I've got no idea. I always got the impression that it was made specially for the clip.

Yeah i caught a bit of that today on Music Max, just looked up their website and it's actually the top 300 songs of the 80's.

Interested to see how many New Order songs featured in their top 300, and you wouldn't believe it....was Blue Monday there? no, how about Bizarre Love Triangle? nope, True Faith, Temptation, Perfect Kiss? Not 1 New Order song could make their top 300 songs of the 80's! Amazing.

yep - it was a shocker of a list

John Farnham's "You're the Voice" no.4? Give me a break

Eurythmics "Right By Your Side" was no. 13 or thereabouts. I love Eurythmics and that personally is my favourite song. But they have a of songs, "Would I Lie To You", "Sweet Dreams", "Thorn In My Side" that charted a lot better.

And where the hell was "Heaven(Must Be There)"? - top 50 minimum. That song was huge in 1984 and to this day one of my favourite 80s songs.

The liner notes say it was recorded in 1982 and released on the original 12 inch version . the sound is a lot more stripped back and raw , almost "demo" quality compared with the version we all know the best .

I would strongly recommend picking up Retro , if only for the book that is in there , has interviews with all members talking about songwriting and how particular songs came about etc. etc. and some great photo`s . Great collectors item IMO

I went to JB Hi-Fi yesterday afternoon after work and I bought a copy of Retro. I immediately went to my car, ripped open the packaging, and put on Temptation - I got that same feeling that smokers get when they have their first cigarette after a long period of being forced not to smoke.

It was much rawer than what I remember - maybe that's something to do with the CD format compared to vinyl. But it was bliss, f*cking bliss.

Cheers mate for setting me straight on the version used on Retro - I owe you a drink. On the other hand, I've got a New Order bootleg live CD called "Seduction", so I'd be happy to burn you a copy and send it off to you.

Yep ! and it keeps on going .....

This has gnawed at my brain for years ,

In the Bizarre Love triangle filmclip , in the middle of it it cuts to clip of about 5 seconds where an asian girl quite angrily says that she does not believe in reincarnation because she refuses to come back as a bug or a rabbit ( i think ) and a guy with complete disdain says "your a real "up "person " and then the camera zooms in on the face of a third female ...... resume videoclip ...........WTF?

I have tried to work out what it is about and where it came from with little luck for 15 years now .

The song being called "Bizarre Love Triangle" it is pretty safe to assume that the three in the "clip" are some sort of love triangle but what is the clips origins ? Have they grabbed a piece out of a movie or is it something they did themselves ?

I sure would sleep a lot better at night if this riddle was solved . The likes of shinboner and the legend are probably sitting there going "DERRRRRRRRRR" at the minute but you will have to excuse my ignorance

I just thought it was the band simply taking the p*ss.

Especially Blue Monday, although you can't beat the original, i think i have lost count on how many different mixes i have laying around somewhere.

Okay, here's something that bugs me about Blue Monday. I was at a club and they played a version where Bernard starts to sing repeatedly, "When you need a friend, I won't be there" over and over again. I've never come across it - was it a special edition DJ only mix or did the DJ mix it in himself? Has anybody else heard this version?

Love Will Tear Us Apart gives me chills everytime I hear it.

On the subject of Joy Division, there's a few bands inspired by their sound -Billy Corgan is a huge fan .

I know of two bands who have a slant on the Joy Division sound.

Interpol-Turn On The Bright Lights was a fantastic release-haven't heard much of Antics yet -guitar mate has it on vinyl and loves em.

Another band which are very good from New York too (Pitchfork website)are a band called The Prosaics-they have a much more punk like sound but the Joy Division influence is definately there.

Aghast Agape is the name of The Prosaics EP-awesome stuff.

I would be pretty sure the DJ mixed it himself as i haven`t heard it but i can`t think of where he would have pulled the lyrics from ...... some more homework

Also, someone posted earlier in this thread saying that New Order were going to release some new stuff this year.

Here are some articals re: the new album.....
www.neworderonline.com/

The godfathers of everything return

New Order returns with their eighth studio album in the spring, and join the class of 2005 by taking their inspiration from... classic New Order.

