The all time sporting adages suggests - if you score more points than the other team, you will win.

This came to the front last Thursday night against Collingwood - we had a massive 93 tackles. Normally, the crows average tackles per game we have accrued over the last 3 to 5 seasons was sitting anywhere between 59 and 63 per game.

However, winning becomes a much easier task if you are a very good football tram and follow your systems, structures and team rules. Therefore, what KPI's do you think we need to achieve each week to become a successful club and increase our chances of winning each week?

  • 25 tackles per quarters
  • Winning the contested possession

Well, I think tackles are simply a representation of pressure. You want to win AFL football games in this day and age, you'd better bring the pressure. You play pressure football, your tackle stats go up as a result.

All the other statistics are less important except if you are extremely off in one or more of other statistics it might be the difference between winning and losing.

So for me, the key stat is pressure, how you measure that is any ones guess.

Pressure acts are only 1 key area.

Hawthorn won the 2013 premiership but only ranked 8th in tackling.

I'm sure Alistair Clarkson demanded they meet different KPI's per game.

25 tackles per quarter? That seems excessive.

To me:
68-70 tackles per game - Would put us in elite category
Contested possessions and clearances - We have a dangerous midfield, winning contested ball and/or clearances is an obvious but important factor for us
Tackles inside 50 - Betts, CC, and Pods are all very good defensive players, putting pressure on rebounders will help us get repeat entries
Marks inside 50 - I think we've been struggling with this, hopefully Walker back will help with this
Is turnovers one? We've been shocking with them so far this year

When your kicking is as elite as Hawthorns, you can afford to be a little lower in tackling. There are times I watch the Hawks play and pin point pass after pass and think " why the **** can't we do that"

I guess that's why we have to be far more ruthless in other key areas.

Our kicking isn't as good but we should be able to measure other areas to over come that deficiency.

It's an interesting topic because I think the KPI's changes from year to year depending on the coach and game plan.

I was watching "Open Mike" with Jason Dunstal and they were talking about how Hawthorn won in 07 but missed the finals in 08. Dunstal was saying that Hawthorn were a top heavy uncontested possession winner in 07 which won them the GF, but in 08 teams had adjusted their game plans, zones and tactics to deal with Hawthorns ability to win the game through uncontested possession, so Hawthorn had to take a bunch of guys who didn't like the contested possession and turn them into contested possession ball winners, which a chunk of players didn't take an immediate liking to.

Everyone has their specialty ( granted kicking the ball well seems to be a decent one given the name of the game) and you have to play to those strengths. If ours is going to be pressure acts, then we have to play with that same intensity that we did on Thursday

True again

However, Jason could also be accused of not wanting to admit the team developed a hangover by becoming a lazy and complacent group of players.

im pretty sure if you average 25 tackles a quarter you'd set an AFL all time record for tackles?

Having a KPI that no one has ever achieved seems to not be a good KPI haha

edit: seems like its been done 30 or 40 times before but never by us

Darren Milburn saud in MMM this morning - they were on track to reach 113.

However, yes 25 (100 per game) does seem a bit unrealistic.

Maybe 20 a quarter would be more achievable.

I would think the more time in possestion you have the lower your tackle count will be, all other factors being even.

Stats without context is as useful as fantasy points being used to pick who to play. The Cornes brothers were good at ring a rosy stat and points padding while their team was losing games, the answer probably lies in a combination of GPS heat maps, stats and quaility of possestion.

Metres gained is one I quite like.

Holy trinity not bad. CP/Tackles/DE%. Beat the opposition in that on a weighted average basis and you shouldn't lose too many games.
I could probably do some testing on that.... but that involves work ;)

Our most tackles we have ever had in a game was 99 against the Bulldogs in rd 4, 2013.

I like his thinking. If we set ourselves ridiculously high KPI's - even if we come up just short we will still be the best team ever.

KPI's:

40 goals a game
100 tackles a game

You are a buffoon.

contested possessions.

For how I break that down go take a look at the draft game thread. Everyweek when Kate posts his stats I calculate the holy trinity for each team.

CP - contestested possessions - how often you win the footy - get ball
Tackles - how hard you work to get it back - get ball back
DE% - how well you used it so you don't turn it over - don't lose ball

C'mon man.... Its a saturday night, we had a great win on Thursday.

Don't get so snarky because your KPI was unachievable.

1) I've already acknowledged it as not totally achievable.
2) Darren Milburn said they were on track for 113 tackles (so it's not totally out if the question)
3) your just being silly.
