does anyone think we could string a run together to make the finals ?

If we win all 5 games, we get 12 wins - usually this makes the finals - we play all other games in Melb too.

After Freo...

St Kilda - should win
Essendon - no reason why we can't
Port Adel - a chance in Melb
Hawthorn - winnable game


These games are all winnable if we play with confidence....

Richo on the wing was a good idea - he is a nightmare matchup for the opposition. Ottens/Staff rotate the ruck, Holland can play forward or back...

Am probably getting carried away, but this team has enough talent to win these remaining games.

Nice thought, but doubtful - still have to rely on those in the 8 losing a few as well.

And would it be a false hope - and be a set back to achieve early draft picks Hard one. I want to play finals and cannot sit back and watch them and hope they lose just to get draft picks.

It was a great win tonight - but to make the 8 at this stage would be clutching at straws - have to win the lot IMHO and that's a big ask.

Still, collingwood made a grand final last year - anything can happen i guess.

If by some minor miracle we got in we wouldn't deserve to be there, you can't lose 8 in a row and expect to play finals come season end.

Those two terrible losses against Carlton and Geelong destroyed any realistic hope of finals action ... it's well past that now, whatever the mathematics might suggest.

If we can win three of the last five games, that would give us a 10-12 record which would be a fair result given our diabolical run of injuries this year.

(And would also ensure us a Top Ten draft pick!)

Funnily enough, I was thinking about Richmond's chances of making the finals after tonight's win, and if Richmond somehow did the most remarkable turnaround in modern AFL history and won their final 6 games, I'm sure that mathmatically speaking they would make the finals.

Why? Because, bar North, they play all the teams they need to overtake to get into the Final 8 (Hawks, Ess, Freo) so in a way, their destiny is in their own hands.

Also, the four sides that we can mathematcially overtake - Freo, Roos, Dons, Hawks - play each other over the remaining five rounds which means at least one side will lose and it will be easier for Richmond to catch up.

It would seem impossible for Richmond to overtake Freo, considering they are 12 points ahead of us with a game in hand and only 5 rounds to go. But their draw is very tough and the Richmond game is one of the few games they're expected to win.

Of course, having said that, I just don't think it's possible for Richmond to win their remaining 5 games - they won't be meeting as loose and indirect a side as the Bulldogs in the final 5 rounds.

Let's not forget that Hawthorn had a similar 2001 where they got off to a flyer, lost about 8 in a row and then recovered to almost pinch a spot in the Grand Final.

We wont beat Port

If it were to miraculaously happen, it would mean we would have to be in pretty fgood form, winning six in a row. Takes me back to when Geisch was interim coach and we won 4 of our last five matches, and just missed a finals birth. Brereton stated that we would have made waves in that finals series as we were as hot as any team at that point.

SPeaking of that period, did anyone hear the channel 10 commentary last night? Robert Walls said something about it being the first ten-goal Richmond final quarter since 1997....the week AFTER he was sacked .

I am probably just getting too excited, this being the first win the Tiges have had since I joined BigFooty.

Obviously the Freo game is the toughtest task - but we will head in as underdogs and in a confident mood. Didn't realise that the draw helps us in that our rivals all paly each other.

We are certainly due for a change in fortune.....

We need to go there switched on from the outset - a strong start and a few goal lead in the first quarter will shake Freo and playing hard, aggressive, direct footy is the only way we will win - am glad Danny let the shackles off last night (helped it was a team as unaccountale as the Dogs).

Hopefully our WA boys will be fired up for a good home town performance - Krak, Marty and Cogs.

The side we beat were a joke. Uncommitted and disinterseted. Its amazing how those dud footballs, Richo in particular, fool the ferals year in, year out, with amazing performances in games that just dont matter.
I for one hope Richo and Holland have a few more good fraudalant games. It should lift their profile at trade time!

Even more reason to get excited by the win. If they play more good games - i.e. Bowden, Richo, Tivva - basically only players that are tradeable - more reason to celebrate IMHO. A week ago they were untradeable basically.

I checked that and he was incorrect. It was last achieved in Round 15, 1997 against Hawthorn, a few weeks BEFORE Walls was sacked. It was the last win Richmond had while he was coach.

He should give himself a little more credit!

Hawthorn actually won their first 8 in a row in 2001, then they only won 5 out of the remaining 13 matches for the H & A season.

A nice little addendum to that was a few minutes after that comment when the stat that the last time Richmond kicked 18 goals in a half was when the Tigers played Fitzroy in 1996. To which Walls replied that was he was coaching in that game, or words to that effect.

Without drawing breath, Tim Lane quipped "Richmond or Fitzroy?"
