Never said otherwise SD. Read again. Lynch gets a fair % of his marks out-bodying his opponent 1 on 1 in the goal-square. Brown gets a higher % of his marks on the lead or flying into a pack. ie. He is far more mobile than Lynch (as well as being a man mountain).

Yet you would be willing to trade one player that we can always count on for a risky draft pick.;)
c'mon, I thought we put this to bed:p

There are two tactics to beat Lynch, both require smart players to succeed. Neither player needs to be particularly strong.

First has already been mentioned here. That is to congest the F50 to stop Lynch leading up the guts. Make him go wide.
The extra defensive player needs to be smart because he needs to know when Lynch will be leading, and also watching Lynch to see where he will lead. Ability to read the play is critical. (Jason Cloke is often given this role). If at all possible he needs to get to the marking contest and be third man up.

Secondly, FB cannot play man on man under any circumstances. He needs to play two or three metres off Lynch and time his spoil to perfection. Smart in his heyday was excellent at this. Again the ability to read the play is critical.

Other teams do it and with some success.

Conversely, watch how Saint Kilda play Brisbane this week. They are one of the very few who could afford to go one on one with Lynch by playing Gehrig at FB.

I don't think the Saints need to take Gehrig out of the forward line to nullify Lynch. Penny will take him and Maguire will take Brown. Gee whiz, what I wouldn't give to have Maguire.

I was thinking today about how much we talk about our "talented youngsters", and how exciting is to to watch them develop and discuss their progress - imagine being a St. Kilda supporter at the moment!

Obviously I'm more than happy with our short history;)

naughty monkey you are 100% correct with the strategies to stop Lynch. Anyone who gets into one on one wrestling match with Lynch will get beaten.

However, I seriouly doubt that Saints will move Gherig from FF to FB to mind Lynch. They will have Penny take on Lynch and Maguire play on Brown and they will use one of the tactics you mentioned.

Anyone who decides to play Lynch one on one has got a death wish.

Maguire is a fantastic prospect. He was a dead set steal.

anyone watch Port Vs Doggies on sunday?????? How good was Harris on Tredrea?????? After Tredrea gave Grant a bath Harris was moved on Tredders and did a bloody good job.

What would I give for a FB like that. I don't care what it takes but I would be throwing everything, including the Footy Park at Doggies as long as they give us Harris. Mark my words in a couple of years he will be the best FB in the comp.

I still can't believe we didn't pick him up in the draft. he was pick 70 or something. another one that got away.:(

stiffy,
don't forget how hard it is to judge defenders in the draft, many high picks wasted as teams guess who might be good.

michael was rookie listed
kenny was pick a gazillion
hay about the same.

think brandon hill
chris lamb
leigh brown

all high picks none of them made the key defensive spot their own.
luke penny is another.

damned hard to know i'd say, perhaps a key defender is the hardest spot to judge.

I would say talls are generally harder to judge than smalls as they can take longer to develop (ie. ofter still growing / putting on weight).

Add to that the fact that they have usually had an unnatural advantage over the majority of their competition just because they were bigger for their age. And a fear as to whether they may not continue to grow.

That was the fear with Pavlich when he was overlooked by 16 sides as a rising 17 year old. Of course history shows that he realy went on, besides continuing to grow.

An example of the reverse side of the coin is Michael Handby. Didn't grow any bigger, didn't go on with it.

Guess which one we drafted!! :(
