Has anyone gotten into Joy Division before?

He wasn't a 'druggie'.

He never liked himself, his epilepsy was getting worse, especially when performing (strobe lights), and he had cheated on his wife, which he felt guilty about. From what I've learned.

Joy Division were much darker than New Order. Joy Division may possibly be more influential than New Order too.

Both rule.

I agree. Even though the guy from New Order ain't the world's best singer (and neither was Curtis for that matter) they fit in prefectly with what they are doing. Joy Division was one of the most influential bands of their time.

and New Order performed at the BDO 2 years ago? and the teenie boppers thought they were a cool new band. :)

I saw New Order at the Metro a couple of years ago and I loved seeing the guys live. Hooky's guitar riffs with the bass guitar were awesome, Stephen Morris on drums and Bernard Sumner fluffing the lyrics even with an auto-cue (must have taken too many drugs in the 80's) were great.

Great to see them play some Joy Division stuff too. I'm starting to appreciate it more being a New Order fan.

A history of the Manchester music scene from the late 70's post-punk era to the 1980's is reasonably well covered in a movie called 24-Hour Party People, with the live and times of Joy Division, Happy Mondays and New Order all featured.

When the Hottest 100 started years ago, it wasn't based on the current years songs, it was just favourite songs of all time. The first 2 years Love Will Tear Us Apart came no.1 and came second in 1991 to Nirvana - SLTS.

I'd never heard of them until then.

During the 1980s, Love Will Tear Us Apart consistently finished in the top 3 (and #1 a few times) when John Peel did his Festive Fifty Polls.

Go and buy Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Still, and Substance - that'll cover pretty much everything they did. You won't regret it. There was also a Joy Division boxed set that was released several years ago - you should still be able to get it if you look hard enough.

after Curtis hung himself the 3 remaining members formed New Order

A year or so after Curtis's death, New Order were setting up for a gig and someone asked them, "Where's the singer?", to which either Hook or Sumner replied, "Hanging around in the kitchen".

True story.

They also joked about it in "The New Order Story" where they said they talked Curtis into killing himself to improve their profile, and they were surprised when he took their advice.

I saw New Order play in '87 at Festering Hall. Cattletruck were the support - anyone else remember them?

Anyway, Bizarre Love Triangle had put them back in view of the public and that resulted in an interesting mix of people in the crowd. There were the punks/goths/black wearing arty types and the teenyboppers who had jumped onto B.L.T.

In the meantime, how long before the Unknown Pleasures t-shirt becomes the next cool item on sale at Dangerfield?

JB HI have the best of "Substance" for $10 on CD. Buy it! It's the best $10 you'll ever spend then go home and play "Transmission" REALLY loud.

Blue Monday was the highest ever selling 12 incher of all time.

Johnny Holmes came second :p

Boom tish!

New Order lost money on Blue Monday. The cost of producing the sleeves was higher than what they charged for the record! Good old Factory Records - they never did give a sh*t about cost accounting.

I found the box set at HMV a couple of months ago, so it is still available.

All right... so i went to Jb and got Joy Divison, Still.
I didnt take to it straight away but i havent given it the chance it deserves yet.
Is Still one of the better albums?

In a word No. "Still" wasn't even a proper Joy Division album. It was released in the late 80's and made up of bits and pieces that hadn't been released previously.
As I suggested earlier try "Substance" (JB in the city have it at $10 and I assume the suburban outlets do to) which is a best of (for want of a better expression). Stuff like "love will tear us apart", "Transmission", "Warsaw", "She's lost control" and "Atmosphere"(possibly the most beautiful song ever written).
Don't you Collingwood supporters ever do as you are told? :p :D

I was there. ******** I'd forgotten about Cattletruck the most abused and heckled band I've ever seen.

"She's Lost Control" has got to be one of my all time favorite film clips. I cannot stop laughing every time I see it. Look out for it on Rage - often appears on a Saturday night depending on who the guest programmer is.

Do you laugh at other epileptic people too? ;)

Have to admit....I do do an impression of him dancing when I'm ********ed.... :)

Another good 'best-of' is Permanent. It has both versions of LWTUA, the poppy faster one and the more well known slightly slower one.