Recorded over the past year, "Waiting For The Sirens Call" is divided between guitar tracks in the vein of previous album "Get Ready" and the synth-based tracks that are their trademark. NME can confirm it's their best album since "Technique". A single, likely to be "Jetstream", will be released in advance and, as normal, sleeve art will be designed by Peter Saville.

Bernard Sumner told NME: "The last album was guitar-heavy simply because we felt that we'd left that instrument alone for a long time and we thought that was what the general trend was and what people wanted to hear. But when we started doing live gigs, we found that people got off on the more dance-oriented and synth stuff just as much. This album really splits into two halves. It's a mixture of two, because that's what New Order fans like."

Album of the year contender + tour info soon.
According to page 351 of Channel 4 Teletext, Waiting For The Sirens Call is an album of the year contender with 9 out of 11 potential singles.

It's dancier than "Get Ready" with unusually sweet vocals by Bernard Sumner, notably on Waiting For The Sirens Call and post-club comedown tale Morning Night And Day.

It also mentions Jetstream (with Scissor Sisters Ana matronic on vocals), saying it has a nursery rhyme chorus while the final track Working Overtime sees New Order go glam rock to astonishing effect.

It also mentioned that the second single (the title track) will be released to co-incide with summer festival appearances and an April tour will soon be revealed.

3 singles planned for Waiting For The Sirens Call
New Order unveiled their new album to the UK music industry at a series of playbacks in London on Monday afternoon.

The album, their eighth, and the first since 2001's Get Ready, is called Waiting For The Sirens Call.

It had been rumoured to be a pure dance album, along the lines of 1989's Technique, but in fact mixes dance tracks with rockier songs.

Written in Manchester and recorded in Manchester, Liverpool and London, the record was produced by Stephen Street.

The playback was introduced by Warners MD Korda Marshall, who said the band plan to release three singles from the album: Krafty - one of the more electronic numbers, the title track and the poppy Jetstream Lover, which features Scissor Sisters' Ana Matronic.

Several tracks press all the right classic New Order buttons ie, great bassline, wistful vocals, endearingly appalling lyrics, and the final track of the record sounded like the Stooges.

'CALL' FOR NEW ORDER
NEW ORDER have unveiled further details of their forthcoming studio album.

The LP, ‘Waiting For The Sirens Call’, is set to be released on March 28 via Warner Music and will be preceded by a new single 'Krafty' two weeks before.

Other song titles slated to feature on the album, which signals a return to the band’s dance period in the late 1980s, include ‘Jetstream’ and ‘Sugarcane’.

The LP, which was recorded in Bath, has been co-produced by veterans Stephen Street and John Leckie.

Guitarist Phil Cunningham has also replaced keyboardist Gillian Gilbert as a full time member of the Manchester band.

Cunningham, who previously performed with New Order singer Bernard Sumner in Electronic, filled in for Gilbert during the group’s last tour in 2001/2002.

At the time the former keyboardist was forced to pull out so that she could care for her ill daughter.

There was a promo white label mix released in 2002 featuring the Rob Searle Remix (Extremely rare!), not sure if thats the one or not.

And for a bit of useless info, track 3 on cd2 of New Order's Substance "Mesh" is actualy the track "Cries & Whispers", apparently it was printed wrong on the original 12" of Everythings Gone Green as well.

Yeah, I read that. No wonder I always got confused with Mesh/Cries and Whispers.

Another useless bit of New Order info. That coloured circle on the back of Power, Corruption, and Lies is a code breaker. Each coloured segment represents the letters in the alphabet and numbers (all in order). If you match up the coloured segments to how they appear on other parts of the album cover art and on the original Blue Monday 12" cover, you get the titles, Factory code etc.

1. If Ian Curtis was still alive today would Joy Division be:

Here is some information on an upcoming Movie on Joy Division.

Joy Division story to become film
Jan 08, 2005 - 4:59:59 PM

The life of late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis is to be made into a film, it has been announced.
The Manchester-based production is called Touching From A Distance, after a book by Curtis's widow Deborah which forms the basis for the film.

Music mogul Tony Wilson, who headed the record company Joy Division were signed to, will be co-executive producer.

