JUNE Pointer, the youngest of the Pointer Sisters, whose hits such as I'm So Excited and Fire topped the charts in the 1980s, died of cancer at 52, her family said.
Pointer died of cancer at UCLA Medical Centre in Santa Monica "in the arms of her sisters, Ruth and Anita and her brothers, Aaron and Fritz, by her side," a spokesman for the family said in a statement.
A third sister, Bonnie, was unable to be present, but "was with her in spirit," said the group's agent, ******** Guttman.
No details of June Pointer's illness were released.
The Pointer Sisters, who began their career in jazz, be-bop and gospel, released their first album in 1973. Their 1975 country music song, Fairytale, led to an invitation to perform at the legendary Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, a first for black female artists.
The group - originally the four sisters Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June - learned to sing in the choir of a San Francisco church where their father was pastor. In 1977 Bonnie Pointer left the group to pursue a solo career.
The singing trio produced several top 10 hits in the 1980s, including I'm So Excited, Fire and Slow Hand, in a songbook ranging from disco to 1940s-style scat singing.
Though their popularity declined in the late 1980s, the Pointer Sisters continued to perform live concerts.
June Poiter left the group in 2004 and was replaced by a daughter of Ruth, Issa.
