How disappointing was Josh Hunt last night?

He didn't lay any tackles all night, and then, when he did, it was a late tackle, that resulted in a free kick, and gave Collingwood the game.

Also, Hunt refused to kick long last night, and stuffed up most of his short-kicks. It was a lazy and pitiful effort by J. Hunt.

Also, I have noticed that he can get the ball when he plays in defense and marks in front, but if the ball goes over his head, 9/10 times his opponent is able to get the ball first, so he is hopeless getting to the contest if he doesn't outmark his opponent.

Maybe if this spud spent more time on his game, and less lifting weights and getting tattoos, he may be more effective for the team, and if he is not in the VFL next week, I will be surprised.

How this forum can be amusing at times.

Sometimes he's a god, and then the following week he should be dropped.

Seriously, this is why I think roasts are a waste of time. Everyone saw the game.

Players like Hunt, West, Smedts, all looked like they need a week off. A few players seemed to hit the wall. Nothing we can do about it, and I'm sure they are even more pissed about it than we are.

I've never been a massive fan of his.

Sure, he has a cool long kick, and when it goes from kick-out to the mid-field, it is highly effective, but Josh Hunt proved again last night that he is a one-trick pony.

I guess it is just less obvious when he is playing in a brilliant team. We're not that anymore, so he gets exposed.

Hit the wall? It's Round 8!!!! If they are have hit the wall now, then we are stuffed for the other 2/3rds of the season then.

The biggest thing was J. Hunt's lack of effort last night. He should be showing the young guys how to tackle. Instead, he just ran around, looking like he was doing something.

West is a second-string ruckman. He may be good down forward or back, but he is a spud as a ruckman, and is a foot shorter than most other ruckman. He is better relieving in the ruck, and giving the No.1 a rest, like he did so well with Brad Ottens last year. Hopefully, Orren Stephensen can assume the No. 1 ruck role, and be our "Ottens".

Smedts is a kid, so I may give him a pass. However, Guthrie (despite last night), Motlop and even Stringer are ahead of him in their readiness to adapt to senior football. Just because we used an Ablett pick on him, doesn't make him play like Ablett.

Are you related to VEEDUBS? HTFU seriously. We are thereabouts and last night if anything was a clear indicator of our ability to improve on what we've dished up this year.

I started the "Should Josh Hunt play in the midfield?" thread and it was a result of his first game for the year making me feel like he is just one of those players that give you a little bit of confidence and help you relax when watching the game. Maybe he makes a few mistakes - what players don't - but he has the strength and brute force that some of our juniors lack which seems to be a common problem highlighted in peoples reviews. So let's not sacrifice more strength and experience after a down game.

PS, someone also indicated they thought he could have been injured based on the short kicking so let's see if that proves to be the case.

Hunt looked like he played injured. The clue should be he could not kick long.

Smedts played virtually no VFL before coming into the seniors. I think he has played well up until last night, but he needs to be back in the VFL.

West has rucked tirelessly this season and looked like he needed a break. You try doing it as a lone hand for 8 weeks and tell me about it.

Motlop is very skilled, but still too light and avoids contact. Varcoe in for Motlop when the going gets tough.

It's exactly the opposite with me, heart in mouth time when he has the pill, especially when under any sort of pressure.

We can put up with bad games [ and boy was his bad ] what we shouldn't accept though is his propensity to drop the head, should get dropped on the back of that first quarter effort alone.

Hunt did something that seemed brain-numblingly dumb. He marked went back for his kick, then hesitated and handpassed it to nobody over his opponent's head. I think he was frustrated that nobody came in for the short pass. He just could not kick long last night. I'm pretty sure he was carrying an injury.

But lets roast him anyway!

How disappointing was Josh Hunt last night?

He didn't lay any tackles all night, and then, when he did, it was a late tackle, that resulted in a free kick, and gave Collingwood the game.

He laid 4 tackles. The most of any non-midfielder (behind Kelly, Selwood, Corey, Bartel and Duncan).

Also, Hunt refused to kick long last night, and stuffed up most of his short-kicks. It was a lazy and pitiful effort by J. Hunt.

Hunt had the highest kick:handball ratio of any player on the team (11:4) yet had the highest disposal efficiency of all players (87%).
13/15 disposals were effective with one those ineffective disposals being the shot after the 3/4 time siren from 60m.
He is only behind Gillies (3 games) and Scarlett (4 games) for DE% this season.

I remember similar sentiment after a game last year criticising his disposal only to look at the statistics and see that he was at 100% for that game.

