Kick-outs.

Hope you don't mind my putting my 2 bobs worth in.

Hawthorn this season has developed the approach of making the more offensive options from the kick-out more difficult to reach for the person bringing the footy back in. So, in order to beat the clock, the person kicking in goes for the easy option of going to the pocket. However, that simply plays in to Hawthorn's hands because we can then execute our defensive pattern to put pressure on the ball-carrier to force a turnover.

From memory, I'd say that Schulz's long bombs were an attempt, probably at your coach's instructions, to try to beat that plan by at least getting the footy to a contest where your midfielders could get the clearance.

From this year's AFL prospectus:
Richmond was able to move the ball into attacking 50 without creating a stoppage or allowing the opposition to gain possession with 46% of its kick-ins last season - Ranked 1 in the AFL"
"Joel Bowden and Chris Newman were responsible for 263 of Richmonds 308 behind kick-ins with 45% of those generating an inside 50."

Last night's kick-in efforts by McMahon can't help his campaign to be our designated kicker. Not sure why Newman wasn't used.
I thought Newman should have been given the job as well. I think they could have gone to him more in general play as well. Instead of trying to handball our way through the maze Hawthorn set up, it may have been better to go with a quick switch then kick long and wide to the wing. There were a few times we had someone loose out there but didn't use them. Unfortunately you can't when you have blokes like King in the backline that can't kick over 35 metres. King should be banned completely from kick-ins. Its bad enough when he has no idea what he is going to do with the ball in general play, but disastrous at kick-ins.

We may have lost the game, but we have bought to attention the game plan for the footy world to see. Whilst it was no real secret, it will be scrutinised like never before. The Hawks could come back to the pack a bit now thanks to Plough:thumbsu:

They have been doing it all year.

People have been talking about it for weeks. We are just all over it this week because we have just faced it.

Why do you think Clarkson has been so upset about his closed sessions being spied on all year?

Like i said, it hasnt been a secret at all. But as more start to analyse it, like they are doing now, the harder it will be for the Hawks to maintain its effectivness. Wallace is to my knowledge the first coach to come out and detail/praise it. Why?

No way known was it to be a pat on the back for great tactical planning. What was his motivation behind the praise? To sow the seed to have its effectiveness curtailed. Hope so;)
