Certainly does slow things down but never had any problems with the legs.........if anything kept the legs going all night just slowed the brain cells a little and rendered the effects of alcohol useless like certain other substances have the ability to do.

I tried in whilst on a cruise on the Fairstar a few years ago........

During our day in Vila we had hired a taxi for half a day to show us around a few places and we could tell the driver was certainly on it so 2 of us asked whether we could arrange to try some as he looked like he'd been on it all day. He dropped us off in town and said he'd be back in 30 minutes to pick us up after making arrangements.

We were getting a little worried when we headed a long way out of town and into the highlands before driving in to one of the community villages and then we were led into one of the bamboo huts where there were about 30 locals sitting around looking pretty stoned (very red eyes).

The driver then introduced us to a few of the tribe and then took us over to a table where they had the kava brewing - basically it is the root of a plant that is ground up and boiled in water like tea.

As we weren't sure how much to have we asked the driver who said he usually had 6 cups which kept him going for 24 hours so we thought we would try 3 cups each. They poured the brew into coconut cups and looking at it we thought what are we in for as it looked like Murray River Water.

Took a small sip at first to get the taste and was ready to spit it back out when the driver said to just skull it down. So took a quick breath and bang down it went quickly followed by 2 more and then a drink of fresh coconut straight after to kill off the taste.

Within minutes it was like a dentist needle had hit the mouth with the lips and tongue going slightly numb. We gave the villagers $5 as a thank you gesture and then got back in the taxi for the 30 min trip back to the boat in town.

Well by the time we got back to the boat the 2 of us were in hysterics like what occurs after a good smoke. We said our farewells to the driver who also gave us a bag of it for the rest of the cruise and then proceeded to walk through the markets that were set up on the port next to the boat.

Eventually getting back on the boat after buying a few souvenirs that we probably only bought due to our condition and met up with some mates at the bar who took one look at us and declared we were stoned. We then spent the whole night drinking and in hysterics whilst partying on til sun rise.

Basically I would compare it to being very stoned but at the same time not wanting or feeling like sleeping at all and the driver was pretty right about how long it lasts. We used the remainder a couple of nights later on in the cruise and everybody had a great night.

So Macca.......why do you ask.......:D

just wondering if anyone else has tried/likes it.

There is a place called The Kava Hut down Hindley St in town...which is legendary. Got me photo up on the wall :D

I agree its like your stoned but without the uncontrollable laughter. Very relaxing and very cheap too!!! $2 a shot...5 shots will do the trick...will get you hell relaxed for about3 hours or so.

Definatly recommend it!

I am so there on my next trip. :D

I tried it in figi whilst in the navy, as a whole heap of the guys did and quite a lot of the guys bought it back home.

From memory about 3 or 4 guys got so out of it they missed the ship when it left for vila as they were asleep on a beach somewhere.

Very naughty boys and they got in a lot of trouble.

Yeahh, tried it in when I was in Vanuatu last year. Taste like sh it (ie. like a muddy toxic water out of a coconut shell), but went back for more to see what the stuff could really do. Must say I was a little disappointed as it didn't really do much for me. I'll stick to other alcoholic beverages ... particularly my European beer tour staring in a couple of weeks. :D

How much you have and how watered down is the secret to the effect it has.

I'll bite.

What's your itinerary?

I've occasionally mulled over the idea of doing a Europe tour solely for the pursuit and consumption of beer. I figured it would start in Dublin, wander through England and into Belgium, possibly with a side trip up to Amsterdam for the Heineken Brewery Museum (the best value tourist attraction in Europe), then into Germany (particularly Bavaria) and finishing in the Czech Republic.

Do you have a plan or are you just going to "wing it"?
