24. Kane Lucas

Live chat with Kevin Sheehan

Do you think Kane Lucas will play this year?

I'm certain he will. He's had the benefit of senior footy in the WAFL. Athletically he's in a rare category with his speed, agility, endurance. He's an All Australian from 2009. I think he's ready to play as a medium mid, medium forward.

That's why Shifter earns the big bucks.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

How many games should we expect from Lucas?

With his combination of speed, endurance, agility and top age status, Lucas could surprise.

Doesn't have as much as talent and upside as Gibbs, but he looks fitter and more match ready than Bryce.

As my buddy this year I intend to get along to a few sessions and give some insights into Lucas and how he is travelling.

From what I've seen and read of him TG It certainly wouldn't be a surprise at all to see Kane feature in many AFL games this year. IMO he is a certainty to feature in the NAB cup/challenge.

I'm going to predict a minimum of 10-12 games for Lucas but could easily see him playing more injury permitting.

Not sure about your Gibbs comment/comparison, do you think BG is lacking a bit in conditioning or...??

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

I was referring to Gibbs' first season as a skinny bottom age draftee, but I must have had a brain fart and left off that part. :o ;)

Lucas looks fitter than Grigg.

Like Casboult, Lucas appears to be a tad fitter and more toned than when he arrived at the club.

Good work by Cordy.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

No doubt he is in better shape then first year Gibbs, but BG was a bottom ager and as your pointed our before Lucas is a top ager.

Edurance, Fitness and Athleticism have been the continuous reported traits of Lucas for the past few years when one looks back at reports on him so it comes as no real shock that he is in good shape.

However I have to agree, Cordy's work is impeccable and can never be underestimated IMO.

The nick he is in currently can only add weight to claims of him playing senior footy this year, it gives him a pretty handy start.

Certainly was in his first two years. Hard running wasn't one of his strong points, but it is improving greatly.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

Just thought I'd make a compilation of comments by a few random posters who obviously attended the recent praccy match and what they thought of Lucas, followed by a piece from an article and some photo's of him in action :thumbsu:

Lucas looks like he is ready to roll straight into game 1 and play a massive part...

* Lucas - very good and will play most of the year if this hitout anything to go by. Reads play very well and suprisingly strong.

I thought Lucas looked extremely poised and confident. If he can keep that up through the NAB cup, you'd expect him to get a seniors call up not too far into the season.

Lucas - impressed me, looked the best of the new faces.

I thuought Lucas went pretty well atleast 10-15 touches got alot of touches out on the wing that i was sitting on so i got to see afair bit of him, his left foot is amazing...

...

Carlton's latest first-round draft pick Kane Lucas showed glimpses of class playing off a wing with Riley delighted with the pre-season the youngster has been able to put in.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

Just watched a video of Wayne Hughes talking about the intra-club match and he said that Kane Lucas has been doing all of the drills with the elite midfielders. :thumbsu:

JOB KANE KEEP IT UP!!

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

Hughes should have admitted he made a mistake passing on another quality tall like Talia ;)

'Classy' Lucas set for Blue Debut

CARLTON youngster Kane Lucas is poised to make his AFL debut against Richmond on Thursday night.

The Blues most recent first-round draft pick has impressed since arriving at Visy Park and looks set to join mature age recruits Brock McLean, Lachie Henderson and Robbie Warnock in the navy blue for the first time.

Good news for Kane :thumbsu: and good luck to the kid if selected, Monty goes on to say that he's 'looked up to the class [of AFL]', which is no real surprise.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

From all reports Kane was extremely close to making his Navy Blue debut against the Tigers last Thursday night.

Apparently he was used down back on the weekend for the Bullants and looked a bit lost which is probably to be expected from somebody who isn't a natural defender.

If the reports of him playing down back are indeed correct, I'd be very surprised at that move. Fair enough if they want to teach him a defensive game but I'd be very wary of taking him too far away from his natural game, especially so early in his career.

Here's hoping he performs well in the reserves and forces his way into the senior team sooner rather than later - got a feeling he could be a very, very good footballer for the CFC for many a year.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

Perhaps they were trying him out as a defender to see if he would be a suitable replacement for Joey? (assuming he's not going to play this week..)

Lucas to make Debut

First round Draft selection Kane Lucas will make his AFL debut, replacing Joe Anderson in the team. Anderson has been omitted.

Lucas was recruited to Carlton from East Fremantle in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft. He was Carlton’s first pick, number 12 overall.

Named on the interchange.

Well done Kane, and what a game to make your debut.

Now we get to see what the kid can do in the real thing :thumbsu:

Lucas proves able
Living with the family of Port Adelaide youngster Jackson Trengove it can be hard to escape footy, so he killed some time by watching the first quarter of the Power v Lions clash.

The nerves continued trough to his arrival on the MCG turf, but subsided as the match wore on.

“I’ve never played in front of a crowd that big, but once you get your surroundings you begin to really enjoy it,” he said.

“Obviously we didn’t come away with a win, but it was a good opportunity and hopefully I can build from here.

“I was a bit nervous with my first few touches, [they] were a bit shaky but I think I improved a little bit as the game went on.

“It’s just good to get the first one out of the way, so we’ll see what I can do for the rest of the season now.”

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

He did some good things but some terrible things also with his kicking. He will improve a lot although.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

Kane was clearly nervous early on and fumbled the ball early on but that is to be expected from a player making his debut in his first game in front of 70k supporters.

Got better as the game wore on and he became a bit more relaxed and confident in his ability. Didn't kick the ball much but found a fair bit of it and mainly used his hands to get his teammates involved.

I was very pleased with his tackling and pressure.

One of the only players that could hold his head up after Saturday night. Certainly didn't disgrace himself like a fair few of his teammates did.

A solid debut and certainly something he can build on. Should feature regularly in the senior team this season.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

I'm impressed with the boy, especially with his ability in close and tackling, pressure etc. For some reason I was under the impression, before actually seeing him play, that he was much more of an outside running player, but maybe I need to pay more attention to the drafts, because it seems like he could be just as good at both inside and out. A quite complete midfielder if you will.

Just really hope he gets a good run in the team for now regardless of what happens, I think he'll really blossom as he settles in.

Re: 24. Kane Lucas

Very impressive debut, felt so bad for him when he went to tackle Hille and near knocked himself out. He'll only get stronger though :thumbsu:
