greatest sight. Kicking skills are effective but probably lacks a little penetration over a distances. A little like Jetta, can kick 50 but it takes a little while to get there. By his own admission he thinks his fitness needs work though it doesn't seem that bad.

Fair bit of room for improvement in this fella, there could be a sense of thinking someone that is quick and lightly frame he'd be solely and outside midfielder, though considering his ability to read the play and willingness to attack the footy he could become and inside/outside midfield once he puts on muscle. Can play across half forward so can provide another avenue for goal if need be. Speed is something we could use and this fella skillset should add to our list.

Comparisons, well i think this fella resembles Kade Simpson a fair bit. Able to take the play on with his speed, good overhead and basically purely left side gives the similarities some merit i think.

15 Carlton Josh Dyson / Eastern Ranges / 181 / 69

Light kid who was in the mix for a late selection by Collingwood in the ND. Loads of potential and will be one to watch. Just looks like an AFL player – beautifully balanced, penetrating kick, can play a bit taller because of his leap and really good pace.

Other Players that I rate:

Josh Dyson /Eastern Ranges/ 181cm / 69kg.
Josh is a guy that I think has the potential to be a solid AFL player with a bit of development and i’d be ecstatic if North took him with 41 or 53. He’s a super quick and skilful midfielder that has reasonable decision making skills. He wins enough of the pill (he often tapers off in the final quarter because I believe his endurance may not be up to scratch) and his body is relatively under-developed. However, that doesn’t stop him from going hard at the contest- which is rather commendable.
His right foot (his weak foot) has produced a few shockers, and admittedly so has his left foot- but there’s no problems with his kicking action so hopefully it can be ironed out.
I think he’ll thrive in an AFL system and he’s one of my favourites, and was vindicated for a great year with the Ranges with a TAC Cup team of the year spot.

For the record Dyson was one 12 players who was on Port's permission to train list. And Burgan predicted he would go at 19 in the rookie draft to the Western Bulldogs.

Dyson, a goal-kicking midfielder, will travel to Brisbane to play under Brownlow medallist Michael Voss. The tall left footer is good overhead and has an excellent kick over all distances.
"It's a great representation for Eastern Ranges football to have these kids going through the system," Parkin said. "Now we'll keep working to help the next crop of talent make the grade."

Nice little highlights package. Composed in traffic, reads the play, clean hands & finishes well. Well worth a punt. Good recruiting.

I didn't realise this at first, but that was just a highlights package from one game, and there are another 16 clips from different games underneath, all on Josh Dyson.

Just watched a couple more. Good pickup. Works really hard on his defensive game, which is a good sign. Impressive site.

This is especially for one very proud dad that I briefly sat next to at Manuka

Mr Johnstone: "I'm so proud of my little Trav... he put so much work into that beard!"

Seriously though... like the look of Dyson. As a sub, he didn't get much of a chance to show his wares on Sunday but he looks exceptionally focused at training and he is a very good kick of the footy.

McRae is confident the Brisbane forward line can kick enough goals to beat the home side. "I'd like to think Josh Dyson will be one of those..."

Murray Davis (NT Coach)

"And Josh Dyson might only be 19, but he looks a very clever and elusive player."