The musician committed suicide in 1980 aged 23, shortly before the band were due to go on tour in the US.

Mr Wilson, who has remained friends with Curtis's widow and daughter Natalie, who he says asked for his involvement to make the film "official".

"People have different ideas as to why Ian committed suicide, so maybe the film will reflect those different views," he told the BBC News website.

Plans for a separate Joy Division film had been announced at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, but the project did not get off the ground as it failed to get the backing of Curtis's family.

Mr Wilson, who was also involved with Joy Division's sucessor band New Order, as well as the Happy Mondays, said he would "rather not" appear in the film.

He made a cameo appearance in 24 Hour Party People, in which his leading role was played by Steve Coogan.

"I'm not an actor and I did a lousy job playing my part in 24 Hour Party People," said the Factory Records founder, who has been associated with the Manchester music scene since the 1970s.

"Film people have a tendency to mess up when they touch music, but I hope this one works.

Biopic plans

"This is much more than the music - they want to do the real story of Ian," he said.

The film is to be directed by Dutch-born Anton Corbijn, who has made music movies for Depeche Mode and U2.

It will be produced by a US production company, while the widow of Ian Curtis will also be an executive producer.

Love will tear us apart is their best song. I saw a filmclip of theirs on rage once, it had Ian Curtis on a beach with a flag or something, not a bad song but forget what it was called. They took the name 'joy division' from Nazi concentration camp brothels during World War II.

I`m pretty sure that was the "Atmosphere" video

1. If Ian Curtis was still alive today would Joy Division be:
a/ Better than New Order?
b/ pretty much the same?
c/ not as good?

I'll go with B.

2. Name your top 5 Joy Division tracks.
Transmission
Decades
Disorder
Interzone
Atmosphere

3. What is your favourite New Order Remix?
Hmmm...possibly one of the mixes from the original Confusion 12.

4. How many Joy Division cd's & records do you own?
Let's see. The 3 albums from their time period. 3 12's, LWTUA 7 and Komakino flexi-disk (I keep it stashed away with TISM's first single).

5. What was your first Joy Division & New Order purchase and where did you buy them?
Joy Division, Unknown Pleasures (purchased from Brash's at Northland (1981-anybody in this thread born then?)
New Order, Everything's gone Green 7. Leedin Records (a little shop that was around in the '80's, located in Smith St, Coll'wood).

6. How many New Order 12" records & CD Singles do you have in your collection?
No CD singles...all vinyl, and I've got them all leading up to the Technique period. never made any other purchases after that.

7. Have you seen either Joy Division or New Order live?
I've seen New Order on a few occassions. At the palais Theatre in '82 (nobody knew what to expect). At the Powerhouse in Albert Park (Lowlife tour-still the most amazing gig I've witnessed), Finally, I saw them at The Venue (classic St. Kilda pub), then the following night at Festival Hole.

8. What is your favourite New Order album?
One of PCL or Lowlife-I'll never decide.

I only ever wanted to see them perform a JD song, which I saw them do at the Powerhouse gig. I'm one satisfied Banana.

12. What is your rarest New Order CD or Vinyl?
Possibly the Ceremony or Temptation 7's. Had to really hunt around for both of these. Prior to Blue Monday, New order were considered, in this country, to be VERY underground. No Amazon.com or E-bay back in the '80's folks. Had to do actual leg work if you were REALLY keen on a release ('specially the OS releases).

13. What is your rarest Joy Division CD or Vinyl?
Komakino flexi. I keep it in a cold, dark place. Played it twice. Once to enjoy the listening experience, twice to record it. I came by it at a record swap meet in Carlton too many years ago.

14. What is your favourite Joy Division & New Order video clips?
Atmosphere. I never had a particular favourite video clip from New Order, however, my copy of "Pumped full of Drugs" (live show video) no longer works in any VCR.

15. What is your worst New Order Track?
Maybe Shellshock. Yep Shellshock.

16. Rate Barney's voice out of 10?
2-even after he had all those lessons leading up to Lowlife.

Apologies for the following as I'm in a bit of an anoraky mood.

Speaking of Ceremony, is the version you have the first recording (as a trio) or the second recording (after Gillian joined the band)?
