We've always had a lack of quality small defenders so he's always got a game. Most of our goals are coming from opposition small forwards so it'd be nice if we found a couple of players to shut them down.

I'd get some games into Guthrie now and finals that last spot has to go to Milburn. I don't see what Hunt is offering that Milburn can't.

Enright might to play a more defensive role on a real gun small.

Hunt's been a loyal foot soldier but he is close to the end.

I know it's a whole team effort that wins and losers us games but Josh hunt would almost single handily lost us both games in the last 2 weeks... each clanger cost us a goal then the mouthing off the umps in the bombers game is a 50m penalty which is a goal... Game has gone past him..

Do we have any youngsters that can play his role?

Oh and under pressure how many time has he kicked it strait to an opisition? Supposed to be a good penetrating kick but is terrible under pressure...

I think CS had a look at Menzel down back in the first half Friday night didn't work.

Getting a bit late in the season to try and pick one out of his ars now.

Josh,Mackie, milburn,Wojo and T.Hunt will fight out the last two spots on the back line I'd expect.

I really hope Chris looks to start getting the team settled soon...

Hunt was the one that fell out the back when everyone was on board earlier in the year and Scott was not rotating. He more than likely will be again leading into the finals once we settle on a side.

A great long kick. That is about it. He chokes far too often under pressure situations to be relied upon in finals. He needs to be replaced.

Unfortunately his knee injury has really impacted his massive roast of the footy. He would struggle to kick beyond 60 metres on a consistent basis now.
I always worry when we have Ling, Milburn, Ottens and Hunt starting games. But in a final you just can't buy experience (well you probably can buy it these days) but Hunt's size and experience will be very important in finals this year around. Knowing the back 6 is fully healthy should also boost confidence.

Hunt is a bit of a dilemma-if he plays well he is certainly an asset to the team. The game up here last year against Swans i went to -he kicked a beautiful 60 metre goal off about 2 steps -effortless -never going to miss
Its when he tries to get cute with the short stuff where he lets the team down .
Its interesting some supporters want Milburn Christtenson types in the team -to me all they are honest -your not going to beat Collingwood with those type of players .

To me Hunt (kicking) Wojo (run ) and Varcoe (bursts of brillance) are the type of players in form that are needed to have any chance against Pies,

Hunt and Varcoe were dissappointing on Friday night but i would still take the punt with them in September.

The problem with JHunt is that he has the lowest football IQ in the whole of the AFL. Time after time, he makes stupid, frustrating, team deflating clangers and often under no pressure. With pressure applied to him, he is horrible and chokes more than Greg Norman.

His ongoing issue has always been getting turned around by small forwards when they get up the ground and back, he has no pace off the turn around, possibly made worse since his knee.

currently in ordinary form and really making crap decisions with the ball coming out of the back line.

I often wonder how he would go as a defensive forward option?! he could be an asset around the 50m + mark with his long kicking and would absolutley attract a decent defender, he can tackle quite well and would give a good physical contest at ground level.

I'm sure there are reasons they dont play him there though?!

I recall arguing with some clown before the season who lambasted me for not having Hunt in my hypothetical best 22. He asserted that Hunt had a good record on small defenders and is the best kick in the team... or something like that. Can`t remember the poster`s name.

Hunt just lacks class and footy nous. That`s about all there is to it. Being able to kick the pill 60m with accuracy at training is irrelevant.

His physical presence +

Kicking +

Speed against smaller opponents -

Decision making under pressure - -

Maybe at some point in time. Now, every time he takes a kick out or tries to spot up a target in the back half, I'm praying he doesn't put it straight down the throat of an opponent, as it seems to be happening constantly.

At the moment, all I can see from Josh Hunt is that he is getting beaten by his direct opponent and getting goals kicked against him, is too slow to play on most small defenders or generate any run from down back and his supposed lethal kicking has only been lethal for us when he gives it to the opposition.

I don't really know if the occasional hard tackle is worth all the negatives he is bring. We do seem to have plenty of defenders and with Milburn coming in, can probably drop one. I know he's taller, but Milburn would still probably be more effective than Hunt has been this season.

Frankly the biggest use Josh has to the team right now, and the only thing keeping him in IMO, is that the coaches don't want to curb Enright's run by making him play a more defensive role on a small, which he would probably have to do if Josh was left out for finals. If we had more ready options as legit small defenders I doubt he'd be in the side. Time will tell whether that pragmatism keeps him in, it might.

Ah, yes. Any of them. Guthrie, Taylor Hunt, Gillies off the top of my head. They'll make mistakes but they'll learn from them and improve. Hunt is not going to get any better and is rapidly becoming a liability.

In my opinion this is one of the great myths in football. Simply not true now. The style might look nice but the result isn't.

You were watching the finals series last year right?

Experience is great, but you can't have the same players without any youth at all, and simple attrition dictates that some senior players will not play finals this year. Whether it's Milburn or Mooney or Josh Hunt or whomever. Can't afford to be sentimental about it, not if they want to win finals (which is far from certain).

I think Hunt keeps his place because 90% of the games he plays he shuts down his opponent and generally plays well. In those other 10% though he usually fails and fails pretty spectacularly.

Replacing him...the coaching staff have pretty clearly bought into the squad idea that the Pies have been using, and fair enough, but I still think there's a pretty clear gap between the best 26 or so and the rest. Watching the VFL last week and GHS and Guthrie are still a way off being able to play seniors week in, week out.