Sure he made mistakes but don't make up statistics that simply aren't there to suit your anti-Hunt agenda.

Geez we have a funny lot.. one thread we whinge about getting seniors back and we can't keep playing kids..

The next thread is about dropping them all...I think there is at least 1 post about every senior to get dropped...

Look we had a chance to win... had we converted we could have been a decent way in front..so much that Josh Hunt incident wouldn't have mattered.. Then he wouldn't be singled out and roasted..

Josh made a couple of errors last night but his positives always outweigh his negatives and he is a very important part of our backline.

FWIW I thought the late 50m penalty was terrible - Fasolo clearly played on. Hunt should not be victimized for it.

The trouble is that Josh has a habit of these things.
All players are there to be scrutinised. The good and the bad.

He makes mistakes when under the pump.
Perhaps if fit, he should be tried in the midfield for grunt.

Josh Hunt was clearly poor last night, and when he has a bad game it tends to be a very bad game.

If he is injured then he needs to be rested to get himself right - also, *if* he is injured, why was he calling for Jimmy to dish off to him outside 50

If he isn't injured, we need him sharp and in-form as quickly as possible; he is a senior player, should be in the prime of his career or thereabouts - when he is in form he is a great touch player, provides plenty of drive and is great to watch.

Doesn't need to change a whole lot, just work on eliminating the silly mistakes as much as possible - mistakes/errors of judgement happen all the time in footy, every single player is culpable - the good players do it rarely, but still do it.

The rule is that until the umpire calls play on, it is not play on. Therefore, Hunt tackling Fasolo before he heard the umpire called play on was a stupid mistake that cost us a chance at the game. The umpire made the correct decision under the rules, and Hunt should know better. His fault.

Maybe you think the rule is terrible, which would be fair enough. It is.

What about his post denotes genetic linkage to me?

BTW, I am in agreement with you about Josh Hunt, and about our chances this year. Did you not read the other threads? Just because I think we would struggle v Dogs at Etihad, does not mean we cant make the 8, if making the 8 is all that critical this year. Maybe there are some who believe that this is one of those years that a team can win it from outside the top 4. We just have to get our best team on the park at some stage this year, given that we are pretty close to flag faves Hawks and Pies already this year with a very depleted line-up, I dont think we are that far away. But I'm not picking us yet to beat quick teams at Etihad until we have an appropriate array of our quicks back and firing.

About Josh, I have already said I have always rated him, and suggested preseason he could be a dangerous mid with his Kelvin Matthews type attributes. Or forward.

Because you're overly pessimistic. To a point where you hardly rate the team you follow a chance in just about every game.

Under your theory, based on the current environment in the AFL, if we can't beat WBD, we may as well pack up for the year because we will sure struggle against far greater opposition.

50 was there. Hunt had 2 hands around him. He might have gotten away with just one

The dropped mark was a howler

And yes he must have been injured. The biggest clue was how he was looking to pass the ball off for his end of quarter shot even after the siren had sounded!!

That and the tattoo is also a clue that he isn't the brightest kid down at KP

I saw first hand NM deal with us, then saw Dogs embarrass NM, and you are underestimating their ability to play that ground better than CURRENT Geelong. I still see us top 8, but coming from 4-5. As I said, there could be a very fatigued Dogs team coming from Darwin, which would help.

I did suggest we would struggle big time in the first half of this season, and we are ahead of my "predictions", which wont surprise you at all, but there are reasonable reasons for my thoughts this year. Other years, no you are correct. But I maintain that we are incomplete and struggling without Wojo, TV, Menzel , Scarlett, Bundyand Bartel/Kelly/Selwood have not played as many games together as in previous years. Isn't it great you are such an optimistic supporter though. AND, I agree with you, our efforts v Pies/ Hawks with all those absentees is very meritorious, and we are close to the mark.Other teams have lifted, ESS, CROWS, and we are yet to play ESS, Swans, WCE, Blues who are meant to be better than Dogs.

Hunt lacks pace and that's getting him caught out when trying to play these younger quicker mid-sized players.
He's never been a good aerialist either so his best asset is to be the sweeper and use that penetrating kick to get the rebound out of defensive 50.

I think we sorely lack speed in the backline and wouldn't mind seeing Hunt dropped for Wojcinski or Varcoe when they are fit and ready to return.

No side is pefect - they all have champions and their weaker links.

For me JHunt and Stokes are our weakest links re experienced players.

They are not bad players but are not champions either.

I think both will probably be there at the end of the season - but may struggle to get a game in a season or two if the yougsters we rate come thru.
