Better than Pyke at the same stage. Pyke is now a genuine AFL standard ruckman, and is still improving. Hunt was more successful in his previous sport than Pyke.

So yeah, I wouldn't be too worried. I reckon he'll get there. Never be a champion, but he'll probably be a better-than-average player in about 3 years.

but Pyke has an athletic quality that is his tapwork that requires less football skill in general to succeed at the top level

If he was any other first year rookie defender you'd say he was doing ok.

He's still learning the game and he's ok defensively. When i've watched him he's also made reasonable decisions, such as when it's appropriate to leave his man to make a contest elsewhere.

Stuffs up now and then and gets caught in no mans land. Plenty to work on tho.

As a player is he worth his salary? Hard to argue he is, but we know why he was recruited and so far he's far from hopeless

The Gold Coast backline last Sunday
Jarrod Harbrow - 74 games
Seb Tabe - 4 games
Karmichael Hunt - 4 games
Josh Toy - 3 games
Jack Hutchins - 1 games
Steven May - 0 games

Anybody would struggle playing in that backline.

I get a bit irritated and saddened by all of the knockers. Hunt is having a crack. He is picking up the game pretty fast. Gold Coast need some strong bodies and guys who make a contest. Hunt's iffy skills and questionable decision-making is the least of their concerns.

I wish people would get over the fact he was an NRL star and is getting overpaid as an AFL player because of marketing reasons. None of this stuff really concerns you or I. Seriously, who gives a shit? I applaud him for giving it a go. It can't be easy. I enjoy watching him play. It creates extra interest in the game. A bit like watching the tailenders in cricket and hoping that one of them can make a half century.

There is only one Karmichael Hunt.... But there's a lot of K hunts in this world

Above average (I guess) but never a great player (IMO) in rugby league. Was a part of a Brisbane team that didnt miss the finals, including one premiership, and apart of the best Queensland team probably of all time, but especially in the Qld side he was hardly an integral part of their success.

Not sure if serious? You have just stated he won a premiership, was a part of the best Queensland team of all time, and add in the fact you left out that he was always picked in the Australian team, then follow it up by saying he was above average (you guess).

F#ck me! What would he have had to do to be a great player? Score 50 tries a game? The fact was he was consistently seen as one of the top 1 or 2 players in his position, and one of the top 13 players in the country (as seen by his ongoing selection for Australia).

I agree Chewy. I think a lot of people are taking pot shots at him because they think he's arrogant for switching codes and/or that he has a huge contract for someone of his footy ability. Its an easy cheap shot if you ask me and the focus should be on his performance and the Suns as a whole.

If you take away the code switch and money side of things and focus on his performances and those of his team then he's not that bad. Everyone in that defence is getting goals kicked on them and they're all making errors yet Hunt is the one that gets singled out constantly. Did pretty good on Jarrad Grant in one sided demolition of the Suns.

He's definitely got the L-plates on, but I think he's progressing well considering his background, the position he's playing and the team he's in. Still gotta slim down a bit (definitely those mega thighs), but he's competing and I think next year with a full season under his belt and another preseason's conditioning we'll see a much better player.

He did alright against the Dons, considering how much ball was coming into the Gc's defensive 50. He won't ever be a star, but there's no reason he can't become another Merrett- a dour defender who can beat his opponent. He will be far better than Folau, because unlike Izzy, Hunt will do everything to make the transition a success.

I think that he is playing pretty well.

A lot of guys playing in the backline of a team getting severly spanked all around the ground would look a lot worse.

How long before he gets dumped?

I'm hesitant to criticise him, and recognise that switching sports was always gonna be difficult for him, but he is that useless right now that Gold Coast are effectively playing with 17 men. He will improve but how long can Gold Coast afford to wait?
There are marketing considerations, but how long can they afford to keep a bush-leaguer in their 22?
I suspect that the day he gets dropped will be the end of his football career.

He puts bums on seats - that's his primary job. He won't be dropped. It's like suggesting that we ban the club mascots from the ground, only worse.

really, his is the exact same position as the other kids playing up there, and working on the same time scales. do you expect matera, swallow, bennel and toy to be guns in their first year of football?

nope, he is and was always going to take a couple of years to learn the trade, and he will be coming into his best football when the rest of the kids up there do.

Wake up people, he's been shocking. If his name wasn't Karmichael Hunt and earning a squillion dollars, he'd be playing in the QFL. He'll never make a top level AFL player and therefore not earning the money he's being paid.

As for not being beaten one-on-one, he's a defender, when does he ever play one-on-one? He gets one kick a game and everyone thinks he's doing well

Have to agree. Yes he's having a go, yes he's trying hard, but you know what? Tough shit. If it was any other player on any other list, he'd be getting crucified for the blunders he's been making. Check out any team board and you'll find whipping boys left, right and centre.

I've got nothing against him personally, but I have contempt for the AFL and especially the commentators who spin the garbage about well he's doing. Wayne Carey was one of the very few who dared to say it - it's an insult to every other player on a list. Perhaps people will realise that Australian Rules Football is actually rather difficult to play at the elite level, and being a good athlete from another sport doesn't mean shit.

The only good thing is Folau is going to be even worse.

Long may he blunder, we need the comedy.

Is that you Robert Walls?? Or Tony Shaw?

Every single thread your on your having a go at Hunt. Dont you get sick of it?

He is doing an ok job in a team that is getting absolutely killed all over the ground... give the guy a break.

He's going better than Nathan Krakoeur and Nathan Ablett, and both of them have considerably more Aussie rules experience. What exactly is N Ablett's status with the Suns at the moment?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.

Hunt was regarded as elite from the age of about 17, as far as I know, and lived up to that as soon as he came into the senior Brisbane Broncos side. He's always been regarded as an outstanding player, which was why it was such a coup for the AFL to get him on board.

Official Captain's Chauffeur, I'm guessing.

Playing really well in the reserves right now. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get a shot in the next few weeks. Personally, would rather see him up forward ASAP. Another bigger body up there to give Dixon a hand.

Hunt is so shocking. It's a blight that such a terrible player could be getting played a million a year to be a terrible back pocket player that wouldn't get a game about 3 levels down from the AFL.
Shows that you can't teach monkeys how to play a complex game.

I think the Channel 9 executives said something similar about Eddy

I'm pretty sure a lot of Collingwood supporters held that opinion of young Toovey early in his career.
