So what do we think? What's the pass mark for Longmuir this season?
Improvement which will take us to finals.

When you dig beneath vic media reporting you see 10 wins in 2023
A 3 point loss to the lions and the north game which was stolen by the umps and the non deliberate call.

We had improvement from young serong Jackson amiss

we had huge improvement in scoring
three consecutive 100pt games for the first time in 10 years
5 players with 22 goals + which won our goalkicking in 2018.

One thing JL can’t be questioned on is his player development.
Every bnf winner in JL tenure has been drafted this rebuild.
His got high draft picks firing AB Sebba Amiss Young.
He’s got late picks playing elite football Freddy Ryan Schultz
And got the best out of ring in journeymen lobb acres Aish.

We need to fight back against the dirt sheets and be positive.
There was so much to like in 2023
We have so much to look forward to.
If a big vic team or growth area had a team with 2 rising star winners and 8 other rising star noms in positions all over the ground the last 3 years they would be championing a dynasty in the future.
Yet we are portrayed as a team with no direction and limited hope.

We have an amazing coaching group
We will succeed we will win a our first flag before the decade is over.

We have to be the Best, exactly what WC did to the Cats in 92.
Ensuring it isn’t a very close game that will be influenced by the umps if
it’s against a Vic team.
That first Crows flag, they came from 12th in 96, then 4th in 97.
They also lost their best mid and forward yet Blight moved Mcleod to mid
and Jarman forward.
We have yet to see JLo orchestrate numerous against the odd wins, and that North game or games is inevitable every year.
Lions against the Bombers, the blueprint is there, five years is enough to judge
coaches, it’s a rapid rise and a flag or it’s not happening.

Your talking about the 90s
I want to give jl next year if his tactics fail him we bring in a tactical coach because our development will be complete.

Lions and Port too. If anything it’s become even harder since we made a GF.
One Interstate win in a decade.
We lost Mundy, Acres, and couldn’t stop the bleeding. Shultz, Henry, and thats
not including a key player injured.
The best coaches find a way, I personally think JLo has this year to prove himself.
The reality is that rapid rise will come from astute replacements.
I’d like him to succeed but it’s against the odds.

Pretty sure there has been numerous against the odds wins for example: W's against Geelong in Geelong, Melbourne when they were 10/0, elimination final v Bulldogs. Those are 3 off the top of my head.

I’m optimistic and believe we have a Richmond build going.
2006-09 they drafted their key talent and had a mongrel defensive coach in Terry Wallace.
Hardwick took over in 2010 and grew with the group.
No finals wins in first 7 years

2016-19 freo drafted well and RTB was a defensive mongrel coach.
JL started when covid started in 2020 for two years training and preparation was hampered.
He won a final in his fourth year and last year was the step back to go two forward working on our fwd structure which had great results but inconsistent
This year we will be back to the top 6
Next year we win the flag!

There were rumours that Bell wanted Connelly gone, but that 9 game winning streak in 06 saved his job.
Pavlich in 2011. But I think JLo is well liked by the playing group.
Sure if the club surrounded him with a great off field team like Hardwick👍
But we are talking about Freo, and we have been waiting forever to see
the club go all in.
The Ross Lyon era started well, then the organisation again slowly lost its way.
This other side of the coin is Hinkley, but at least they have a flag to watch the
replay.

Longmuir is a defensive coach. Most are. His problem is he has shown little else. That's the challenge.

The midfield with Young and Jackson has had a major revamp, plus the impact Johnson and Erasmus might bring is exciting. That midfield needs to win games for us.
Sharp is another that potentially could be a star.
Kicks goals, but the revamp of Young and Jackson could lead us to drink😜

I just struggle to include Sharp until he shows he is best 22. For now I am thinking our wings come from:
Aish, Johnson, NOD, Chapman and some others doing fill in time there.

But a tall, clean, fast, fit, long kicking winger is ticking a lot of boxes.

I’d say Clark is the perfect example for Sharp.

Look at our coaching group compared to others besides a couple big vic clubs.
Would take ours all day long.
Freo is a different beast now 2020 was the beginning of a new era.
We are not littered with bad trades bad draft picks bad injury management bad eggs and we are not putting our hopes on one or two superstars to get us there.
Fans need to recalibrate their mentalities.
We are not the joke club of the 90s the club to pity of the 2000s.
We are top 4 for game day support btm 6 for AFL handouts and have built the best group of young talent in the league.

agreed, because we probably over achieved in 2022, were now seen as on the decline for some reason and have no improvement to come. seems weird to me the narrative in the media bc when you look at the demographics were primed for success in the next few years

Not difficult to see the reasons:
  • we fell well short of public/mediaexpectations this year
  • we fell well short of the clubs advertised expectations
  • we failed to produce a consistent, defined or successful game plan
  • we have consistently lost best 22 players, including an area we lack any established depth in (worth reminding that Hughes was the preferred solution on the wing)
  • some of the clubs on field strategies have quickly fallen apart. Fyfe as a forward the most obvious, but there are others

and yet theres hardly any honest re-assessment of where the club is at in the media. its just 'well they made finals a couple years ago and havent this year so now theyre on a downward spiral'. im not saying we dont deserve any criticism and its all rosy, i just think the coverage of the club has been so lazy and shallow

if we hadnt have made finals that year, and instead had a smaller improvement and followed it up with the same year, would the club be viewed in the same light? theres more optimism around clubs whove done worse than us consistently year on year

Longmuir has to fix our record at Optus we should have been top 4/6 in past 2 years.

Like our away form has been decent and sort have been wasted.

We should be winning 10 games at Home every year. Slip up here and there but not going at 50% at home is embarrassing something JL needs to fix up.

That's some mainline copium straight into the veins.

Fans need to adjust their expectations? Are you for real? In the last 8 years, this club has made finals once. Everyone wants to find a boogeyman like Ross Lyon but we've seen getting rid of him didn't catapult us into finals and he's coached a different team for the first time ever and they made finals. So it's obvious to anyone with half a brain the common factor is the club.

The Dockers are a big-money club in a football state. The fans should reasonably be expecting a break even for crying out loud. finals at least every other year.

My expectation as a fan is that every single year when the season starts your club is doing everything within its power to win a flag and that means winning as many games of football as possible. This whole club has a perennial mentality that next year is the year for a flag.

I think the only thing this club is best in the league at is possibly propaganda and social media bullshit.

The last 8 years Ross has coached 4 of those and those seasons were putrid. Freo catapulted into finals in 2022 so factually you are wrong on both accounts.

Finals at least every second year!? It doesn't just happen. You have to set the foundations for continual success. Freo have the list for finals so the expectations are there but the list age and development last year wasn't in the window. Brayshaw and Serong have been guns. They are young and have Young Johnson and occasionally Jackson or Erasmus as support. Look.at the age and positive development from them. Then look at Collingwood and Brisbane's midfield age of players and how dominant they are. It will come but not as 19 to 23 year olds.

Ross is not the saviour you make him out to be. The Saints started strong and slowly fell down the ladder. I doubt anyone is overly concerned about playing them this coming season.

You need to put things into perspective instead of shouting at the clouds.

I agree with all this plus the element of 'same old Freo'. We have a long way to go to legit shake that tag.

Haven’t we turned over all coaching staff and a fair whack of senior management in the last 5 years?
