I think Juice has tremendous potential, and I think a number of you are simply too hard on him.

Sure, he is prone to stupidity, disgusting goal kicking and appalling illustrations of apathy, but the talent he possesses is undeniable.

I think if he was to work harder, he could become an extremely good player for this club. What was pleasing about his progress last year was the consistency he demonstrated whilst playing for Casey. Not only was he playing well for the most part, but his head didn't seem to drop even though he was kicking four each week and not getting selected for the senior side, so there were at least a few encouraging signs from him.

He has the tools required to make it as a full forward, he just needs to be given some time to make that spot his own at AFL level. I don't necessarily see him as an out-and-out gun, but he is someone who could definitely play a role up forward and kick a solid 40-50 per year if he can get his act together.

This is my perception of the matter anyway.

Been saying this all damn year and now there is finally someone else that agrees with me.

IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!!!!!

2008: He was branded as lazy and rightfully so, didn't chase, no 2nd and 3rd efforts and didn't run hard at all unless the ball was in his vicinity.

2009: His chasing, tackling and 2nd and 3rd efforts have improved out of sight. While his kicking is wayward at times, it can be brilliant at other times. I remember the goal he drilled from 50 on the boundary at Casey earlier in the year. However wayward kicking is something that can be addressed and fix, you can't teach a bloke to chase and make these 2nd and 3rd efforts they have to do it on their own.

To me it looks like Juice has woken up and realised that he needs to work extremely hard if he wants to get anywhere and the improvements in his off the ball work this season show that he could be extremely valuable for our forward line in the future if he continues to work hard.

This is the kind of response I was expecting, as a lot of you seem to have totally written him off.
His not good enough cannons. He's been in the system long enough now to make some impact. Just isn't hard enough at the ball and his disposal is very poor. Also with players like Watts, jurrah, wona, Bate and possibily Butcher, he'd be struggling to find a position. And i strongly believe robbo was moved on because we will take Butcher with pick 2 and next year will be the start of a new forward line moving forward. IMO.

He's been around for a while, drafted at pick 43 in 2004!

He has been around for a while but being drafted in the Neale Daniher days and with Neitz and Robertson still around he was never really going to get a shot unless injuries forced Danihers hand.

Ignore him, after all he wants to trade for Justin Westoff.
You are a ****ing moron Dez! Westoff is a good footballer and would fit in well with our young team. 50 games 76 goals. 198cm tall. Have you not seen him run around dez, you stupid ****!!

Cult Hero - but if we want to go forward, we need to cut players of his ilk.

In other words, if we were Geelong, he'd be 2 years delisted.

I think the common perception about Juice is wrong.

When he hit the scene, we thought he had all the talent in the world, but lacked the application and hard-work to make a career out of it.

What he has shown this year, if anything, is that he is in fact a very hard worker, but lacks the polish to his game to be a worthwhile KPP. His kicking for goal is just not up to it, and he doesn't have another string to his bow (Miller has the mobility to work up the wings at least).

He's not a long-term prospect. He'll get another year to prove himself, thanks to a generous deal last year when he had hardly earnt one, but my hopes aren't up.

"He's been in the system long enough now to make some impact."

He has only played 21 games. Be it form (early portion), injuries (fair portion), or the Neitz/Robbo factor (another fair portion).

He needs to hit the gym this PS. If he does that (well), given his commitment to the contest this season, Juice could well have his breakout year 2010. If he doesn't bulk up I fear he won't get many opportunities in the seniors.

He's got one more year to prove himself and he could become a half-decent KPF, maybe even better.

I remember talking to a senior Melbourne player during the preseason and asked who had the most natural talent in the club. Without hesitation he said Newton and the whole club was really excited about what would happen if he somehow got it right.

We've seen glimpses, and I think we have to commend him for his increased second efforts, tackling and intensity, but as a KPF you are marked on marks and goals, and Juice isn't really cutting it yet.

But I am happy to see how he goes next year, especially with a much improved midfield.

Just a question, how many players from Juice's draft are still around and have played less games?

I'm guessing probably not many.

Pick #13 Matthew Bate
Pick #15 Lynden Dunn
Pick #43 Michael Newton

Traded Pick #29 to the Eagles for Paul Johnson
Traded Pick #12 to the Tigers for Brent Moloney
Traded Darren Jolly to the Swans for Pick #15
Traded Pick #45 and Peter Walsh to the Power for Pick #43

Pick #29 was Matt Rosa
Pick #12 was Danny Meyer
Pick #45 was Justin Sherman

Wow we were active in trade week that year.

I am prepared to write him off. Can't see him becoming a good consistent player at AFL level. Happy for him to prove me wrong, but I don't think he has much of a future.

Hit the nail right on the melon Doc.

If Newton improves in front of goal, he'll probably be worth hanging onto, but he's been around for a while now and he hasn't achieved this yet....

One thing about Juice is he always provides a contest, either with his marking (and high flying), or when it goes to ground. He always takes a defender. If he could bulk up say 5-6 kg and improve his kicking he would be worth while.

However, if the right trade came along i suspect he would be gone.

Yes, this would be why Cheney is on enforced 'holiday' now I think...

Casey... enough said the guy is a joke.

A couple of things I noticed about Newton is he can ran, he can jump & he can tackle. But he's let down big time by his set-shot.
