Big difference there being that WB's offer to him absolutely blew everyone else's offer to him out of the water though. In terms of both length of contract and the amount per year.Tom Boyd would 100% disagree.
We for instance were apparently having or preparing to have a big crack at him, yet our offer was apparently only $750K PA. Making WB's offer 33% more PA, AND presumably for at least two more years!
Is North's offer to Kelly 33% higher PA than the next best AND for at least a couple more years? Very, very highly unlikely. If it is though, you'll probably land him for sure!
Another big advantage WB had over other teams was that it all happened so quickly and while he was contracted.
This time around other clubs have had months to get their minds around how much it's likely to take to land Kelly though, because you guys put your cards on the table very early on and it became public. Lots of time for clubs to have the necessary board meetings and so-on to authorise monster counter-offers.
WB also had the fact GWS wanted Griffen as leverage that other clubs didn't have. No other club was likely to be able to entice GWS to trade Boyd that year, as he was still contracted, so that was another reason for Boyd to take the opportunity to go there.
It got him home a year earlier than he likely would have otherwise and it got him a monster contract. Plus they had serious elite young talent already on their books in Bontempelli, Liberatore, Stringer and Macrae.
The circumstances this time around are very different because:
A: Kelly is uncontracted
B: Most of the main offers to Kelly are probably in the same ballpark per year.
C: It's unlikely that any of the clubs in the race for Kelly have a disgruntled captain that wants to join GWS and who GWS want.
