The only situation where numbers should be retired, in my view, is in a situation like Darren Millane's.

I'm also no fan of high numbers, and "other sports do it" is neither here nor there for me. We don't have to be like other sports; nothing wrong with being unique.

Personally, since we'll have 45 on the list next year I'd like the spaces 1-45 filled only.

to state the obvious on high numbers, a number represents a locker, and to have lockers up into the 80s or some shit like that with only a handful being filled after 50 odd would be absolutely ridiculous.

It's a big reason why you give rookies who establish themselves number upgrades, so they're not languishing in the middle of nowhere at locker number 46 for example when the rest of the core senior players are way down the other end (or in another room as it used to be at windy hill with lockers 1-30 being in one room and the rest in another)

So that explains why Fletch stayed in 31...to be king of the kids in the other room. Such an old grandad. ;)

Retiring numbers is absolute rubbish. Eventually you would have no numbers under 50.
Resting numbers for a year is ok for club champions if no-one is ready for it, like Fletcher for example.
High numbers is also dumb. Jumper numbers are a tradition and is exciting when they are passed on to new players, and that includes having upgrades.
Players like it too, when they come to a club and they are given a jumper number rich in tradition from those who came before them. It is such an honour and privelege.
Agree with this! Hate retiring numbers. Resting is okay for tragedies. I would like to see numbers go up to 50s on the rare occasion, that's it. In most cases should be 1-40.

Yeah, some number traditions creeping back in.

Was never comfortable with Z Merrett is #27 for some reason.
I would have loved for him to be the next player in the succession to play 100 games in #27 and win a flag

So Long does his apprenticeship in 34 before being handed 13 when Cooney retires yeah?
Right when Watson finishes his apprentiship and slips into 32

34 is a transition number. Stanton, Hille and Neagle all went on to bigger and better things when they moved on. Slatts and Magin on the other hand...

Dammit, I wanna see a Long in #13 streaming down the wing on Grand Final day again!

So? My time started around 98 and I still know that Madden wore 44
Only for two and a half seasons, then he wore 44 at the scum...

What's wrong with 37?
