Hi guys,

Just wanted some tips on kicking when running at top (or near top) speed.

I posess some decent acceleration off the mark, yet my kicking when running at top pace severely lets me down, usually coming out as floaters in the kick.

I'm a fairly good kick when I'm standing still/on the jog, but kicking at full pace troubles me.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

This bugged me for a while too.

The best thing I can say is just to go down to the park, do 20 metre sprints and at the end try hitting a target, its what we do at footy training and it does end up working quite a treat.

Are you looking to hit targets or having shots at goal? Because for me there's quite a difference. Im pretty good at spotting up targets, but lousy at goal kicking.

Hope that helps. :thumbsu:

It can be extrememly difficult. At training we're taught to steady ourselves for a couple of paces and then kick, making sure we're balanced and in complete control.

Thanks alot for that, you too Deenamite :thumbsu:

It probably is more for goalkicking, but in general play I struggle badly as well. Just can't get a nice drop punt to come out while running hard.

I think it might be my ball-drop, any help in that regard?

My general kicking improved alot when i started doing a proper follow through technique. So i recommend going to the park and trying to really spear kicks and see how your technique goes.

As for the ball drop, just try and guide it onto your foot more, and let go of the ball closer to your foot, rather than higher up.

Sorry that its not much help. :thumbsu:

Practise practise practise.

I think its best, that instead of disposing at top speed, you need to slow down a touch and steady yourself, then kick.

Use your pase to break away, then just take one or two steps to put the breaks on, then kick. Generally much more balanced, meaning much better disposal.

as much as it hurts to say, watch video's of ben cousins do this, he is the best in the business at kicking while running at top speed. notice how he lands on his kicking foot after the ball is kicked. this is what we as coaches have been taught over the last 18 months. it takes a lot of balance initially but is a very important component of getting good penetration and accuracy. practice this while jogging, landing on the same foot you kick with. guaranteed you'll stuff it up initially and feel uncomfortable but since i've taught my players how to do this they feel a lot more comfortable running with the ball and get caught a lot less.
give it a go

Listen to the ferris man. He is absolutely correct.

Wow, what a quick and outstanding amount of responses this thread has produced.

Like to thank everyone who posted, especially you Ferris, will get onto that immediately.

What a great idea for a board this turned out to be :):thumbsu:

Ferris if you have any tips you want to give to a small crumbing forward/part time midfielder, feel free to PM! :)

no problem, i'm off to the afl coaching conference next weekend at the mcg, runs for 3 days, not cheap at $320 but hopefully will pick up some more of the latest techniques.
i'll come back to this thread next week.

That would be brilliant Ferris, only thing is I feel incredibly guilty if you pay all that money and you give some of that information to me, so feel free to keep it to yourself and your players.

Cheers, D2T.
