I agree STK would be crazy not to go hard if they have a chance to lure Kelly. But STK also have a young list and their will be casualties from their list if they offer one player $1m - $1.5m pa as a number of their improving young players are probably due a good pay rise now. Would be hard to play in a team where Carlisle, Kelly, etc. are bought in for top $ and everyone else has to accept unders.
Saints are in an interesting position - they almost have an embarrasment of riches - lots of cap space, 2 first rounders and likely a reasonable 2nd round.

They could abviously make a big play for Kelly and I understand Kelly is close to a few players at Saints. But equally they may choose to look at an FA, use one 1st Rounder in the draft and trade one 1st rounder for another 1st rounder in 2018 - supposedly shaping as a super draft year.

That would give us,
  • an FA,
  • a 1st round pick in 2017
  • 2 1st rounders in 2018

versus Josh Kelly (who would probably take 2 first rounders and a pot of money) and one 1st rounder in 2018.

funny isnt it....? when north made the reprted offer in feb, everyone thought "josh kelly, really that much"
now we have him as top 5 player in the league, to be the biggest paid player.

north in 2013 scrambled the whole way through the trade period to get pick 2 from Melbourne, but ultimately they gave it to GWS fir the players they got in return.

north have been trying to get Josh since then (yes Gws re signed him, at the end of his first season for a further 2 years).

it will be a very interesting trade period if jk, dusty, fyfe etc havent signed by then.
So North have always been desperate to get him? He has always been desperate to play for North? Why did he sign for a further 2 years with GWS at the end of his first year??

or if he categorically says i want to go to north (or whereever) only, will gws take a first and second, or will they play hardball, and let him walk to the psd? these are all things no-one knows till the time it gets to their.

there are alot of people saying he should stay for two years, win flags then come back to Vic, but premierships arnt guaranteed, and if he has a o'meara type injury, will get paid no where near whats on offer (by nth or stk).
the other thing people are also suggesting is he would have a heap of pressure on him if he was to leave.....Hes been playing prett well with the pressure on him currently.

GWS have been holding off signing others, waiting fir a decision.....guess what, their have been a few signings of late, so JK will either sign very soon, or hes gone.
We signed three youngsters this week, but from what I've told their payments wont affect the 18 cap as they're first year rookies. So you argument may hold as the cap next year might be the issue.
Smith is the big signing but he's said he wants to sign.Hopper and Matt Kennedy as second year rookies as well.
Their will inevitably be posturing around the deal for Kelly as both clubs seek the best outcome.

The whole StKilda thing is a GWS spawned, media complied ruse.

they re signed him after one year, on quite a lot more than the initial contract. maybe he was happy with the extra two years of security?

you are kidding yourself if you think north havent been trying to trade for him, since well b4 being drafted.

you signed them up for quite a bit more coin, to keep them there, and to make it harder for other clubs to sniff around. just like north did with Jy simkin
GWS has been re-contracting players in there first year for a while now....

hopper and kennedy aint rookies either.

What were we going to offer them in the 2014 draft in exchange for Josh anyway?

Pick 16 & 25?

GWS have already offloaded 2 of their 3 top 10 draft picks from that draft, so they clearly didn't rate it that highly.

Josh re-signed because a trade was not remotely viable in 2014.

You had a list of 45 players on top of your draft picks mate, if it was going to be a chance you could have quote easily made it happen.

Yep we did. But they are still paid the rookie contract until end of year 2.
Same thing happened to Boyd.

It was not a pressing priority at that stage.

North had just traded in Higgins & Waite following the trading for Dal Santo the previous year. Our focus was fixed firmly and immediately on the premiership cup

Are you sure it is STK being used?
Unwittingly, yes.

They have the coin and they have the picks. They are going to be the prime target for trades, from a club and manager perspective.

North are also in this category but to a much lesser extent due to our relative trade currency and mostly due to the fact that we have come out on the front foot very early in the piece with our targets. Targets that would basically exhaust our cap space and remove us from further gossip mongering.

I feel for St Kilda fans. Before the year is out they are going to have to deal with their club being associated with every Tom, Dick & Harry that owns a pair of footy boots, and 99% of the crap will originate from opposition clubs & player managers.

Would North risk trading poorly and letting him go to say the Lion's through PSD?
I will preface this with reasserting I have no doubt whatsoever that in no way would North (or Saints at that) jeopardise a future trading relationship with the Giants and that a fair deal would get done but I've always been intrigued by the argument of the risk of letting Kelly (or any player of that quality) go to x club in the PSD. This is a bit of a special deal, it would be terminally risky for any club that didn't have an agreement with Kelly to just have a million plus over a long time frame just sitting there available once trade week is finished, especially with minimums to be hit. I can't think of any club that can afford to do that.

Hense why either side wont screw it.

Giants wont bend over (nor should they)and the Roos wont give over everything.

Wow you seem incredibly insecure over this, you'd hope he goes to North, I don't want to imagine what you'd be like if he doesn't. The stuff you're saying would fit in well in a Sean Spicer statement.

media complied?

That's awesome

You're history suggests that you are gullible, but I would be surprised if even you weren't aware that there are media/agent/club agenda plants for information/scoop swaps with footy journos.

The likes of Caroline Wilson have basically made a career out of this sort of thing.

they are not rookies.....they get there first contract paid yes, and the following years, they get the increase, yes, but contracting them now, allows you to try and keep them, or make other teams pay overs, if they want to leave.....
again, they are not rookies. rookies get way less than a first year player....

How do you make that assumption?

Every intuitive receptor in my brain has Kelly going to North.

If my intuition ends up being out of whack then it's out of whack. I'm confident with my position.

what that they are not rookies? look at your list, it will tell you they are not rookies.
or is it that they are getting more coin? why would a player re sign for the same as they got in their first two years, for their next two?
or the tactic of signing them in their first year to keep them? thats a tactic most, if not all clubs use to keep the good youngsters on their list, and to also have bargining power if they request a trade (you know cause they are contracted!)
