I guess i feel the same with Blue Monday (Original 12" version) being my all time fave N.O track, it is quite tough though and would probably change from week to week.

Same for me - the original is my favourite.

5. Round & Round (One of their more pop moments, but a track i can never get sick of)

They played that at the Festering Hole gig - I think they may have even opened with it. It was a booming and ferocious song - just jaw droppingly brilliant.

I just did a search on google and found the tracklisting on www.worldinmotion.net/neworder. The New Order tracks on Salvation are Salvation Theme, Touched By The Hand of God, Let's Go, Sputnik, and Skullcrusher.

I'm not sure if you can get it on CD. My copy is the original vinyl version.

Ah, this will be very tough. Like any top 10 list, I'll have a different set of songs in a week's time. The only thing that is set is that Temptation (the original 12" version, not the re-recorded versions found on the compilations) is my favourite New Order song.

Have you seen the Taras Shevchenko video? It was a New Order gig in New York in 1981 and they played a very early version of "Temptation".

Speaking of films and music, do remember all those John Hughes films in the 80s (Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles etc.)? He would always put together really good soundtracks with bands like New Order, Echo And The Bunnymen, The Smiths and so on.

Haven`t seen that video , but it is interesting the amount of different versions that are floating around of a lot of thier stuff . There is a very early version of Temptation that is on the "Retro" box set that came out last year . Have you got that ? If you haven`t , get in the car right now and head down to your nearest JB and pick it up . 4 CD`s , one is a pretty much straight out Greatest hits . One is a devoted fans picks , a lot of more obscure album tracks , the third is all re-mixes and the forth is a live CD . Best 88 bucks i have spent in many a year .

Agreed ! Great soundtracks on all those movies . Psychadellic Furs and Simple Minds as well . What did you think of the way they used those Tears for Fears songs on the Donnie Darko sountrack ......? Absolutly F...ing brilliant IMO. Reminded me quite a bit of that era

Regarding Love Vigilantes ......... i have often spent time wondering " Just what is it about New Order that i like so much" because it is something that is very hard to put a finger on , one reason is the way Hook uses his base , love all his work , but i think the number one thing is the emotion that comes through thier work . Love Vigilantes is a classic example of it . I think a lot of it has to do with Bernards voice as well , they just have a chemistry that works , i said it earlier but to be completly off the scene for over a decade and come back with an album like Get Ready that is so strong , i can`t think of a better comeback . It was made even more credible because IMO , it was not just a re-hashing of thier old sounds but a real progression , rock the shack would have to be the heaviest guitar laden song they have ever done ....... a real credit to them , I`m just hoping they release another album of original stuff .... any word ?

I didn't get Retro because I've got pretty much everything there, but after checking on the net, I got the impression that the Temptation in the boxed set was the version found on "Substance".

I think the excellence of New Order (and Joy Division for that matter) lies in the band members not really giving a f*ck what the rest of the music world was doing or what it wanted from them. Every album has been a progression. Of course, there is the risk of losing fans (and I'll admit that I've bought their last couple of albums more to obligation than anything else), but they've picked up new ones along the way.

Also, someone posted earlier in this thread saying that New Order were going to release some new stuff this year.

Anyway, I'm going to put Low-life in the CD player now.

Ive got that gig on the New Order DVD 316 which also features the Reading Festival Gig in '98.

There is also a newish live DVD out NEW ORDER 511 which features the Finsbury Park gig in 2002 where they played quite a few Joy Division songs such as Transmission, She's Lost Control, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Ceremony, Atmosphere and Digital.

