I'm with marty on this one, defenders far too often get the blame for losses even when the midfield and forward line are putting in disgraceful performances.

It does, you just need it spelled out to you dummy.

What is worst?
1 - A player avoids a contest, realistic result = maybe 1 goal gets given up.
2 - A player gets reported 4 times misses 10-11 games = MAJOR hole in team structure for half the season.

Which is looked upon a worst circumstance in the culture of the game?? Player 1 who pulled out of a contest!! It shouldn't be, but it is. This is wrong.

+ Players give up 50m penalties, which result in goals? Who cares right?? Mouthing off or belting a guy is tough, yeah?

Yep Mooney was an idiot for allowing that to happen, no arguments from me on that one, and yes it did have a bigger effect on the team then someone pulling out of a contest, but could you explain to me how Mooney getting reported has any bearing whatsoever or whether Hunt has a habit of waving the white flag in aerial contests because I'm damned if I can see the connection, but then again I'm just a dummy who has trouble grasping the brilliance of your arguments.

If you'd like to start another debate about what has the more serious consequences then I'd be happy to oblige, but as I've already stated, Mooneys actions have nothing to do with what's under discussion here, although I will admit it's a cunning way of attempting to deflect heat off Josh.

Have you ever played football? Players aren't robots my friend. Footballers are professionals who may lose a career as a result of suffering a serious injury. You'll notice that the hard heads (Archer, J.Brown, Rooke, Pickett, Waters etc..) surely aren't the brightest blokes getting around.

Having the courage to put your body on the line has absolutely nothing to do with being a hard head, James Hird was probably one of the most courageous footballers to ever play the game and I don't think anybody would suggest he wasn't very bright.

Anyway I can see where you're coming from now, and it certainly is a unique perspective, according to your reasoning players who have the courage to put their bodies on the line have no regard for the team because of the consequences if they get injured, while those who put self preservation first and foremost are doing the team thing by making sure they don't get hurt.

I can also see why you admire Josh so much, because although you're aware of his weakness in that one area, by your standards he's doing exactly the right thing by preserving himself, which I guess to your way of thinking makes a bloke like Harley an idiot who has no consideration for team structure.

Bewildering line of thinking to put it mildly.

Top post.

The argument you are countering just beggars belief. I'll back Josh Hunt in most circumstances but if he is pulling out of marking contests then there is no question that it is the wrong thing to do in a team game - especially when there 17 other blokes out on the field who wouldn't do the same.

It's a bad habit and I am not sure what the cause of it is, because he's pretty hard at it in other situations. I can't follow the logic of it being the right thing to do. Shame on all the other blokes who put their body on the line, really!

Time for a reality check... players do it EVERY single game. No doubt that the team thing to do would be go for every contest and put yourself on the line... point is, subconsciously every player pulls out at some stage. Its uncontrollable.

Its easy for us to sit back and judge from the stands...

Cattery - My point on Mooney is clear. I'm talking about 2 instances (being reported / avoiding a contest), which can have detrimental effects on a team. Being reported is OBVIOUSLY more severe to a team, but isn't seen as severe by the average fan as avoiding a contest.... I'm not trying to deflect anything, just making a point at how blown up this is. Its was one bloody contest for christ sake... If you still can't see my point then you either a 13yr old, or you need to re-enroll at your nearest school. :(

Yep I realise it happens more often then many realise, the point though is that not many do it continually, a very highly regarded West Coast player is one who comes to mind who I've seen do it on several occasions but there are probably others as well, and I'm not "judging" Hunt, just pointing out a fact of his game that he would be better without, and despite which I still regard him as being in our best twenty two.

Also there's a huge difference between accepting that it happens and saying that it's the right thing to to, which you've been suggesting, and which I, and Copernicus as well apparently, find staggering.

And I fully understand your point about Mooney, matter of fact I addressed it in the very beginning of my last response and even agreed with your assessment regarding the effect on the team, but have to point out again [ for the last time ] we're not discussing what's more detrimental to the team but whether Hunt has a tendency to drop the head in aerial duels; let's put it another way, if this thread was about Mooney getting reported and the consequences that flowed from that, would it be germane for me/anyone to drag Hunt into the discussion, as I certainly don't think it would.

You say it was just the one time, but that's where we differ, it's been more then the one occasion IMO, only the one time where it was so glaring admittedly, but there have been a number of instances never the less.

If you still can't see my point then you either a 13yr old, :(

Geez I wish, been a lot of water flowed under the bridge since I was a teenager. ;)
