A certain Garlett who is now languishing in Dandaragan after being drafted by Hawthorn is a case in point.

However, as a cautionary tale, being born a dickhead transcends skin colour.
I wonder what Josh actually thinks of Sonson. Did they make that connection. Walters going out to the media to reinforce his career brings security speech suggested he was trying to appeal to get this reinforced by anybody that Josh would listen to.

I hope and think he will come back.

One of the players told a training watcher that he left a meeting to take a phone call from his partner the other day.

Don't forget the milk?

Honestly....I hope he comes back stronger and ready á la Walters. Good luck to the boy. Doubt he could have a better support mechanism behind him.

I wonder where he will be located for this program. Will he remain in the metro area, or will he return home? I imagine a combination of both. Whilst I won't pretend to be any kind of an expert on his affairs, it must be so tough to feel that you are living such a dual existence. Ultimately, any successful program will in a way need to provide him with the resiliency required to thrive in two different - and sometimes conflicting - realities. And that is just very superficially considering cultural differences, without digging in to the idiosyncratic facets of Josh's personal life.

In any case, if it does turn out that he doesn't make it - and I hope this is not the case - it will not be due to the club's processes or lack thereof. I think he is very lucky that it is Freo that he is at. I became an even more passionate supporter when hearing Lyon openly discuss the cultural difficulties encountered by players who are drafted from Aboriginal communities.
If there's one thin sliver of silver lining to all this it's that the programme we're putting in place will hopefully provide a valuable learning experience for the club that it can use not only for draftees from different cultural backgrounds within Australia, such as Josh's, but others such as international draftees.

It's the sort of valuable IP that Collingwood would be developing and which other less wealthier clubs have tried, and failed to implement (e.g., Bulldogs with Zeph Skinner).

In other words, if you get dealt lemons, make lemonade.

(Edit: Not saying Josh is a lemon!)

You're saying Josh is a lemonade?

Little doubt that there is a connection, but as explained earlier, the cultural, mob and skin group differences wouldn't make it deep and meaningful.

The problem with a lot of people that Josh currently listens to is that they are after whatever they can get out of Josh and, strictly speaking, (but not necessarily), he must obey their wishes.

He is being manipulated badly and hopefully this process will give him a way out of this situation.

Great post brother.

Hopefully this can be a turning point for the whole AFL.

You only had to look at the lack of indigenous players at some clubs during indigenous round to realise that some clubs are blatantly refusing to take the risk on young players of that ilk. It's surprising and disappointing. If more clubs were willing to pitch in and recognise the issue and make more effort I'm sure in time it would be beneficial for all involved. Sometimes there is no simple solution so to see Freo consciously address something like this makes me proud to be a Freo member. Kudos to the club.

I think I've missed that particular evolutionary development of man and technology by about ten years. Thank god.
You see, I was going to like this, quote it, and proclaim that I consider myself as lucky as you. Then I remembered my 7 and 4 year old daughters who will have to battle with our technological 'progress' (while I ironically rely on a form of this progress to write this message)...

I don't think Walters and Simpson are really that comparable, apart from being Aboriginal.

Walters grew up in the city (well, Midvale) and was a cocky/confident kind of player when he was banished. Completely different mindset to a shy and reserved kid from the middle of nowhere.

I hope I'm wrong, but I really doubt we'll see Simpson play another game for Freo. Being a professional footballer isn't for everyone.

It's OK if a girl actually asks to see it though isn't it..I mean like not a picture or anything???

It's much safer if you stick to live performances only.

Snapchat isn't as temporary as some people think it is.

I'll leave that for you to decide - after all, you're the one having to deal with mandarins during the working week;)

I thought they were Cantonese?

Don't want to write off him or the program the Dockers have implemented for him, but it hard to see this ending well at the moment. He needs to find some worthwhile personal goals and sustainable motivation to be an AFL footballer.

Pre-equalisation announcement I would have been in full agreement. Good for the individual, good for communities, good for football.

Now I feel that whatever we build we keep, the rest can GAGF :mad::mad:*

*Will probably let go of this after a glass or two of tawny port ... but until then .:mad::mad:..

I hear ya mate.

don't let it go.

I think that is being a little negative considering the pro-active nature of this "intervention"....yeah, I know.

The boy hasn't cracked and belted anyone or got in trouble with the coppers. He's just struggling with everyday life and a mob of leeches who won't leave him alone and influence his thinking.

The club is throwing the kitchen sink at this and it is far from being over imo.

I think a lot of his issues are around motivation though. He's a good kid, loves football at the raw level, he just hasn't shown that he's ready to commit to the prerequisites of what our club expects. Nothing wrong with that really, but it's hard to find motivation in job that gives you money and power where money and power are probably not as important to him. I am a pessimist though, it makes you happier when things work out for the better.

Yep. But the motivation is being sucked out of him by others, and he is culturally bound, (kinda), to obey, if you know what I mean.

The kid lives for football, but a whole other world is bleeding him dry emotionally.

at least he's not sending pictures of his doodle to a minor while his girlfriend is packing her hospital bag.
Is that true though? I've read elsewhere she was 18.

Now that you've clarified for us the genre of issue Josh is facing, I don't see how it's humanly possible to overcome that kind of pressure, even with the best will in the world on Josh's part and no matter how staunch his resolve. :(

Yes, I know what you mean. He's in an awful place right now.

That's the essence of the problem though SND. He sacrifice would be to his identity, his culture, to turn away all the freeloaders.