My New Order top 10.
1. Temptation 7'-summed up exactly where I was.
2. Ceremony 7'-Different to the 12, in much the same way as LWTUA 7/12 differed. In any case, its playlisted for my funeral.
3. Everything's gone Green-Their earliest nod to Blue Monday.
4. Leave me alone-A simple tune that just haunted me.
5. Sunrise-Raw energy. I hadn't heard them that angry before, only darkish.
6. Your silent face-Just classic Barney.
7. The Perfect Kiss (Original 12)-Still stands up today. Perhaps my favourite arrangement of any song I've heard.
8. Thieves like us-The bassline gave me an inclination to like Hot Chocolate ("If its good enough for Hooky...!").
9. Round & Round-Masterful.
10. Love Vigilantes-Such a strong opening track. To this day I can't decide whether Age of consent is stronger.

In general I see all of their tunes as #1's (with some minor exceptions). They all deserve a spot.

I followed the band from '82. I still listen to all the early stuff. My description of their early work covers everything up to PCL. I'm almost inclined to include Blue Monday in the early work category, chiefly because the music was derived from themes they'd released earlier eg Everything's gone green, and 586, which was written some considerable time prior to PCL (available as a Peel session track).

PCL/Lowlife are my two favourite albums ever. I thought it was their greatest time musically. Two fantastic albums, accompanied by excellent single releases. You also get Confusion and Thieves like us, along with some other oddities from that time as well. The band knew EXACTLY who they were by the time Lowlife was released, and the music reflected that they were able to generate more than just doom&gloom or novelty disco tunes for the summer.

The Brotherhood phase was probably my least favourite. While I still enjoyed the music they were releasing around that time, I saw them go from being seminal cult darlings (despite their commercial successes) to Yuppie/teen flavour of the month virtually overnight, and I felt the music reflect that back to me. As a die-hard fan, I was deeply resentful. In truth, I felt it just after Lowlife but it never caught on to that degree-they retained their edge.

Technique restored my faith in them. A brilliant album with sophisticated music. I thought it should have been their "Closer". I likened it to a former lover coming back into your life briefly to show you how much they'd grown without you, and then disappearing as quickly, leaving you with the void (real Chick-Flick stuff).

I haven't purchased any of their releases since.

No other band has put me into that state of fan frenzy like New Order, with the exceptions being Killing Joke and Big Black (for entirely different reasons).

I would strongly recommend picking up Retro , if only for the book that is in there , has interviews with all members talking about songwriting and how particular songs came about etc. etc. and some great photo`s . Great collectors item IMO

I was watching a music channel today and they had the top 100 songs of the 80s. Love Will Tear Us Apart was no.2 Money for Nothing(Dire Straits) was no.1.

This has gnawed at my brain for years ,

In the Bizarre Love triangle filmclip , in the middle of it it cuts to clip of about 5 seconds where an asian girl quite angrily says that she does not believe in reincarnation because she refuses to come back as a bug or a rabbit ( i think ) and a guy with complete disdain says "your a real "up "person " and then the camera zooms in on the face of a third female ...... resume videoclip ...........WTF?

I have tried to work out what it is about and where it came from with little luck for 15 years now .

The song being called "Bizarre Love Triangle" it is pretty safe to assume that the three in the "clip" are some sort of love triangle but what is the clips origins ? Have they grabbed a piece out of a movie or is it something they did themselves ?

I sure would sleep a lot better at night if this riddle was solved . The likes of shinboner and the legend are probably sitting there going "DERRRRRRRRRR" at the minute but you will have to excuse my ignorance

Interested to see how many New Order songs featured in their top 300, and you wouldn't believe it....was Blue Monday there? no, how about Bizarre Love Triangle? nope, True Faith, Temptation, Perfect Kiss? Not 1 New Order song could make their top 300 songs of the 80's! Amazing.

Speaking of New Order. Remember that scene in 24 Hour Party People where New Order/Joy Division are rehearsing (for the first time I think) after Ian Curtis' death and playing a really "guitary" version of "Blue Monday". I would love to get a copy of that version. It sounded awesome.

Yes, and i'm pretty sure the Andrea Mix was also remixed by Jam & Spoon.

They were included on the bonus disc on the "Rest Of" CD which included 8 different mixes of Blue Monday.
